Lace fabric is an ornamental openwork textile: its threads form a patterned structure with decorative openings. It can be made by hand or machine, using several different techniques, so “lace” describes a family of fabrics rather than one construction method. This guide focuses on lace as a textile, not shoelaces.

What is lace fabric?

The Smithsonian defines lace as “an ornamental openwork fabric created by looping, twisting, braiding or knotting threads either by hand or by machine.” The arrangement of the threads creates both the motifs and the open spaces that distinguish lace. In some kinds, the lace structure is made independently; in others, motifs decorate or sit on a net or fabric ground.

That variety matters when choosing lace for a sewing project: the name alone does not tell you its fiber, stretch, backing, drape, or care requirements.

How is lace made?

Needle lace

Needle lace is built stitch by stitch with a needle and a single thread. The maker forms loops and buttonhole-like stitches to create the fabric. Needle lace can also be combined with other techniques in the same piece.

Bobbin lace

In bobbin lace, multiple threads wound on bobbins are twisted, crossed, plaited, or interwoven according to a pattern. The work is arranged on a support and held in place with pins. Bobbins are tools for making this kind of lace, not a defining feature of lace fabric generally.

Decorated net and other methods

Some lace is made by embellishing a net with darning, embroidery, or applied motifs. Lace-making approaches also include crochet, knitting, tatting, netting, macramé, and sprang. The word therefore does not identify a single technique, and a product’s appearance alone may not reveal how it was made.

How did lace develop?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes lace developing from cutwork: makers cut sections from woven cloth, then stabilized and embellished the remaining edges. During the sixteenth century, lacemaking became independent of that woven foundation, producing fabric in its own right. The Smithsonian describes rapid development of needle and bobbin lace in the early sixteenth century in parts of present-day Italy and Flanders.

This is a broad European development, not evidence for one uncontested inventor or a single first piece. The Met also traces changing fashions from geometric edgings to three-dimensional needle lace and later decorated net during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Construction and fashion changed together; the names applied to styles may refer to place, period, appearance, or structure, rather than to wholly different techniques.

How to choose lace fabric for a project

Compare the fabric’s actual specifications against the needs of your garment or craft project. These are screening criteria, not a universal ranking of quality.

  • Construction: Check whether the design is a free-standing lace structure or motifs on a net or fabric ground. A ground or backing can affect opacity, feel, and how the fabric behaves.
  • Fiber and backing: Read the stated fiber content and note any lining, backing, or applied elements. Do not assume that a particular lace style always uses a particular fiber.
  • Stretch and intended use: Look for stretch information and consider whether the project needs a fabric that moves with the wearer or holds a stable shape.
  • Width, weight, color, and pattern scale: Confirm the usable width and compare the pattern’s size and placement with your pattern pieces or project dimensions. A swatch can help assess color, texture, and drape before committing.
  • Care instructions: Follow the label and seller instructions for the specific fabric, fiber, and finish. There is no single washing rule that applies to every lace.

A fabric guide can help you identify available forms and specifications, but seller descriptions are not independent quality tests. Check the listing details and request a swatch when color, texture, or drape is important to the result.

How should lace be cared for?

Care depends on the fiber, construction, finish, and condition of the piece. For new fabric, use the care label and seller’s instructions rather than applying one washing method to all lace. For antique, valuable, or fragile lace, seek advice from a textile conservator; ordinary garment-care guidance may not be appropriate.
