sRGB is a standardized RGB color space: it defines how red, green, and blue values correspond to color. It is a dependable choice for artwork intended for general screen viewing, while wider-gamut spaces can be useful in managed workflows. For light-based calculations, convert sRGB values to linear light first.

The same numeric color can look different when interpreted as sRGB, Display P3, Adobe RGB, or another color space. sRGB also affects how you blend, shade, export, and share a painting.

sRGB is a defined color space, not just “RGB”

RGB is a color model: it describes colors using red, green, and blue components. sRGB—standard red, green, blue—is one precisely defined RGB color space. Its specification is IEC 61966-2-1:1999.

  • the chromaticity of its red, green, and blue primaries;
  • a D65 white point;
  • a transfer function that converts between stored values and light intensity;
  • reference viewing conditions and luminance levels.

HP and Microsoft proposed sRGB in 1996 as a common color language for monitors, input devices, output devices, and the Internet. It became a practical default because it covered the capabilities of typical computer displays and gave software a shared target.

Property sRGB specification
Red primary x 0.640, y 0.330
Green primary x 0.300, y 0.600
Blue primary x 0.150, y 0.060
White point D65, x 0.3127, y 0.3290
Reference white luminance 80 cd/m²
Reference black luminance 0.20 cd/m²
Typical encoded bit depth 8 bits per channel
Component range 0.0–1.0 before integer quantization

The primaries are based on HDTV ITU-R BT.709 chromaticities, but sRGB is not interchangeable with every BT.709 signal because transfer functions and intended viewing conditions can differ.

What do sRGB numbers mean?

An 8-bit sRGB painting stores three channel values from 0 through 255. A color such as #336699 contains red 51, green 102, and blue 153. An opaque 24-bit RGB image has 256³ = 16,777,216 possible channel combinations.

Those values are encoded values. They are not direct measurements of light emitted by a screen. In particular, the value 128 is not half as bright as 255. sRGB allocates code values in a nonlinear way so that dark tones receive useful precision.

For most ordinary painting and export work, you do not need to calculate the conversion yourself. The important practical rule is this: sRGB values are suitable for storing and selecting colors, but they are not automatically suitable for light-based calculations.

sRGB is approximately, but not exactly, gamma 2.2

sRGB is often described as “gamma 2.2.” That is a useful shorthand, but not the exact definition. Its transfer curve has a linear section near black and a curved section for the rest of the range.

To encode a linear-light component C as sRGB:

C’ = 12.92 × C if C ≤ 0.0031308; otherwise C’ = 1.055 × C^(1/2.4) − 0.055.

C = c / 12.92 if c ≤ 0.04045; otherwise C = ((c + 0.055) / 1.055)^2.4.

This distinction becomes visible when software blends colors, resizes an image, applies blur, or calculates lighting. For physically meaningful operations, the encoded sRGB values should first be converted to linear-light sRGB.

sRGB versus linear-light sRGB

These are related representations, but they are not interchangeable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • sRGB: nonlinear encoded values used by common image formats, legacy CSS colors, and most color pickers.
  • srgb-linear: the same primaries and D65 white point, but with values proportional to light intensity.

CSS Color 4 describes these as equivalent colors:

color(srgb 0.691 0.139 0.259)
color(srgb-linear 0.435 0.017 0.055)

For a digital painter, linear-light processing is most relevant when an application offers a linear workflow, physically based brushes, realistic glow, or light compositing. Ordinary painting in an sRGB document is not automatically wrong; it is simply a different workflow.

Why blending in sRGB can look muddy

Suppose you mix black and white by averaging their stored sRGB values. The midpoint is numerically 128, or about 50% in the channel. But decoded into light, that midpoint is only about 21.5% of the white intensity—not 50%.

That is why a simple digital blend can appear darker than a physical mixture of light would suggest. The effect is especially noticeable in:

  • soft glows and bloom;
  • screen-style lighting;
  • blurred highlights;
  • scaled-down artwork with fine bright details;
  • transparent overlays and additive effects.

When an application supports it, perform light-like compositing in linear light, then convert the result back to sRGB for ordinary display and export. For hand-painted opaque strokes, however, the visual behavior of the specific brush engine often matters more than applying a blanket “linear is always better” rule.

sRGB’s gamut and wide-gamut color

A color space’s gamut is the range of colors it can represent. sRGB has a narrower gamut than Display P3, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB, and Rec. 2020.

A saturated color may exist in Display P3 but fall outside sRGB. Converting it to sRGB requires gamut mapping. Simple clipping can reduce saturation or shift the apparent hue, so a vivid wide-gamut painting may look flatter after conversion.

A wide-gamut monitor does not make an sRGB painting wide gamut. The display’s capability and the image’s color definition are separate:

  • An sRGB image on a wide-gamut monitor should be color-managed and displayed as its intended sRGB color.
  • A Display P3 image can contain colors outside sRGB, but viewers and export platforms may not handle them consistently.

