What Is the Red Light in a Photographic Darkroom Called?

The red light in a photographic darkroom is a safelight, a filtered lamp intended for specific light-sensitive materials—not a universal safe light for film and paper.

It’s called a safelight. In a photographic darkroom, a safelight gives limited illumination for handling certain light-sensitive materials—but it is safe only for compatible materials and only under the right conditions.

Why a darkroom safelight is often red

Photographic paper can be sensitive to some wavelengths of light and comparatively less sensitive to others. A safelight’s filter and light source are chosen to emit light that a particular material can tolerate for a limited time. Red or reddish-brown light is common when printing with some black-and-white papers; other papers may call for a different filter color.

The word “safelight” does not mean that any red lamp is harmless. Eastman Kodak’s guide explains that a filter’s apparent color does not fully reveal which wavelengths it transmits. A colored bulb chosen by appearance alone may expose and fog photographic material. A proper setup uses a suitable fixture, filter, and bulb, placed as directed for the material being handled.

When a red light is not safe

Film and color materials

Red light is not suitable for every darkroom task. Kodak’s 2006 guide, How Safe Is Your Safelight? A Guide to Darkroom Illumination (Publication K-4), says that color films and papers, color print and transparency materials, most panchromatic black-and-white films, and high-speed infrared films require total darkness. For those materials, turn the safelight off and use the prescribed lightproof equipment.

Printing paper versus film

A print darkroom may use a safelight for compatible photographic paper, but film generally must be loaded and developed in complete darkness. The Finnish Museum of Photography glossary notes that modern films are sensitive across wavelengths; a lightproof developing tank lets film be processed after the tank is closed.

How to use a safelight without fogging prints

  • Check the material’s instructions. Confirm the permitted filter color, bulb wattage, and minimum distance for the specific paper or film.
  • Keep exposure brief. Even materials recommended for safelight use can have some sensitivity to the light. Kodak states, “No safelight provides completely safe exposure for an indefinite period of time.”
  • Use the specified fixture and filter. Don’t substitute an ordinary red bulb or assume that a lamp is suitable because it looks red.
  • Test the setup regularly. Replace a faded filter and check for safelight fogging; Kodak cautions that unsuitable conditions can reduce image quality before fogging is obvious.
  • Work in total darkness when required. Switch off the safelight for materials whose instructions require darkness.
