For an exposed wood deck that needs an opaque, even color, choose a solid-color exterior deck stain specifically labeled for horizontal wood. It is formulated for weather and foot traffic while hiding most of the grain. A porch-and-floor paint can work on some covered or previously painted decks, but only when that exact product label approves the surface, exposure, primer, and preparation. No available manufacturer evidence proves one brand or coating will last longest on every deck.

Start with the coating class, not the color
Deck products sold as stain and paint are not interchangeable. A transparent or semi-transparent stain leaves substantial grain visible. A solid-color stain uses more pigment, masks the grain while retaining some wood texture, and is the most direct match for an opaque finish on exterior horizontal boards. Porch-and-floor paint forms a more paint-like film and may be appropriate on a sound, previously painted surface or a covered porch, but its label must specifically address wood, exterior exposure, and the condition of your deck.
Horizontal decking is harder on a coating than vertical siding. Boards receive standing water, ultraviolet exposure, tracked-in grit, furniture movement, and repeated wet-dry cycles. The most useful label language is therefore “exterior horizontal wood,” not merely “exterior paint.”
Which finish fits your deck?
Solid-color exterior deck stain: the default for opaque outdoor wood
Use this category when the deck is exposed to weather and you want a uniform color without completely losing the board texture. Sherwin-Williams describes its SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne Solid Color Deck Stain as durable, opaque protection for properly prepared exterior horizontal wood, including decks. Its March 2025 data sheet identifies a 100% acrylic resin, coverage of 200–400 square feet per gallon, and two coats recommended for maximum durability. Actual coverage changes with wood porosity, texture, application method, and previous coating.

Benjamin Moore Woodluxe Water-Based Deck + Siding Exterior Stain Solid 694 is another example of this class. Its technical sheet says the solid stain masks grain without obscuring texture and can self-prime on most properly prepared substrates, including previously stained surfaces. Bleeding or tannin-rich woods such as cedar and redwood require primer according to that sheet.
Porch-and-floor paint: a conditional choice
A porch-and-floor coating may be suitable when the label allows exterior wood and the deck is structurally sound, clean, and compatible with the existing finish. Rust-Oleum Low VOC Porch & Floor Satin is described for interior or exterior wood and concrete and is urethane-fortified acrylic. Its instructions call for removing loose material, cleaning and rinsing, and allowing the surface to dry; new wood should age for six months under those instructions.

BEHR Premium Porch & Patio Floor Paint requires wood preparation and a stain-blocking primer, followed by two coats for optimal coverage and durability. Its sheet gives 72 hours before normal use. That is a different system from a self-priming solid stain, so do not substitute one product’s preparation or cure schedule for another’s.
One-coat stain or resurfacer: only when the deck condition matches
“One coat” describes the advertised application count, not a shortcut around cleaning, weathering, or testing. Rust-Oleum/Wolman DuraStain One Coat Solid Color Stain is a water-based exterior wood stain that the manufacturer describes as mildew resistant and water repellent. Its instructions require at least six months of weathering for new and sealed decks, recommend stripping weathered prior coatings, and call for a splash test. It states that the product is ready for use in 48 hours.
Rust-Oleum RockSolid 2X Solid Stain is positioned for lightly worn decks and patios. The manufacturer lists coverage up to 250 square feet per gallon and furniture return after 48 hours, but requires RockSolid Deck & Patio Cleaner and Deck Start Wood Primer. New or sealed wood must weather for six months under its instructions. Use this type only when the surface condition and the complete label both fit.
Composite decking requires separate approval
Do not assume a wood-deck coating belongs on composite boards. Benjamin Moore cautions that some composite decking cannot be coated and advises checking with the composite manufacturer. Its sheet also says not to use a composite-deck color darker than the original or with a light reflectance value below 57. Those limits are product guidance, not a universal rule for every composite brand.
Comparison of the main options
| Coating or example | Best fit | Opacity and preparation | Published application or return-to-use information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid-color exterior deck stain, such as SuperDeck | Exposed, properly prepared exterior horizontal wood when you want an opaque color | Complete grain coverage; preparation and substrate testing required | 200–400 sq. ft. per gallon; two coats recommended for maximum durability; ideal surface temperature 50–90°F; no rain or snow expected within 24 hours |
| Woodluxe Water-Based Deck + Siding Exterior Stain Solid 694 | Exterior wood, including many previously stained surfaces, when texture should remain visible | Self-primes most properly prepared substrates; primer required for bleeding or tannin-rich cedar and redwood | Two-coat guidance is described in the technical material; follow the current sheet for conditions |
| Wolman DuraStain One Coat Solid Color Stain | Exterior wood that has met the product’s weathering and water-absorption requirements | Strip weathered coatings when directed, clean, and perform the splash test | One coat; ready for use in 48 hours; new and sealed decks require at least six months of weathering under its instructions |
| RockSolid 2X Solid Stain | Lightly worn decks and patios that can accept its cleaner-and-primer system | RockSolid Deck & Patio Cleaner plus Deck Start Wood Primer required | Up to 250 sq. ft. per gallon; furniture after 48 hours; six months’ weathering for new or sealed wood |
| Low VOC Porch & Floor Satin | Interior or exterior wood or concrete where the label and exposure fit, including some covered decks | Remove loose material, clean, rinse, and dry; new wood ages six months under the instructions | Light foot traffic after at least 24 hours; furniture after 72 hours |
| BEHR Premium Porch & Patio Floor Paint | Wood surfaces that meet the product’s substrate and exposure requirements | Wood preparation plus stain-blocking primer; two coats for optimal coverage and durability | 72 hours before normal use; painted surfaces can remain hot even where temperature reduction varies |
These figures come from manufacturer materials and are not a head-to-head durability test. Formulations and labels can differ by country, product tint base, and package revision.

