Photopea is a browser-based image editor for photo editing, graphic design, illustration, PSD files, web graphics, and image-format conversion. It combines pixel-based editing with vector tools, so it can handle everything from cropping a picture to adjusting a layered Photoshop design. Its biggest advantage is opening and editing PSD files without installing Photoshop; its main caveats are that compatibility and performance depend on the file and device.
What can you use Photopea for?
Photopea is not just a photo resizer. Its layers, selections, masks, text, paths, filters, and adjustment tools support a broad range of visual work. The Photopea learning guide describes uses spanning photo processing, illustration, and web-page design.
- Crop, resize, and adjust photos. Straighten, rotate, flip, tune brightness or color, and sharpen or blur images for a website, document, or social post.
- Retouch and composite images. Use selections, layers, masks, and effects to remove unwanted areas, combine images, or build a more involved edit. The right workflow depends on the image and the level of precision required.
- Remove or replace backgrounds. Photopea advertises one-click background removal and AI-assisted content replacement. Availability, limits, and any third-party costs can vary; some AI workflows rely on outside services or credits, so check the current terms before relying on them.
- Open and edit Photoshop files. This is one of Photopea’s clearest use cases: open a PSD, inspect its layers, make changes, and save a modified working file or export a flattened image. It is useful when Photoshop is unavailable, but it does not guarantee that every font, effect, smart object, or newer Photoshop feature will look or behave identically.
- Make social-media graphics. Build posts, thumbnails, banners, profile graphics, collages, and text-over-photo designs. Layers and masks give more control than a simple template tool, though you may need to set up the canvas and layout yourself.
- Create small-business marketing materials. Prepare product images, web banners, advertisements, flyers, posters, email graphics, and branded promotional composites.
- Draw illustrations and vector artwork. Create or edit shapes, paths, icons, simple logos, and text-based designs. Dedicated vector or page-layout software may be a better fit for extensive typography, technical drawing, or complex print production.
- Prepare web and interface graphics. Make headers, buttons, icons, backgrounds, hero images, and static mockups. Photopea creates visual assets; it is not a website builder or a full UI-prototyping and collaboration platform.
- Develop RAW photographs. Photopea can open a range of camera RAW files and provides image-adjustment controls. This can be enough for a basic edit before compositing, but photographers needing cataloging, batch workflows, or tethered shooting should look to dedicated RAW software.
- Convert formats. Open a file from one design or image format and export it in another, or flatten a layered design for delivery. Format support does not always mean that every object remains editable through a round trip.
Why use Photopea instead of installing an editor?
Photopea runs in a web browser, so it can be convenient on a Chromebook, shared computer, or device where installing desktop software is difficult. The core editor is available without an account or conventional installation. It is designed for computers, tablets, and phones, but detailed selections, typography, and layer work are much easier on a larger screen with a keyboard and precise pointing device.
#1 Best Overall
It is especially appealing for occasional Photoshop-style work: open a PSD, make a targeted change, and export without setting up a full desktop workflow. That does not make it a universal Photoshop replacement. Photoshop has a broader commercial ecosystem and established production tools; Photopea is a flexible browser editor whose suitability depends on the task.
How to edit and export a file
- Open Photopea in a compatible browser.
- Choose File → Open and select a local image or design file.
- Make the changes you need, using layers when you want to keep parts of the edit separate.
- Choose File → Save to keep an editable document in a supported working format, such as PSD.
- Choose File → Export As to create a delivery file, such as PNG or JPG. Review the exported result before sending or publishing it.
Use PSD when you may need to revisit layers and edits. PNG is useful for transparency and lossless graphics; JPG is often practical for photographs and smaller files but uses lossy compression. SVG suits compatible vector artwork, while PDF can be useful for document exchange or printing. Exporting to a format that does not preserve layers will flatten the work or discard editing information. Keep a working copy before converting or overwriting an important file. See Photopea’s opening and saving guide for format-specific details.

What files does Photopea support?
Photopea handles common raster images such as PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, TIFF, HEIC, and AVIF, along with PSD and a range of design, vector, document, and camera RAW formats. The project’s official repository lists formats including AI, SVG, PDF, XCF, Sketch, XD, and several RAW types. The exact result depends on the file: one format may open with layers and editable objects, while another may arrive flattened or lose application-specific features.
For a client or production file, open a copy first. Check whether the layers, fonts, masks, effects, color appearance, and page dimensions are intact. Export a proof and verify it in the software or system that will receive the final file. A format appearing on a support list is not a promise of perfect two-way compatibility.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs Photopea private, and can it work offline?
Photopea says ordinary editing is processed locally on your device rather than uploading files to its servers. It can also work offline after the web application has loaded. Save your work manually and often: closing the browser before saving can lose unsaved changes. Details differ when you choose cloud storage, use a developer integration, or send content to a third-party AI service. Photopea’s privacy information and API documentation explain those separate arrangements.
Is Photopea good for professional work?
It can be suitable for professional tasks such as preparing web graphics, making composites, editing a straightforward PSD, or producing marketing images. The question is not simply whether it has advanced tools, but whether it supports the specific file, output requirements, and workflow you rely on.

Consider another tool if you need guaranteed one-to-one Photoshop rendering, extensive plug-ins, reliable high-volume batch processing, deep automation outside a browser, team asset management, advanced prepress controls, or demanding color-proofing. Large layered documents and RAW files can also be constrained by the computer’s memory, processor, browser, and graphics hardware. Test a representative file before making Photopea part of a critical production pipeline.
Who is Photopea for?
- Beginners who want to learn layered image editing without first installing desktop software.
- Students and teachers who need a browser-accessible editor for posters, illustrations, photo exercises, and file-format lessons. Photopea describes basic school use and separate options for branded school deployments on its schools page.
- Freelancers and small businesses handling occasional product-photo cleanup, social content, flyers, or website assets.
- Photoshop users who need to inspect or make a quick change to a PSD when Photoshop is not available.
- Developers and organizations that want to embed an editor in a webpage. Photopea’s API documents iframe embedding and configuration, file loading, resources, scripts, and ways to communicate with a developer’s server. This is an embedded browser editor, not a general-purpose server-side image-processing library.
When should you choose something else?
- Adobe Photoshop is a better fit when you depend on Adobe’s wider professional ecosystem, established agency workflows, or specialized production capabilities. Photopea is more immediately accessible for occasional browser-based editing.
- GIMP suits users who want a free, open-source desktop editor and prefer a native application. Its interface and PSD workflow differ from Photopea’s.
- Affinity Photo is worth considering if you want a dedicated desktop application for photo editing and compositing outside Adobe’s ecosystem.
- Canva is usually more convenient for template-led social posts, presentations, and collaborative marketing content. Photopea offers more granular control over pixels, layers, selections, and PSD files.
- Figma is a stronger fit for collaborative interface design and prototyping. Photopea is for image editing and graphics, not an end-to-end product-design workflow.
Photopea’s core editor is free to access, but that does not mean every optional service is unlimited or included on the same terms. Premium access, AI use, school or distributor deployments, and third-party services may have separate conditions. Check the relevant live terms if those features matter to your decision.
