DALL-E is a family of OpenAI generative AI systems that creates images from written descriptions. It converts a prompt into a representation of a scene, then generates and refines visual information to produce an image that fits the description. It does not simply search for a matching picture and paste it into a result.
The name covers several generations, not one unchanging technology. DALL-E 3 is now described by OpenAI as a previous-generation model, and its API is deprecated; OpenAI points developers to its newer GPT Image offerings for current image-generation work. OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 model page and Help Center guidance distinguish the older model from that newer direction.

What is DALL-E?
DALL-E is a text-to-image generative AI system: a user describes a desired image in ordinary language, and the model generates a new image conditioned on that prompt. It is also multimodal in the broad sense that it connects language with visual representations.
The name is commonly understood as a blend of surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and WALL-E, the Pixar robot. That wordplay is not a claim that the system imitates Dalí’s style.
DALL-E differs from familiar image tools in what it does:
- Image search finds existing images; DALL-E generates an image from learned patterns.
- Traditional graphics software applies operations chosen by a person, such as drawing a path or adjusting a layer. DALL-E responds to a natural-language description rather than a sequence of explicit drawing commands.
- Image classification labels or analyzes a supplied image; text-to-image generation creates visual output.
- Image editing changes an existing image. Text-to-image generation can start from a prompt alone, though particular tools may also support editing.
DALL-E is probabilistic: the same or similar prompt can lead to different plausible results. Its output is not a guaranteed, exact execution of a formal specification.

At a high level, image-generation models learn from examples that connect images with text descriptions. They develop statistical representations of visual patterns and language, including how objects look, how colors and materials are described, and how relationships such as “behind,” “inside,” or “holding” tend to appear.

This is not a fixed dictionary in which each word points to one picture. Context matters: “apple” might mean a piece of fruit, a logo, or a symbolic object depending on the surrounding words. The system learns patterns across examples rather than consulting a simple word-to-image lookup table.
OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 paper emphasizes improving the descriptions paired with training images. Its approach used a captioning system to produce more detailed synthetic captions, then used those descriptions to train text-to-image models. The paper focuses on caption quality and prompt-following evaluation; it does not disclose a complete training dataset or full production implementation. OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 paper describes this work.
How does DALL-E generate an image from a prompt?
The specific process differs across generations. The following is a useful high-level account of the documented DALL-E approaches and diffusion systems; it should not be taken as a full description of OpenAI’s proprietary production implementation.
- It represents the prompt. The system converts text into numerical representations that capture concepts and relationships. For DALL-E 3, a historical API description also documented a prompt-rewriting process that expanded user prompts before generation. That was a DALL-E 3-era behavior, not a universal rule for every current OpenAI image product. OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 API overview discusses it.
- It establishes a visual target. The model uses the prompt representation to guide which objects, styles, and relationships should appear. In DALL-E 2, a CLIP-related text embedding and a prior helped produce an image embedding for a diffusion decoder.
- It creates or refines an encoded image representation. Diffusion systems typically begin with noise or a noisy compressed representation and repeatedly refine it while conditioning on the prompt. A latent representation is a compressed mathematical form of an image: working in it can be more efficient than directly manipulating every visible pixel.
- It decodes the result. The final representation is converted into pixels that can be viewed as an ordinary image.
“Removing noise” is a useful shorthand, not a claim that the model paints consciously or reasons like a person. The generation process consists of learned numerical operations. OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 paper describes a latent diffusion decoder built on a variational autoencoder’s latent space, with work aimed at improving details such as text and faces. The paper explains the published approach.
How did DALL-E 1, 2, and 3 differ?
| Generation | Documented approach | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| DALL-E 1 | Autoregressive generation of image tokens, conditioned on text. | It treated an image as a sequence of discrete visual symbols and predicted them in sequence. This early approach is not representative of every later DALL-E system. |
| DALL-E 2 | A CLIP-based prior followed by a diffusion decoder. | The prior generated an image embedding from a caption; the decoder generated an image from that representation. The system supported image generation and, in its API ecosystem, variations and editing such as inpainting. OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 paper describes the architecture. |
| DALL-E 3 | Training with highly descriptive synthetic captions and a latent diffusion decoder. | Its published work focused on stronger prompt following and improved handling of detailed descriptions. OpenAI’s reported evaluations are its own evaluations, not an independent universal ranking of image models. OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 paper provides the methodology and results. |

Its fluency can make an image look convincing while details are wrong. A helpful distinction is between semantic plausibility (the image broadly depicts the requested idea), literal accuracy (every requested detail appears), physical accuracy (anatomy, perspective, shadows, and physics make sense), and production accuracy (the asset meets exact brand, technical, or legal requirements). A model may do well at the first and fail at the others.
Typical issues include misspelled text, incorrect counts, distorted hands or faces, objects merged together, inconsistent reflections, omitted instructions, and spatial relationships that do not match the prompt. Biases in training data can also show up in generated images. These failures occur because the system is optimized to produce plausible images, not to guarantee every constraint as a drawing program or engineering tool might.