How to decide in five questions
- Is the deck exposed and horizontal? If yes, begin with products explicitly labeled for exterior horizontal wood.
- Do you want grain visible? Choose a transparent or semi-transparent stain for a natural look; choose a solid stain when you want a uniform, opaque color. A solid stain still shows some texture, whereas a floor paint usually looks more like a painted film.
- What is already on the boards? Peeling, chalking, incompatible, or unknown coatings increase preparation work. A sound, compatible prior stain may be eligible for a self-priming solid stain, while a floor paint may require primer.
- Is the lumber new, pressure-treated, or sealed? Follow the exact weathering interval. The products in the manufacturer guidance range from four to six weeks to six months, so there is no universal waiting period.
- Can the surface pass the product’s water test? If water beads or puddles on bare wood, a barrier remains and more preparation is needed for products that require absorption.
Preparation determines whether the coating bonds
Rust-Oleum’s Porch & Floor instructions state that “proper surface preparation is critical to performance.” That principle applies across coating classes, although the exact cleaner, stripper, primer, and sanding instructions differ.

1. Identify the substrate and existing finish
Confirm whether the deck is solid wood, pressure-treated wood, or composite. Note the species when known; cedar and redwood can bleed tannins. Determine whether the current finish is bare wood, stain, paint, sealer, or an unknown mixture. Replace boards with structural damage before coating; paint cannot repair rot or movement.
2. Remove failing material
Scrape or strip loose and peeling finish as the selected label directs. Feather sharp edges and sand loose fibers where specified. Do not assume that a “one coat” product can encapsulate flaking paint. Sound older coating may remain only when the new product’s instructions permit it and the surfaces are compatible.
3. Clean contaminants
Remove dirt, mildew, algae, grease, and embedded residue with a cleaner intended for the wood and coating. Rinse thoroughly and allow the boards to dry. RockSolid specifically requires its Deck & Patio Cleaner before its primer. Using an unapproved aggressive cleaner can damage wood or leave residues that interfere with adhesion.
4. Test readiness on bare wood
Use the test required by the product. Wolman says water should absorb rapidly; beading or puddling indicates that a barrier remains and additional preparation is needed. Dunn-Edwards STAINSEAL Exterior Solid-Color Deck, Fence & Siding Stain gives a similar droplet test: if water beads, prepare the surface; if it soaks in, the surface is ready to stain.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
The waiting periods differ. Dunn-Edwards recommends that new or treated wood weather four to six weeks before testing again, while Wolman and RockSolid specify six months for new or sealed decks in the cited instructions. These are product-specific directions, not competing universal standards.
5. Prime where required
Use the primer named on the label. RockSolid requires Deck Start Wood Primer. BEHR’s floor-paint sheet calls for a stain-blocking primer on wood. Woodluxe requires primer for bleeding or tannin-rich cedar and redwood. Skipping a specified primer can allow discoloration or premature failure even when the topcoat itself is suitable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apply within the product’s weather window
Read the current technical data sheet immediately before application. Check air and surface temperature, shade, humidity, wind, and the rain forecast. The March 2025 SuperDeck sheet specifies an ideal surface temperature of 50–90°F and says not to apply when rain or snow is expected within 24 hours. Cooler conditions can extend drying. Other products may set different limits.
- Mask adjacent siding, masonry, plants, and hardware. Protect areas that could be stained by spray, roller, or brush application.
- Stir thoroughly and maintain a wet edge so lap marks do not dry between sections. Work board lengths consistently and avoid stopping in the middle of a visible run when possible.
- Apply the labeled coat count. SuperDeck recommends two coats for maximum durability; BEHR recommends two coats for optimal coverage and durability. Do not infer that a one-coat claim eliminates primer or cleaning.
