What does Chuseok celebrate?
Chuseok is one of Korea’s most important holidays, alongside Seollal, the lunar New Year. The name Hangawi is another name for Chuseok, which is associated with the autumn season and harvest. The Korea Tourism Organization’s Chuseok guide explains the holiday and its customs.
How do people observe Chuseok?
Family gatherings and ancestral remembrance
Some families hold charye, a memorial rite honoring ancestors, and visit family graves in a custom called seongmyo. These practices are not universal. Seoul’s 2026 guide notes that traditional rituals have become less common, while many people still travel to their hometowns to gather with family. Customs vary between families and continue to change.
