What a thermostatic mixing valve does
A thermostatic mixing valve blends hot and cold supplies to deliver water at a controlled outlet temperature. Inside the valve, a thermostatic element reacts to temperature changes. If the hot supply becomes hotter or the cold supply pressure changes, the element adjusts the mix so the outlet remains within the set range, subject to the valve’s operating limits and correct installation.
In a healthcare hand-wash station, this serves two separate purposes:
- Scald protection: water can be delivered warm enough for effective hand washing without exposing users to unnecessarily high temperatures.
- Operational consistency: staff encounter a predictable temperature at each basin, rather than adjusting a manual tap repeatedly.
A TMV does not disinfect hands, sterilise the basin or replace cleaning, hand-rub, soap, water-quality management and staff compliance. Its contribution is control of the water outlet and, in some designs, support for flushing and maintenance routines.

Which Enware fitting is identified?
The named product is the eSQX touch-free wall mixer. Enware’s product description says the mixer uses sensor activation, allows the temperature to be set during installation and is compatible with Type A and Type B wash basins. The final safe setting still depends on the hydraulic design, supply temperatures, measured flow, isolation arrangements and the healthcare facility’s own policies.
The eSQX description also identifies a 12-hour flush cycle intended to expel stagnant water. That is a design feature, not evidence that a particular Modbury room achieved a specific microbiological result.
How the touch-free operation can support hygiene
A sensor starts water flow when hands are detected, so the user does not need to grasp or turn a handle. This can reduce contact with the tap surface between hand washing and leaving the basin. The benefit is procedural: fewer touch points may make the intended sequence easier to follow and may reduce recontamination of clean hands from a recently handled control.
Touch-free activation does not guarantee good hand hygiene. A user can still wash for too little time, omit soap, touch the basin or surrounding surfaces, or leave without drying properly. Sensor range, activation delay, battery or power supply, cleaning practices and fault alarms also affect day-to-day performance. A hospital must validate those factors during commissioning and routine checks.

How the 12-hour flush cycle is intended to work

- Standby period: if the basin is not used, water remains in the local section of the system.
- Scheduled flush: after the stated interval, the fitting opens for its programmed flush to discharge standing water.
- Verification: facilities staff should confirm that the cycle actually occurs, that the discharge is directed safely, and that drains and splash control can handle it.
The description does not state the flush duration, volume, triggering conditions, water temperature or whether the cycle can be changed for a particular hospital. Those parameters must be obtained from the current installation and service documentation. A scheduled flush also cannot correct a wider design problem such as dead legs, unsuitable pipe sizing, inadequate hot-water temperature management or a contaminated upstream supply.

- initial and post-maintenance temperature measurements at the outlet;
- the programmed flush interval, duration and discharge volume;
- records showing compliance with applicable Australian plumbing, water-quality and healthcare requirements;
- cleaning, descaling, filter replacement and thermostatic-cartridge maintenance instructions;
- fault, isolation and emergency-shutoff procedures; and
- commissioning sign-off by the responsible hydraulic contractor and facility representative.
These documents determine whether the installed system matches the product description. They also provide the audit trail needed when a basin is reported as too hot, too cold, slow to activate or repeatedly blocked.

Do not confuse the project fitting with other Aquablend products
Architecture & Design also lists Enware’s Aquablend TMV family, but that family reference does not establish that an Aquablend model was installed at Modbury. Two historical product items illustrate why model names and dates matter.

Neither item should be presented as a substitute for the named eSQX mixer or as proof of performance at Modbury. Different valve bodies, cartridges, flow rates and control logic can produce materially different maintenance and commissioning requirements.
How to assess a TMV installation for infection-control work
1. Start with the water-system design
Map hot and cold branches, outlet temperatures, pipe lengths, dead legs, pressure conditions and drain capacity. A touch-free fitting cannot compensate for poor upstream design.

Check that the model is approved and configured for the basin type and clinical setting. The eSQX description specifically refers to Type A and Type B basins and to clinical, procedural and surgical hand-wash applications; the project schedule should show which configuration applies at each location.
3. Commission temperature and activation
Measure the outlet with calibrated equipment, verify sensor detection and timing, and test operation at realistic supply pressures. Record the set point and acceptance limits rather than relying on a nominal factory value.

4. Test the flush cycle
Observe at least one scheduled cycle, measure the discharge where required by the facility’s procedure and confirm that the drain, splashback protection and nearby users are safe. Document what happens after a power interruption or sensor fault.
5. Build maintenance into infection-prevention procedures
Assign responsibility for cleaning the sensor window, checking strainers, inspecting thermostatic components, testing temperatures and responding to alarms. Include the fitting in the hospital’s water-safety plan and hand-hygiene audits.
6. Measure outcomes separately from engineering performance
Track hand-hygiene compliance, basin downtime, temperature complaints, maintenance events and relevant infection indicators using defined dates and denominators. Compare like-for-like clinical areas and account for other interventions, staffing changes and construction disruption.
What would prove an improvement at Modbury?
A credible outcome claim would need more than confirmation that the mixers were installed. Useful evidence would include a project-owner or hospital release identifying installation dates and locations, commissioning records showing the valves met their specifications, and infection-control data collected before and after the change.
The outcome analysis should state which infections were counted, how cases were defined, the observation period, patient-days or other denominator, and whether a comparison ward or historical control was used. Hand-hygiene observations and water-system microbiology could help explain a result, but each measures a different pathway and should not be treated as interchangeable.
