Kintsugi is a Japanese ceramic-repair practice that joins broken pieces with lacquer—traditionally urushi—and highlights the seams with gold or another metallic powder. Instead of hiding damage, the repair makes an object’s history visible. Traditional kintsugi is a slow, skilled craft; quicker kits use different materials and should be treated as kintsugi-style repairs, not assumed to be equivalent or food-safe.

What kintsugi means—and what it is

Often translated as “golden joinery,” kintsugi restores broken ceramics while leaving the repair conspicuous. The gold line is not simply decoration laid over a crack: it marks a join made with lacquer and repair materials. A traditional repair may also fill missing fragments, so the finished surface can record both the break and the work of mending it.

The practice is often discussed alongside wabi-sabi, an appreciation of age, imperfection and transience. Kyoto craftsman Muneaki Shimode told Make: that understanding the history and spiritual background of the materials matters. He also described kintsugi as a way to repair one’s own dish, and said its importance lies less in appearance than in the beauty and significance it leaves with the person looking at it.

Where kintsugi came from

The historical account presented by Web Japan places the technique’s development in the Muromachi period (1336–1573), when tea ceremony culture gave valuable tea bowls particular importance. Earlier repairs sometimes used metal staples, called kasugaidome; the account describes the search for a more aesthetic repair and says the classical method was perfected in the Edo period (1603–1868). The sources do not establish a single origin incident, so the period-based account is more reliable than a dramatic founding legend.

  1. Prepare and join the fragments. Pieces are fitted together and bonded with urushi-based material. The Japan Times describes a glue made from urushi, flour and water; Web Japan describes urushi with rice powder and mountain soil among the classical materials.
  2. Fill gaps and losses. Missing areas can be rebuilt with urushi-based putty mixed with sawdust or powdered stone, as described by Web Japan.
  3. Allow the lacquer to cure. Urushi needs suitable humid conditions to harden. The Japan Times describes drying in humid air for about a month; Web Japan says completing a piece can take up to two months. These are reported process estimates, not a guaranteed schedule for every repair.
  4. Polish, recoat and finish. After curing, the repair is polished and re-coated as needed. Metallic powder, commonly gold, is applied to the finished seam.

Urushi can irritate skin, and its cure depends on controlled conditions. Follow the material maker’s handling and curing instructions rather than treating traditional lacquer like ordinary craft glue.

Traditional urushi or a simplified kintsugi-style kit?

Kits can make practice more accessible: Web Japan reports that tools and materials are sold together and that instructional videos help people learn independently. Some quicker methods instead use water-resistant craft glue described as safe for tableware, then acrylic ceramic paint over the join. That is a simplified, kintsugi-style repair rather than the traditional urushi process.

Consideration Traditional urushi Simplified kit method
Materials Urushi lacquer and traditional repair materials; metallic powder finishes the seam. May use water-resistant craft adhesive and acrylic ceramic paint; verify the exact kit contents.
Time and curing Humidity-dependent curing; the Japan Times describes about a month of drying, while Web Japan says completion can take up to two months. Potentially quicker, but timing depends on the specific product and its instructions; no general duration is established.
Skill Requires careful fitting, filling, finishing and control of curing conditions. Designed to be more approachable for self-guided practice, but results depend on the product and technique.
Durability Web Japan reports historical repaired objects that remain intact after more than 200 years; that does not predict the performance of an individual new repair. Not established across kits; adhesive, ceramic, preparation and use all matter.
Food contact Do not infer suitability from a traditional material or gold seam; use only with explicit, applicable food-contact guidance. Do not assume all kits or painted seams are food-safe. Check the adhesive, pigment, curing directions and manufacturer’s food-contact guidance.
Cost Not stated in the cited sources. Not stated in the cited sources.

The Japan Times notes that some businesses increasingly recommend synthetic adhesives as the urushi industry declines, while traditional specialists remain limited. Some newer urushi formulations can also be used on glass, including wine glasses, but material suitability depends on the particular formulation and object.

Choosing between a kit, a class and a professional repair

  • Try a kit when the object is replaceable or the goal is learning. Read its material and safety instructions before starting, and test your skills on an object with little monetary or sentimental value.
  • Take a class if you want guidance on handling materials and working through the repair steps. Web Japan reports that kintsugi classes have become popular in Japan and overseas.
  • Ask a professional about a valuable, fragile or deeply meaningful piece. A specialist can assess whether the fragments and missing areas can be repaired and explain the method and expected turnaround before work begins.

Kintsugi Workshop Rium, founded in 2016, is one example of a contemporary workshop profiled by the Japan Times. Its founder, Okisato Nagata, describes kintsugi as a way of valuing the “wounds” of broken objects and highlighting cracks formed by chance. The specific workshop’s availability, location and services may change.

What to check before using repaired pottery

A gold-colored seam is not proof that a repaired bowl, cup or plate is suitable for food. Before using any repaired piece for food or drink, check the exact adhesive and pigment, follow the complete curing instructions, and confirm that the manufacturer explicitly supports the intended food contact. If that guidance is absent or unclear, keep the piece decorative. Do not assume a repair is suitable for a dishwasher, microwave or hot liquids unless the product maker specifically says so.

Kintsugi as repair, craft and outlook

Kintsugi is both a practical way to mend ceramics and a craft that makes mending part of an object’s appearance. Nagata told the Japan Times that repair can refine an object by drawing attention to fractures created by chance, and that continued use matters. That meaning is personal rather than a claim that every damaged object must be repaired: the method offers one way to preserve an object while allowing its history to remain visible.

For readers who want a broader introduction, Japan Society’s 2021 review of Bonnie Kemske’s Kintsugi: The Poetic Mend describes a book covering the practice’s origins, repair types, contemporary use, demonstrations and metaphor. The review identifies Herbert Press and ISBN 978-1912217991.
