The Arles Amphitheatre is worth visiting for more than its Roman scale: it is an ancient arena whose medieval conversion into a fortified town is still part of the structure you see today. Its arches and circulation spaces sit within Arles’s historic city, making it an unusually clear example of a Roman monument adapted across centuries rather than preserved as an isolated ruin.
Why the Arles Amphitheatre stands out
Arles’s appeal lies in the combination of monumental architecture, later reuse and an urban setting. The arena was built in the late first century CE and remains one of the oldest Roman elements in a city whose ancient fabric was adapted through medieval and later periods. UNESCO includes it in the World Heritage property “Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments”, inscribed in 1981 alongside a notable group of Roman and Romanesque monuments.
UNESCO identifies the amphitheatre, Roman theatre and cryptoporticus among the property’s oldest Roman elements. The amphitheatre makes the site’s long history especially tangible: it was not simply left behind as the city changed, but occupied and reshaped for new purposes.

How large is the Roman arena?
The City of Arles municipal heritage service gives the amphitheatre’s principal dimensions as 136 metres by 107 metres and estimates that its original seating could accommodate about 21,000 spectators. That figure is an estimate of ancient capacity, not the number of people the monument can accommodate today.

The building has an elliptical plan, two levels of sixty arches, and a circulation system of doors, galleries and stairways. These features show how the structure organized movement as well as spectacle: crowds could enter and circulate through the monument rather than relying on a single access point. The City of Arles heritage service ranks it twentieth among Roman-world amphitheatres; that is the municipal service’s ranking, not an independently established current comparison.
What happened to it in the Middle Ages?
In the 11th and 12th centuries, the amphitheatre was turned into a fortress. UNESCO’s account places that change within a larger pattern of medieval adaptation in Arles, noting: “The amphitheatre was turned into a fortress, while the baths of Constantine were converted into a count’s palace.”

The City of Arles heritage service describes a small fortified town inside the arena, with streets, a square, churches and four towers. This was a substantial change in the building’s role: spaces designed for spectators and public events became part of a lived-in defensive settlement. The layers are a reason to look closely at the monument, not just to admire its arches from a distance.

Medieval reuse helped preserve Arles’s Roman monuments, according to UNESCO. The City of Arles heritage service records that restrictions on repairing houses inside the amphitheatre began in 1735, and that clearance and restoration work started in 1822. Its account reports that nearly 430,000 francs-or were spent on amphitheatre works; this is a historical expenditure figure, not a modern-value estimate.

Nineteenth-century work cleared the built settlement and restored parts of the Roman structure. The amphitheatre subsequently returned in part to its earlier public-spectacle role. That sequence—arena, fortified settlement, restored monument and venue—is still legible in its surviving fabric and continuing public use.

How the amphitheatre fits into a visit to Arles
The amphitheatre is a strong starting point for understanding Arles’s Roman and medieval history, but UNESCO’s designation covers an ensemble, not just this one building. The nearby Roman theatre and cryptoporticus are among the property’s oldest Roman elements, while the full World Heritage property also reflects the city’s adaptation to medieval European civilization.
Allow time to notice how the arena’s scale, entrances and galleries work together, then consider the evidence of its later occupation. The monument’s appeal comes from seeing those histories coexist: its Roman form is still prominent, but its medieval life and later restoration are part of what survives.
