A5 paper measures 148 × 210 millimetres (approximately 5.83 × 8.27 inches). It is an ISO 216 A-series size: in portrait orientation it is 148 mm wide and 210 mm high; in landscape orientation, those dimensions are reversed. A5 is half the area of A4, making it a practical format for small paintings, sketches, cards, booklets, forms, and everyday notes.

The A5 dimensions are listed for ISO 216 formats in IETF RFC 2911 (2000). The inch figures are rounded conversions, so a ruler or printer dialog may show slightly different decimal values.
Why A5 is half of A4
ISO A-series sheets are designed so that halving a sheet across its longer dimension keeps approximately the same width-to-height shape. Fold or cut an A4 sheet measuring 210 × 297 mm across its 297 mm side and each resulting sheet is A5, nominally 148 × 210 mm. The standard uses whole-millimetre dimensions, so the mathematical proportions are represented by rounded measurements.
A5 compared with US Letter
A5 and US Letter belong to different sizing systems. A5 is an ISO metric format, while North American Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches (215.9 × 279.4 mm), as listed in RFC 2911. Letter is substantially larger in area and cannot be treated as an A5 substitute. If a form, artwork template, or printer preset specifies A5, selecting Letter will change the scale and available margins.

What is A5 used for?
Painting and drawing
A5 gives artists a compact surface for studies, color tests, plein-air notes, thumbnails, and finished small works. Its proportions match the rest of the A series, so an A5 composition can be enlarged to A4 or reduced to A6 with relatively little cropping. Check the paper’s medium rating before painting: A5 describes the sheet’s dimensions, not its weight, texture, acidity, or suitability for watercolor, acrylic, ink, or oil media.

A5 notepads are a common practical use. The size is large enough for meeting notes or journal pages while remaining easy to carry. A5 is also used for some books and booklets; the exact finished size can vary when trimming, binding, or adding covers.
Letters, flyers, and forms
A5 works well for short documents, invitations, menus, instruction sheets, and small handouts. Leave room for printer margins and trimming rather than assuming the entire 148 × 210 mm area is printable.

A5 and envelopes
A C5 envelope is sized to hold an A4 sheet folded once to A5. The folded sheet is still A5, whereas the envelope is a separate C-series format with extra room for insertion. For a thicker painting, card stock, or booklet, allow additional clearance for the paper’s thickness and any binding.
Will A5 paper fit in a printer?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Printer support depends on the model, tray, paper path, driver, and sometimes duplex mechanism. For example, Lexmark’s T656 documentation lists A5 as 148 × 210 mm and identifies support in its documented tray and multipurpose-feeder configurations, including the listed duplex column. That evidence applies to the T656 documentation, not to every Lexmark printer or every brand.
- Find the exact printer model and open its manual or paper-size specification.
- Check whether A5 is supported in the tray or manual feed path you intend to use.
- Confirm the permitted paper weight and surface; heavy or textured art paper may require a straight-through or multipurpose path.
- Select A5 in the application and printer driver, then load the paper in the orientation shown by the tray diagram.
- Run a single-sheet test and verify scaling is set to 100% or “actual size” when dimensions must remain exact.
If A5 is absent from the driver, do not assume that a custom 148 × 210 mm setting will work safely. The feed rollers, margins, sensors, and duplex path may still reject the sheet or misfeed it.

How ISO 216 defines A5
ISO 216:2007 is the second edition of the standard, published in September 2007. The International Organization for Standardization listing says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2021, remains the current edition, and is under systematic review. Its scope is trimmed sizes for writing paper and certain classes of printed matter, including administrative, commercial, and technical items such as forms and catalogues. The listing notes that newspapers, published books, posters, and special products may be covered by other standards.

The standard’s nominal size does not specify every characteristic of a sheet sold as A5. Paper thickness, basis weight, coating, grain direction, color, archival performance, and production tolerances must be obtained from the paper manufacturer. The accessible ISO listing does not provide a production-tolerance table.

Choosing A5 for a painting project
- Composition: Decide between portrait and landscape before setting up the image; rotating A5 changes only the orientation, not the area.
- Medium: Select a surface made for your paint. A dimension label alone does not make ordinary copier paper suitable for wet media.
- Border: Reserve a clean margin if the work will be framed, scanned, or trimmed.
- Scaling: Keep the A-series ratio when enlarging to A4, or expect cropping when moving to non-A formats such as US Letter.
- Handling: Test the sheet through the intended printer or scanner before preparing a batch of originals.
