Puzzle glue is made to spread over an assembled jigsaw, bond its pieces and often seal the image for display. “Regular glue” could mean several different adhesives, so the label alone cannot tell you whether it will work. Clear PVA may be a fallback, but use it only when its directions and the puzzle’s needs make it suitable. If you want to take the puzzle apart later, display it in a frame without glue.
What is the difference between puzzle glue and regular glue?
Puzzle glue, also called puzzle conserver, is intended for coating a completed jigsaw. It bonds the pieces and commonly seals the printed face so the puzzle can be framed or hung as one object. “Regular glue” is not a single type of adhesive: it might refer to white school glue, clear PVA, wood glue, craft glue or spray adhesive, each with its own formulation and directions.
The distinction is therefore about intended use, not a guarantee that one label means “safe” and the other means “unsafe.” A product’s suitability depends on whether it is appropriate for paper or cardboard, how it dries, and whether you can spread it evenly without soaking the puzzle. Ravensburger’s UK framing article identifies clear PVA as a fallback if puzzle glue is unavailable, but that is not a blanket recommendation for every household glue: Ravensburger’s framing guidance.

Before choosing, consider whether the puzzle must remain reusable, whether the product is intended for paper or cardboard and dries clear, how evenly you can apply it, its stated finish and drying time, and whether the puzzle needs a rigid backing. Do not assume that a product is matte, glossy or clear unless its manufacturer says so.
What Ravensburger says about its puzzle conserver
Ravensburger’s US page describes Puzzle Conserver Permanent as designed for Ravensburger puzzles and supplied with a sponge applicator. The manufacturer says the product seals and preserves a puzzle and can be ready for framing after one hour. It also claims that a 200 ml bottle covers about eight 500-piece puzzles or four 1,000-piece puzzles. Those are product-specific manufacturer claims, not a coverage or drying guarantee for other adhesives, puzzle brands or application amounts: Ravensburger Puzzle Conserver Permanent.

Ravensburger’s UK conserver instructions say to spread the product evenly, avoid puddles because they may not dry transparent, and allow one hour before framing while ideally leaving the puzzle for a full day. They warn that cardboard may swell if the puzzle is too damp during application. Follow the instructions for the exact adhesive you use rather than applying one product’s drying time or method to another: Ravensburger UK Conserver Glue instructions.
How to apply glue without spoiling the puzzle
- Decide whether to glue it. Glue is for keeping the completed puzzle together as a display piece. If you want to preserve the option of disassembly, use a frame that holds it without adhesive.
- Check the adhesive label. Confirm that the product is suitable for the materials and follow its stated amount, application method and drying time. Do not treat “regular glue” as a specific formula.
- Protect a flat work surface. Place the completed puzzle on a protected, level surface before applying adhesive.
- Apply an even coat. Use only the recommended amount and work it into the piece gaps as the product directions specify. Avoid thick areas and puddles, which can remain visible; excess moisture can swell the cardboard.
- Let it dry flat before framing. Keep the puzzle level and allow the adhesive to dry fully according to its label. Do not frame it based on another product’s drying time.
- Add support when needed. Ravensburger advises additional support, such as plywood or sturdy cardboard, for puzzles above 500 pieces. Check that the frame and backing can support the puzzle you are displaying.

What is not established about “regular glue”
The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a controlled, head-to-head performance ranking of puzzle glue against every type of regular glue. Ravensburger’s clear-PVA recommendation is manufacturer advice, not an independent comparative test. For a specific alternative, rely on that product’s own instructions and do not assume that a glue suitable for another task will dry clear, spread evenly or avoid affecting puzzle cardboard.
