Nightshade is a free image-poisoning application from the University of Chicago’s SAND Lab. It alters an image so that, if it is later used in an AI model’s training data, the model may learn a false association between the depicted subject and its text label. It is not a watermark, a copyright registration system, or a way to stop an image from being copied. Its strongest published evidence is for targeted attacks on Stable Diffusion SDXL, not universal protection across generative AI.
How Nightshade is meant to work
Image generators learn relationships between images and the captions or prompts paired with them. Nightshade applies optimized, usually subtle changes to an image intended to interfere with that learning. If a training pipeline includes the altered image and its associated text, the model may learn the wrong relationship—for example, connecting images labeled “car” with the concept “cow.”
The goal is to raise the cost of scraping and training on artists’ work without consent. The effect depends on an altered image being included in a model’s training process; Nightshade does not reach into an existing model, block an image download, or directly change a model already deployed.

Does Nightshade really work?
There is peer-reviewed experimental evidence that it can work under specific conditions. The Nightshade paper reports that fewer than 100 optimized, poisoned training samples could completely control the output of a prompt in the tested version of Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL). It also describes a “car” to “cow” attack with a high probability of success using 50 optimized samples in that test setting.
Those results are not a guarantee for every model or training pipeline. The paper explains that a particular concept may be represented by far fewer images than the billions used to train a large diffusion model, giving targeted poisoning an opportunity to have an effect. It also reports that effects can spill over into semantically related concepts, so an attack aimed at one subject may affect nearby concepts too.

The project says Nightshade is most effective against Stable Diffusion models. Effects may transfer to other diffusion models, but the precise target can differ, the effect may be weaker, and more altered images may be needed. Preprocessing or other changes in a training pipeline can also affect results. Treat Nightshade as one possible deterrent, not a promise that a particular image or style will be protected.
How to use Nightshade on an image
The project’s official site lists Nightshade 1.1 builds for macOS and Windows. Its download page distinguishes Apple Silicon and Windows GPU and CPU options. The instructions below stay at the level the project documents; they do not assume a particular control label or interface layout.

- Choose the build for your computer. Use the official Nightshade download page to select the macOS or Windows option that matches your hardware. Check the current installation and privacy documentation before installing.
- Allow for first-run downloads. The user guide says the initial run downloads machine-learning libraries and pretrained models. The initial resources require about 4 GB of storage; an existing Glaze installation can reuse resource files.
- Work from a copy of the image. Nightshade is image-specific and randomized: running the same source image again can produce a different output. Keep the original so you can compare versions and choose which one, if any, to publish.
- Choose an intensity and inspect the result. Higher intensity generally strengthens the intended poisoning effect, but it also increases the chance that the image will visibly change. Review the output at normal viewing size and close up before posting; do not assume a change is imperceptible.
- Publish the processed image if you choose to use it. The intended effect concerns future training that uses the altered file. Nightshade does not make the unprocessed original safe if that original is also publicly available.
Hardware, time, and current builds
Nightshade can run in CPU mode, but the guide warns that it may be dramatically slower than GPU processing. Its example is a job expected to take about 20 minutes taking 5 hours in CPU mode; that is an illustration from the guide, not a timing guarantee for every computer or image.
- GPU: The guide says Nightshade and Glaze require significant GPU memory and recommends the NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit and official NVIDIA drivers for compatible GPUs. The materials do not establish a single minimum VRAM figure that applies to every supported system.
- CPU: CPU mode is available, but expect substantially longer processing times.
- Storage: Budget about 4 GB for initial resources, or less additional space if an existing Glaze installation lets the applications reuse those files.
- Software update: The official site lists version 1.1 for macOS and Windows and notes an April 2026 update that fixed a “TRUE” bug and included a driver update. Check the download page for the latest build and platform-specific instructions.

Artists can use the tools for different aims: Nightshade is intended to interfere with training associations, while Glaze is intended to frustrate style imitation. Neither should be mistaken for a legal remedy or a guarantee that work will not be copied or used in training.

What Nightshade does not protect against
- It does not prevent scraping or copying. A person or system can still download or redistribute an image; Nightshade is intended to affect model training if a processed image is used there.
- It does not remove an image from a dataset. It changes the file that an artist processes. It cannot ensure that a training pipeline includes that version rather than an original, a crop, or another copy.
- It is not universal across models. The project identifies Stable Diffusion as its strongest target and does not promise equal results across other models or their processing pipelines.
- It is not a watermark or proof of ownership. It does not register copyright, identify the artist to viewers, or establish who owns an image.
Privacy and adoption
The project says the standalone tool is designed to run without a network connection and does not send artists’ images back to the lab. The first run does download libraries and pretrained models, so review the current download and privacy documentation before installation rather than assuming every part of setup is offline.
The University of Chicago Glaze Project’s mission page reports more than 2.5 million Nightshade downloads since January 2024 and more than 8.5 million Glaze downloads since March 2023. Those figures indicate substantial use, but download counts do not measure how many images reached training datasets or prove that the tool works against every model.
