Lohri is a winter festival especially associated with Punjab, celebrated with community bonfires, songs, dancing, and seasonal foods. It is commonly observed on January 13, though public event schedules can vary by location and year.
What is Lohri?
Lohri is a seasonal winter festival with strong ties to Punjab. India’s Ministry of Tourism describes annual celebrations in Punjab and notes that Lohri is also observed in other northern Indian states. Its customs bring people together around a fire, with music, singing, and dancing.
The festival is also linked to Punjab’s agrarian and seasonal life. That context helps explain its place in the winter calendar, but customs vary among households and communities; there is no single required way to celebrate.
When is Lohri celebrated?
Lohri is commonly celebrated on January 13, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s Lohri event description. A city’s public celebration may be scheduled on a different date: Chandigarh’s tourism department listed a public Lohri event for January 12, 2025. That listing describes a particular event, not a change to the commonly cited festival date. Check local announcements for the current year’s schedule.

Maghi follows Lohri in the seasonal calendar. Incredible India says the Maghi Mela in Muktsar usually takes place a day after Lohri; that describes the mela, not necessarily every community’s calendar practice.
Why do people celebrate Lohri?
Lohri marks the winter season and is associated with seasonal and agrarian life in Punjab. Official descriptions emphasize gathering around a sacred or community fire, making offerings, and sharing folk music and dance.

The festival is also popularly associated with Dulha Bhatti, a folk hero. The Ministry of Tourism includes this association while noting that more than one explanation has been proposed for the name “Lohri.” The available official account does not establish one definitive historical origin, so the Dulha Bhatti connection is best understood as part of the festival’s folk tradition rather than a settled account of how Lohri began.

Gather around a bonfire
A community bonfire is a recurring feature in official descriptions of Lohri. The Government of Punjab’s festival page describes a sacred fire and offerings, while India’s Ministry of Tourism and Chandigarh’s tourism department describe celebrations featuring a bonfire.

Sing, dance, and celebrate together
Folk music, singing, and dancing are common parts of the celebration described by tourism and government sources. The gathering may be organized within a community or as a public event; the format depends on the place and occasion.
Share seasonal foods
Foods documented in accounts of Lohri include sesame and jaggery, peanuts, popcorn, rewari, and gajak. They are examples associated with celebrations and offerings, not a mandatory menu for every household. The Government of Punjab describes sesame seeds and jaggery, while Incredible India’s account of Lohri in Amritsar also names roasted popcorn, rewari, gajak, and peanuts.

How Lohri practices vary
Descriptions from Punjab and Amritsar share the bonfire, music, dancing, and seasonal foods, but they should not be treated as a complete rulebook for everyone who celebrates. Lohri is observed in other northern Indian states as well, and the sources do not establish that every region or family follows identical customs. For a local public celebration, use the host city’s current event information rather than assuming a date or program from another place.