- Allow the stated drying and curing time before foot traffic, washing, rugs, or furniture. Rust-Oleum Porch & Floor allows light foot traffic after at least 24 hours and furniture after 72 hours. Wolman and RockSolid state 48 hours for their cited return-to-use or furniture guidance.
- Inspect after the first coat for holidays, exposed fibers, lap marks, or tannin bleed. Apply the next coat only within the recoat interval and weather conditions specified by that product.
Common failure modes and fixes
Peeling within months
Likely causes include coating over loose material, trapped moisture, contamination, or applying outside the temperature and drying window. Remove failed areas, correct the moisture or cleaning problem, and follow the selected product’s recoat system rather than simply adding another layer.
Water beads instead of soaking into bare boards
Wax, sealer, old stain, or other film may still be present. Continue preparation only as far as the label directs; repeat the water test before coating. Do not apply an absorption-dependent stain over a surface that fails its readiness test.

Uneven color or lap marks
Porous boards absorb differently, especially after spot repairs. Keep a wet edge, maintain a consistent application pattern, and apply the complete number of coats. Excessive spread rate can also make a product look thin; use the published coverage as a planning range, not a guarantee.
Brown or reddish bleed-through
Tannin-rich cedar and redwood can discolor a light finish. Use the stain-blocking or specialty primer required by the chosen product before applying the topcoat.
Soft or sticky coating after the stated time
Cool temperatures, high humidity, shade, heavy application, or poor ventilation can lengthen drying. Keep traffic and furniture off the surface, verify the weather conditions, and consult the product manufacturer if the coating remains uncured beyond its instructions.

Color and sun exposure affect surface temperature. Sherwin-Williams claims its SuperDeck Cool Feel color technology can reduce surface temperature by up to 20°F versus conventional color technology; this is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently verified result for every deck, color, or weather condition. BEHR notes that temperature reduction varies and that painted surfaces may remain hot.
How much material should you buy?
Measure the actual paintable surface, including steps and vertical risers if they will receive the same coating. Divide by the product’s stated coverage and account for the required number of coats. SuperDeck lists 200–400 square feet per gallon, while RockSolid lists up to 250 square feet per gallon. Rough, weathered, or thirsty wood generally uses more material than smooth, previously coated boards. Buy from the same tint base and product batch when possible, and keep a small labeled remainder for future repairs.
Maintenance after the deck is coated
Keep leaves, soil, and standing water from remaining on the boards. Clean according to the coating label rather than using a harsh solvent or pressure setting that can erode the film. Watch high-traffic paths, stair nosings, board ends, and areas beneath planters or furniture first. When touch-ups no longer blend, clean and prepare the entire affected section; coating over isolated failure without addressing its cause usually produces visible patches.
No authoritative independent comparison in the available manufacturer material establishes a universal service-life winner. Longevity depends on exposure, drainage, wood movement, preparation, color, application thickness, and maintenance. Treat every coverage, temperature, weathering, coat-count, and cure figure above as specific to the named product and its cited instructions.
Bottom line for choosing your deck coating
For an exposed wood deck and an opaque, uniform appearance, compare solid-color exterior deck stains labeled for horizontal wood first. Select a porch-and-floor paint only when its label explicitly fits your deck’s material, exposure, existing finish, primer needs, and return-to-use schedule. The winning product is the one whose preparation and environmental requirements you can meet completely—not the one with the shortest advertised application claim.