For artwork intended for websites, portfolios, general-purpose printing, or clients with unknown software, sRGB remains the safest delivery target. Keep a wide-gamut master only when you have a clear reason and a color-managed handoff.

How sRGB affects a digital painting workflow

1. Choose the document color profile at creation

When creating a document, look for a setting named Color Profile, Color Space, or ICC Profile. Select sRGB—often listed as sRGB IEC61966-2.1—for work destined for ordinary screens.

In a painting application, do not confuse the profile with bit depth. A document can be sRGB at 8 bits, 16 bits, or another precision depending on the program. Bit depth controls tonal and color precision; sRGB controls how the RGB values are interpreted.

2. Check the profile before importing assets

Photos, textures, reference images, and stock elements may be tagged Adobe RGB, Display P3, or another profile. A color-managed application can convert them into the document’s working space. If it asks whether to assign or convert, those choices are different:

Choice What happens
Assign profile The existing numbers are kept but given a new interpretation. Colors can change dramatically.
Convert to profile The appearance is preserved as closely as possible while the RGB numbers are recalculated for the destination space.

When an imported image already has a valid profile, converting it to the document profile is usually the safer operation.

3. Convert when exporting for general use

Before exporting a JPEG or PNG for a website, check the export dialog for a color-profile option. Convert the image to sRGB and, where the application offers the choice, embed the sRGB profile. Do not merely assign sRGB to a wide-gamut file; that relabels the numbers instead of translating the colors.

Keep your layered working file separately. Exporting a flattened sRGB copy protects the version intended for broad compatibility while preserving the option to make a different print or wide-gamut delivery later.

sRGB in CSS and web artwork

Legacy CSS color forms—including named colors, hexadecimal colors, rgb(), rgba(), hsl(), and hwb()—represent colors in sRGB. Modern CSS also supports wider spaces such as Display P3 and Rec. 2020, as well as perceptual spaces such as Oklab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CSS can state sRGB and linear-light sRGB explicitly:

color: color(srgb 0.2 0.4 0.8);
color: color(srgb-linear 0.0331 0.1329 0.6038);

For color-mix(), the current default interpolation space is Oklab, not sRGB. You can request a specific space:

color-mix(in srgb, red, blue)
color-mix(in srgb-linear, red, blue)
color-mix(in oklab, red, blue)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use ordinary sRGB when matching a legacy web palette or an existing sRGB asset. Use linear sRGB for light-like calculations, and Oklab for generally more perceptually even interpolation.

What happens when an image has no profile?

An embedded ICC profile tells color-managed software how to interpret the image’s RGB numbers. If a web image has no profile, sRGB has historically been the usual assumption, but that is a convention rather than a guarantee of identical behavior in every application.

Color management also cannot make every monitor match perfectly. Display calibration, brightness, ambient light, viewing angle, operating-system settings, and the application itself all affect what you see. sRGB standardizes the source color definition; it does not turn every physical screen into the same screen.

Common sRGB mistakes

  1. Calling every RGB image sRGB. RGB is the model; sRGB is one particular space.
  2. Assuming “gamma 2.2” is the full specification. The official sRGB curve is piecewise.
  3. Treating 128 as half the light of 255. Decode the values to linear light before making that comparison.
  4. Relabeling instead of converting. Assigning an sRGB profile to a wide-gamut image can cause incorrect color interpretation.
  5. Assuming a wide-gamut display expands an sRGB file. Proper color management preserves the file’s defined colors rather than inventing colors outside its gamut.
  6. Ignoring the delivery target. A wide-gamut master may be useful, but an sRGB export is often the most dependable version for general online viewing.

FAQ

Is sRGB the same as RGB?

No. RGB is a general color model based on red, green, and blue channels. sRGB is a specific standardized RGB color space with defined primaries, a D65 white point, and a transfer function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should digital paintings use sRGB?

Use sRGB when the painting is mainly for websites, social media, ordinary monitors, or viewers whose color setup is unknown. A wider-gamut space can be appropriate for a managed print or display workflow, but export an sRGB version for broad compatibility.

Is sRGB better than Display P3 for artists?

Neither is universally better. Display P3 can represent more saturated colors, while sRGB is more widely supported and predictable. Choose according to the delivery target, then convert rather than simply relabeling the file.

Why does my painting look different after export?

Common causes include a changed or missing ICC profile, exporting a wide-gamut image as if it were sRGB, an untagged source being interpreted differently, or differences in display calibration and application color management.

The Bottom Line

sRGB is the practical common language of digital color: a defined RGB space with a relatively modest gamut, nonlinear encoding, and broad software support. Work in it when dependable screen delivery matters. Convert wide-gamut assets properly, use linear-light values for light-based calculations when your software supports them, and export an explicitly converted sRGB copy for general viewing.
