Contemporary art is art made in the present and recent past. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) currently describes it as “roughly 1980 to today,” but there is no universally fixed starting year. Museums set slightly different boundaries, so “contemporary” is best understood as a flexible label for recent artistic practice and its relationship to current life.

What does “contemporary art” mean?

In ordinary language, contemporary means existing or happening now. In art history, the term identifies work made by living artists and by artists of the recent past, especially work that responds to the conditions of its own time. MoMA defines contemporary art as “art made in the present and recent past, currently understood as roughly 1980 to today” (MoMA, “Contemporary art”).

This is a practical period label, not a rule that every museum, country or scholar applies identically. A work can be called contemporary because of when it was made, because it engages with present-day issues, or both. A painting made decades ago may remain influential to contemporary practice, while a recent work may deliberately look backward.

When does contemporary art begin?

There is no single global beginning. Institutional definitions show why the date remains approximate:

Institution or definition Approximate starting point How to read it
MoMA About 1980 A commonly used museum timeline running to the present.
Institute of Contemporary Art, London 1947 An earlier postwar boundary.
New Museum, New York 1977 A late-1970s institutional boundary.
Tate Rolling previous-ten-years approach A definition that moves forward as new work enters the recent past.
Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) Approximately the 1970s to today Emphasis on current and very recent practice, often by living artists.

These ranges are not competing claims about a definitive year. They reflect different collection histories, exhibition missions and national contexts. For a particular exhibition, use the institution’s own date range.

What is the difference between modern and contemporary art?

Modern art usually names an earlier historical period, while contemporary art describes a moving relationship to the present. MoMA places modern art roughly from the 1880s to the 1970s (MoMA, “Modern art”). Contemporary art follows in that museum timeline, but the transition was gradual rather than a single worldwide changeover.

Question Modern art Contemporary art
Typical period About the 1880s–1970s in MoMA’s chronology Roughly 1980 to the present in MoMA’s chronology; other institutions begin earlier
Historical emphasis Breaks with academic traditions and develops new visual languages Responds to current and recent social, political, technological and cultural conditions
Media Painting, sculpture, photography and other developing modern forms Painting and sculpture alongside video, performance, installation, digital and hybrid forms
Relationship to the present An established historical period A flexible, continually shifting category

The labels can overlap in surveys and conversation. “Modern” does not simply mean “new,” and “contemporary” does not mean that an artwork must look technologically advanced.

What kinds of work count as contemporary art?

Contemporary practice has no required medium or visual style. Artists may combine traditional craft with new technology, or make work that exists temporarily in a particular site.

  • Painting and drawing: Artists may use recognizable imagery, abstraction, text, digital references or unconventional materials.
  • Sculpture and object-based work: Found objects, industrial materials and constructed environments can replace traditional carved or cast forms.
  • Photography and video: Moving-image works can be single-channel films, multi-screen installations, documentaries or digitally manipulated images.
  • Performance: The artist’s actions, duration and interaction with an audience may be the work; documentation can be part of its later life.
  • Installation: Objects, sound, light and architecture are arranged so that the viewer experiences a whole environment rather than a single isolated object.
  • Digital and networked work: Software, online platforms, generative systems and virtual spaces may be the medium or subject.
  • Interdisciplinary projects: Contemporary artists often combine research, design, activism, sound, craft, science or community participation.

MoMA highlights experimentation with video, performance and installation, as well as the appropriation of existing images and objects and the blurring of art with popular culture. These are recurring strategies, not mandatory features.

What subjects and ideas does contemporary art address?

Because artists work within their own historical moment, contemporary art often examines issues such as migration, race, gender, climate change, war, labor, surveillance, identity, technology and unequal access to power. A work may tell a personal story, investigate a local history or question a dominant public narrative.

Political subject matter alone does not make a work contemporary. The category also concerns how an artist makes meaning: through participation, appropriation, research, technology, site, performance or a challenge to familiar definitions of art. MoMA notes that contemporary artists come from varied backgrounds and use many materials and techniques while exploring the social and political issues of their time.

Why does contemporary art sometimes question what counts as art?

Many contemporary artists examine the systems that give art its status. A project might use an everyday object, invite visitors to contribute, reproduce a mass-media image, or expose how museums and galleries frame value and authorship. The work may therefore include its context, instructions, documentation or audience response—not only a permanent object.

This institutional critique can be subtle. An installation may change how you move through a gallery; an appropriated image may test who owns a picture or whose perspective it represents; a participatory project may make viewers part of the work. Understanding the setting and the artist’s method is often as important as identifying the medium.

How to recognize and discuss a contemporary artwork

  1. Check the date and context. Find out when and where the work was made, and which definition the exhibiting institution uses.
  2. Identify the medium and format. Ask whether it is a painting, object, performance, installation, video, digital work or combination.
  3. Look for the work’s relationship to the present. Note the social, political, technological or cultural conditions it addresses.
  4. Consider participation and site. Determine whether the viewer’s movement, choices or presence completes the work, and whether it depends on a particular location.
  5. Examine sources and appropriation. Ask which existing images, objects, stories or popular-cultural forms appear, and what their reuse changes.
  6. Question the institution. Consider how the gallery, museum, label, collection or market affects what you see as art and how you value it.

Is contemporary art the same as “new art”?

No. Newness can describe the date of production, but contemporary art is not defined by novelty alone. An artist may revive an old technique, quote an earlier movement or work in a deliberately traditional style while addressing present concerns. Conversely, a technologically advanced object is not automatically meaningful contemporary art simply because it uses new equipment.

Where can you read an institutional definition?

For a concise museum glossary, consult MoMA’s “Contemporary art” and its companion entry on “Modern art”. Tate’s overview explains why institutions choose different start dates (Tate, “Contemporary art”). IMMA’s educational guide discusses the relationship between modern and contemporary art (IMMA, “What is modern and contemporary art?”).

MoMA’s collection contains almost 200,000 works; more than 83,000 artworks by over 26,000 artists are available online, according to its collection information (MoMA, “About the Collection”). Those figures describe MoMA’s holdings, not the size of the worldwide contemporary-art field.

The Bottom Line

Contemporary art means art of the present and recent past, but its boundary moves. Treat the date as approximate, then look at the medium, the work’s engagement with current conditions and the way it challenges established ideas about art and its institutions.
