Fresco is a wall-painting technique in which pigments are applied to plaster. In buon fresco, the artist paints with water-based pigment on fresh, wet lime plaster; as the plaster dries and sets, the pigment becomes integrated with its surface. Painting on dry plaster is called fresco a secco. A mural is not automatically a fresco: the defining feature is how the paint relates to the plaster.
How is a fresco made?
- Prepare the wall with plaster. Fresco walls receive layers of plaster. In the terminology used by the National Gallery, the underlayer is the arriccio and the final, smooth layer is the intonaco. National Gallery glossary
- Apply fresh intonaco in a manageable area. For buon fresco, the artist spreads only as much fresh finish plaster as can be painted while it is still wet. Each day’s area is called a giornata (plural: giornate).
- Paint with pigment dispersed in water. The artist applies the pigment to the wet surface before it dries. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes a practical working period of about seven hours, but that is not a universal deadline: conditions and surface preparation affect how long the plaster remains workable. Canadian Conservation Institute
- Let the plaster set. As lime plaster absorbs carbon dioxide and transforms into calcium carbonate, the pigment becomes locked into the surface. Areas that need additions or corrections after the plaster has dried may be painted a secco.
The need to finish each giornata before its plaster dries makes planning part of the technique: the artist must decide how to divide the image into daily sections and work within each section’s wet-plaster window.
What is the difference between buon fresco, fresco a secco, and mezzo fresco?
| Method | Where the pigment is applied | How it adheres |
|---|---|---|
| Buon fresco | Fresh, wet intonaco | Pigment is mixed with water and becomes integrated with the plaster as it sets; this is generally the most durable method. Canadian Conservation Institute |
| Fresco a secco | Dry plaster | A binder, such as egg tempera, glue, or oil, helps the pigment adhere. These passages are more vulnerable to flaking. MoMA The Metropolitan Museum of Art |
| Mezzo fresco | Nearly dry intonaco | A transitional method described by the National Galleries of Scotland as popular during the Italian Renaissance. National Galleries of Scotland |
Historical paintings can combine wet-plaster and dry-plaster passages, so calling a work a fresco does not necessarily mean every part was painted by the same method. MoMA’s conservator describes evidence of both techniques in Diego Rivera’s Indian Warrior. MoMA

A mural is a painting made for a wall or other permanent architectural surface. Fresco describes a particular way of painting with plaster. A mural may be made in fresco, but the word “mural” alone does not tell you whether its paint was applied to wet plaster, dry plaster, or another kind of surface.

That distinction also matters when describing mixed techniques. A wall painting can include buon fresco as well as a secco passages, rather than fitting neatly into only one method.
Why were frescoes painted on wet plaster?
In buon fresco, wet plaster is not simply a convenient background: it is part of how the paint becomes durable. As the lime plaster sets, pigment applied in water becomes integrated into the surface. By contrast, paint added to dry plaster needs a binder to adhere, and dry-applied passages are more prone to flaking.

The trade-off is time. Artists have to paint each area while its intonaco is still wet, which is why frescoes are divided into giornate and why later changes may be made a secco.
Why does fresco matter in art history?
Fresco has been used to decorate homes, churches, and public buildings from antiquity onward. The National Galleries of Scotland traces examples to Minoan Crete and Bronze Age Greece, and identifies the technique as especially important in Italian Renaissance painting. Notable examples include Giotto’s frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel, Fra Angelico’s work at San Marco, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. National Galleries of Scotland

Italian wall painting also served religious, civic, and domestic settings. The Metropolitan Museum notes that such painting decorated churches, public buildings, and private homes; it also discusses the greater flaking risk of dry-wall embellishments. The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Fresco remained part of modern mural practice. Diego Rivera studied Italian fresco traditions and adapted wet- and dry-plaster techniques. MoMA also describes his “portable murals”: freestanding panels made with cement and steel backing rather than painted directly onto a wall. MoMA National Galleries of Scotland
