The Nian Beast is a creature in Chinese Spring Festival folklore. In a familiar version of the legend, it comes at the end of the lunar year and is driven away by red, bright light, and loud noises. The story is often used to explain customs such as red decorations and firecrackers, but it is folklore—not evidence that a real beast existed or that the tale definitively began those traditions.

What is the Nian Beast?
Nian (年) is a legendary creature in stories associated with Chinese New Year, known in China as Spring Festival. The Library of Congress recounts a version in which an elderly man frightens Nian by wearing red and setting off firecrackers, whose noise and bright flashes scare it away. The tale is a traditional explanation for some Spring Festival customs, not a documented account of an animal or a proven single origin for those practices.
