The grain line shows the direction of a fabric’s threads or structure. For ordinary straight-grain placement on woven fabric, line up the pattern piece’s grainline arrow parallel to the selvage, then check that the arrow is the same distance from the selvage at both ends. Follow the pattern’s layout instead if it calls for crosswise or bias placement, or specifies a one-way direction.

What the grain line means

Fabric grain is the direction in which its threads or structure run. In woven cloth, the two main directions are the lengthwise grain and the crosswise grain; they meet at right angles. The selvage—the finished edge running along the fabric’s length—follows the lengthwise grain. The crosswise grain runs from one selvage to the other. The Sewing & Craft Alliance guide describes grain as the direction in which the threads run.

Lengthwise grain

The lengthwise grain runs parallel to the selvage. It is generally the stable direction used when a pattern piece is marked for straight-grain placement.

Crosswise grain

The crosswise grain runs across the width of a woven fabric, perpendicular to the selvage. It may have more give than the lengthwise direction.

Bias

True bias is diagonal, at 45 degrees to the lengthwise and crosswise grains. Woven fabric has more give on the bias even when it feels firm in the other directions. Cutting on the bias can produce softer drape, but a bias-cut hem may stretch or waver.

How to align a pattern grainline

A pattern piece’s long arrow is a placement instruction: it tells you which direction on the fabric the piece should follow. For a standard straight-grain layout on woven cloth, the arrow should run parallel to the selvage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Lay out the fabric as directed in the pattern’s cutting layout, with the selvage identified.
  2. Place the pattern piece on the fabric and orient its grainline arrow parallel to the selvage.
  3. Measure from one end of the arrow to the selvage, then measure from the other end to the selvage. Use the same reference point at each end.
  4. Adjust the pattern until the two measurements match, then secure it for cutting.

Equal distances confirm that the arrow is parallel to the selvage; they do not override a pattern’s instructions to cut crosswise, on the bias, or in a particular direction. Threads Magazine’s guide to cutting on grain and Seamwork’s alignment explanation describe this two-point measuring check.

Check that woven fabric is on grain

A fabric can be skewed, so the selvage alone may not show whether the crosswise threads lie straight across the width. If you cannot identify the crossgrain visually, use a thread as a guide:

  1. Make a small snip at one selvage edge.
  2. Find a crosswise thread and gently pull it out. The fabric will pucker along its path.
  3. Use the resulting line as a crosswise guide when straightening or cutting the fabric.

Sew Essential’s fabric-grain instructions describe this pulled-thread method. Use the fold and layout shown in the pattern’s cutting guide rather than assuming every pattern uses the same fold.

Woven fabric, knits, and directional designs

Wovens

Woven fabric is made from lengthwise and crosswise threads. Use the grainline arrow and the pattern layout to decide which direction the piece should follow; do not rotate it simply to save fabric if that changes the specified placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Knits

Knits are constructed differently from wovens and do not have woven warp and weft. The Sewing & Craft Alliance describes lengthwise ribs and crosswise courses, with the greatest stretch across the courses. Follow the pattern’s knit stretch and direction instructions rather than automatically applying woven-fabric assumptions. See the Sewing & Craft Alliance guide.

Nap, prints, and one-way placement

Some fabrics have a directional surface, such as nap, or a print that must face one way. A pattern arrow with heads at both ends can allow either orientation along the lengthwise grain when the fabric has no nap. An arrow with one head may indicate that the piece must point in one direction. These conventions can vary, so treat the pattern’s layout guide as the authority. Pearson’s patternmaking text explains the distinction between two-headed and one-headed grainline arrows.

Which direction should you cut?

Use the pattern’s stated grainline and layout as the starting point. Check the fabric construction, the direction of stretch or drape you need, and any nap or print constraints. Straight grain is the usual instruction for woven pieces, but crosswise and bias placement are intentional when the pattern specifies them. For knits, use the stretch direction the pattern calls for.
