Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is a Hindu festival observed on the tenth day of Ashvin, a lunar-calendar month that usually falls in September or October. Its date changes each year. The festival is often associated with Rama’s victory over Ravana, but that story is not universal: celebrations across India also honor Durga, local goddesses and distinct regional traditions.

Why is Dussehra celebrated?
In a widely known account connected to the Ramayana, Dussehra marks Rama’s victory over Ravana. In many parts of North India, the story is brought to life through Ramlila performances, followed by Ravan Dahan, the ceremonial burning of Ravana effigies. India’s tourism overview describes this familiar account alongside other regional traditions: Incredible India’s Dussehra overview.
Other observances foreground different stories and deities. In Bengal, Vijaya Dashami concludes Durga Puja; in Mysuru, Dasara honors Chamundeshwari and her victory over Mahishasura. Bastar’s festival is a particularly clear reminder that Dussehra does not mean one story everywhere: the official tourism account says its celebration is not associated with Ravana’s death in the Ramayana.
How is Dussehra celebrated in different regions?
Rituals, performances and event schedules vary by place. These examples show why it is more accurate to speak of Dussehra traditions in the plural than to treat one observance as universal.
| Place | Story or focus | Described observance |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Rama’s victory over Ravana | Ramlila dramatizations and Ravan Dahan, as described by Delhi Tourism. |
| Bengal and Kolkata | Vijaya Dashami concludes Durga Puja | The national tourism overview describes immersion of Durga idols: Incredible India. |
| Mysuru | Chamundeshwari’s victory over Mahishasura | The overview features a procession and palace illumination: Incredible India. |
| Bastar, Chhattisgarh | Local goddess worship and traditions; the official account says it is not based on Ravana’s death | A distinctive festival described as lasting approximately 75 days; confirm the current schedule locally. Incredible India: Bastar Dussehra. |
| Maharashtra | Regional customs associated with the festival | Described practices include Shastra Puja, Simollanghan and, in many locations, Ravan Dahan: Maharashtra Tourism. |
| Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh | Celebration centered on Kanaka Durga Temple | The tourism listing gives October 11–20, 2026; check for schedule updates before making plans. Incredible India: Vijayawada Dussehra. |
When is Dussehra in 2026?
Dussehra falls on the tenth day of Ashvin, so its Gregorian date changes from year to year. Incredible India lists Dussehra in 2026 as Tuesday, October 20: 2026 Dussehra overview. That national date does not establish every local event’s schedule or ritual timing. For a particular destination, check the relevant temple, event organizer or local government; the Vijayawada listing, for example, gives a city event period of October 11–20, 2026.

What should visitors check before attending?
- Confirm dates and timings with the local organizer, since event schedules and rituals differ by destination and can change.
- Check with the venue or local government for current access information, especially for temple-centered observances and large public events.
- Do not assume a Ramlila or Ravan Dahan is the main observance in every region; local goddess traditions may be central instead.