How should you write a DALL-E prompt?
Longer is not automatically better. A useful prompt gives the model the details that matter most, especially the subject, action, setting, composition, and medium. Add constraints only when they help clarify the intended result.
- Name the subject and action: what should be shown, and what is happening?
- Set the scene: where is it, and what surrounds it?
- Describe composition: close-up or wide view, overhead or eye-level, centered or off to one side.
- Choose a medium or style: for example, editorial photograph, watercolor, or flat vector illustration.
- Specify visual qualities: lighting, color palette, and mood.
- State important constraints: include or exclude elements that matter to the result.
For example: “A cinematic editorial photograph of a weathered blue bicycle leaning against a brick wall outside a small neighborhood bookstore, early-morning sunlight, shallow depth of field, warm muted colors, landscape composition, no people, no visible brand logos.”
Use concrete descriptions instead of ambiguous terms by themselves. For multiple objects or people, name each one and state their positions and relationships. Avoid conflicting instructions, put the most important request early, and treat a first result as a draft. If an image matters, inspect details at full resolution and generate alternatives or edit the result in a tool that offers more precise control.

Can DALL-E put readable text in an image?
It can generate text, and OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 paper discusses improvements to fine details that include text. That is not a guarantee of accurate typography. Short labels or a simple headline are less demanding than long paragraphs, tables, or a carefully arranged diagram, but any generated wording can still be misspelled, altered, or incomplete.

ChatGPT image generation
ChatGPT offers a conversational route to image generation, but a ChatGPT image should not automatically be called a DALL-E image. Product features and underlying models can change; use the model name only when the relevant OpenAI documentation identifies it. See OpenAI’s documentation distinguishing ChatGPT and API features and ChatGPT.
The DALL-E 3 API
OpenAI’s developer documentation lists DALL-E 3 at POST /v1/images/generations, with text input, image output, and sizes of 1024×1024, 1024×1536, and 1536×1024. However, OpenAI now marks the model as deprecated and previous-generation, so it is not a sensible default for a new integration. Existing developers should check the live model page for availability, limits, and migration guidance before relying on it.

New OpenAI integrations
OpenAI’s Help Center directs developers toward the GPT Image API as its newer image-generation offering. It identifies GPT Image models as compatible with Zero Data Retention, unlike DALL-E 3 and DALL-E 2; organizations should check the current platform documentation and their own data-control settings before sending sensitive material. The API availability article and platform data-controls documentation cover these distinctions.
What safety and ethical limits should users consider?
Automated safeguards may refuse or alter requests involving sexual content, graphic violence, exploitation, criminal misuse, or sensitive depictions of real people. Safeguards do not eliminate misuse: generated images can still be used for deception, impersonation, or misinformation. A photorealistic image is not proof that an event happened.
- Review use, not just output: consider whether an image could mislead viewers or violate another person’s privacy or rights.
- Be cautious with likenesses: generic people, public figures, and private individuals raise different consent and policy concerns.
- Check the applicable terms and law: copyright, publicity rights, and commercial-use questions depend on jurisdiction, content, contract terms, and platform policies. There is no blanket rule that every generated image is copyright-free or cleared for commercial use.
- Inspect for bias and factual errors: the model can reproduce stereotypes and create convincing but inaccurate details.
Is DALL-E still the right choice?
DALL-E remains useful to understand the history of text-to-image generation and may matter to existing workflows built around it. But DALL-E 3 is a deprecated API model, not OpenAI’s default direction for new image integrations. For a new project, compare current options on model status, editing support, text rendering, consistency, output formats, rate limits, pricing, data retention, and commercial terms. For a painter or illustrator, the practical question is whether rapid visual exploration is worth the trade-off in control: DALL-E can help develop an idea, but human judgment and conventional tools remain essential for exact, finished work.
