Mica powder is finely processed mica, a naturally occurring group of minerals valued for its reflective appearance and useful heat-resistant and electrically insulating properties. It is used in paints and pigments as well as cosmetics, plastics, construction materials, electronics and automotive products. The key ethical concern is not that every mica product is linked to abuse, but that child labor and unsafe conditions have been documented in some mining areas, particularly in India and Madagascar. Supply-chain initiatives report progress on traceability and audits, but those efforts do not certify an individual paint or powder as responsibly sourced.

What is mica powder?
Mica is not one mineral but a group of minerals with a layered structure that can be split into thin sheets or flakes. Mica powder is mica processed into a fine material for use in products. The Responsible Mica Initiative (RMI) describes mica as shiny and reflective, heat resistant and electrically insulating. Those properties help explain its use in decorative pigments and paints, as well as in electronics, plastics, construction materials, home appliances, batteries and automotive products.

For painters, mica powder is relevant as a reflective pigment or decorative material. Its appearance and function do not reveal where the mineral was mined or how workers were treated. The available sources do not verify the provenance of any particular retail powder or paint.

What are the ethical concerns?
RMI identifies child labor and unsafe working conditions as continuing risks in parts of the mica supply chain, particularly in informal and artisanal small-scale mining in India and Madagascar. It describes poverty, weak regulation and limited alternative livelihoods as contributing pressures. These findings concern particular places and supply-chain conditions; they do not establish that every mica product involves child labor.
What UNICEF reported in Madagascar
A UNICEF Madagascar policy brief published in November 2022 estimated that 11,406 children aged 5–17 were working alongside their families at artisanal mica sites in the southern regions of Anosy, Androy and Ihorombe. It also estimated that 4,219 children under five were living at those sites. These are estimates for the locations and circumstances covered by that brief, not a worldwide count or a current estimate for 2026.

A local account is not a national estimate
In a story published June 21, 2024, UNICEF described conditions in Tatabe, Madagascar, reporting 201 households living from mica mining and 120 child workers in that community. The account followed one 13-year-old who experienced respiratory problems and described literacy classes and school reintegration. It offers a local example of the risks and responses reported there; it is not a representative national survey.

What is known about mica’s environmental impact?
The evidence available here is stronger on labor risks and due diligence than on environmental impacts. RMI says its standards include environmental responsibility, but the cited material does not provide quantified extraction impacts or a comparable lifecycle assessment of natural mica and synthetic mica. It therefore does not support a blanket claim that either material is environmentally preferable. A synthetic label alone is not evidence of a lower overall impact.

What do responsible-sourcing programs show?
RMI describes a three-part approach: community empowerment, responsible workplace standards, and legislative and due-diligence efforts. It says members map upstream suppliers, including mines and processing sites, and encourage suppliers to adopt workplace standards. Its reported volumes and audits offer indicators of program activity, but they are organization-reported data, not proof of conditions behind a particular product.

These are different measures and should not be added together or treated as an independently established total for the global mica market. RMI cautions that data accuracy and completeness remain challenges.

Processor audits and follow-up
RMI reports that 47 processor audits were conducted from 2022 to 2025: 39 in India and eight in Madagascar. For Indian first-time audits, RMI reports an average compliance score of 64.5%, rising to 79.22% in follow-up audits after corrective-action plans; it reports 86% for follow-up scores among RMI member processors. These figures describe the audits and scope reported by RMI, not every processor or mine. RMI says eight Madagascar audits do not provide enough historical data for broad conclusions.
RMI also states that membership does not certify an organization or supply chain as child-labor-free or fully responsible. A company’s participation in an initiative is not, by itself, product-level verification.

How can a painter assess a mica claim?
When a paint, pigment or craft powder is described as responsibly sourced, look for details that let you assess the claim rather than relying on a label alone:
- Origin: Does the company name a country, mine, processor or other upstream supplier, rather than only saying “responsibly sourced”?
- Traceability: Does it explain which parts of the supply chain are mapped and how often that information is updated?
- Audit evidence: Are the standard, auditor, sites covered, audit date, findings and follow-up actions identified?
- Scope of the claim: Is the evidence specific to the product containing mica, or does it describe the company or initiative more generally?
- Material identity: Is the product made with natural mica or a synthetic alternative, and does the company provide evidence about composition and environmental impacts?
These questions can help distinguish a specific, reviewable claim from a broad assurance, but an answer from a company is not automatically independent verification. The cited sources do not establish a lifecycle winner between natural and synthetic mica or verify a specific retail product.
