The bedroom French doors now fit the 45.75-inch opening after being cut down, but the project is not finished: ball catches still need to be installed, the ordered pulls had not arrived, and the doors had not yet proved they would remain closed. The closet color was also undecided. Glidden Sweet Angel was the frontrunner because it looked like a lighter, pink-leaning coral, but the paint had not been applied. The useful decision is therefore not a claimed final color; it is a way to judge each coral against the bedroom rug, the foyer sightline and the room’s actual light.

Where the French-door project stands
I started with an opening that measured 45.75 inches wide. I wanted a pair of interior French doors without reframing that opening, so I chose two doors listed at 24 inches each. Their nominal combined width was 48 inches, leaving 2.25 inches more material than the opening could accept. Once the pair was installed, the doors overlapped and would not close, so simply hanging them was not enough.

Rather than rebuild the opening, I cut the doors down and reinstalled them. The cutting solved the immediate fit problem: the leaves could meet inside the existing frame. The project took longer than expected, including an attempt to reinstall one door upside down before correcting it. That kind of interruption matters in a paired-door installation because handing, hinge placement and the direction of the stiles all affect how the two leaves meet.

Fit is not the same as finished operation
After trimming and rehanging, the doors fit the opening, but they did not stay closed. Ball catches had not yet been installed, so there was no completed mechanism holding the leaves in place. The pulls I had ordered had also not arrived. At this stage the accurate description is “cut and fitted,” not “fully functional.” A final check still has to include the catches, pulls, alignment and the way the doors behave after the hardware is attached.

What I was trying to solve with the closet color
The closet is visible from the bedroom and from the foyer, so its color cannot be judged in isolation. I wanted a coral with a noticeable pink component rather than a true orange. The bedroom rug was the fixed reference: its red undertone made some of the more orange samples look discordant when viewed with the room.
Many chips that appeared promising under Home Depot’s fluorescent lighting looked too yellow or too much like burnt orange after I brought the comparison home. That is my project experience, not a controlled lighting test, but it changed the selection criteria. A color that looks lively and coral in a store can shift toward yellow, orange or brown when it is seen beside the rug and under the room’s daylight and evening light.

The four colors on the shortlist

The comparison is easiest to understand on four axes: whether the color leans pink or orange, how light it appears beside the rug, how strongly saturated it is, and whether it works when the adjoining bedroom is visible. A sample can succeed on one axis and fail on another. For example, Watermelon Punch met the pink preference but still seemed potentially too saturated, while Coral Serenade offered depth but risked feeling too dark.
Why the store chips were not enough
Color chips are small, surrounded by white and viewed under a particular light source. The closet will present a much larger field of color, with shadows at the sides and changes in light over the day. The rug adds another variable: its red undertone can make an adjacent orange-leaning coral appear more yellow or more brown than it did on the store display.
Screen images add another layer of uncertainty. The photograph of Sweet Angel did not communicate as much of its pink and brightness as the physical strip did to me. Dutch Boy likewise cautions that on-screen color representations can differ from actual paint. The practical consequence is simple: a web image can help narrow a list, but it should not be the final evidence for buying enough paint for a large cabinet or closet surface.

A room-based way to choose the coral
The most reliable next step is to compare real samples in the conditions where the decision will be lived with. This combines what happened with the rug and the lighting with the sample formats recommended by paint makers.

Place each candidate beside the bedroom rug, not on a separate wall or in a different room. Also look from the foyer so the sample is judged along the same sightline as the finished closet.
- Use physical color evidence. Benjamin Moore identifies display chips, brush-on samples and peel-and-stick paint samples as ways to evaluate a bedroom color. A peel-and-stick sample can be moved; a brush-on sample shows how the actual coating reads on the closet material.
- Check more than one light period. Look at the samples in daylight and again with the room’s evening lighting. The store’s fluorescent environment already showed how strongly the apparent hue can change, so one viewing is not enough.
- Judge pink-to-orange balance first. Eliminate samples that turn yellow, burnt orange or brown beside the rug, even if they looked attractive on the strip.
- Then judge depth and intensity. Compare whether Sweet Angel is light enough, whether Coral Serenade is too dark, and whether Watermelon Punch is too saturated for the closet’s size. These are distinct questions; solving hue does not automatically solve lightness or saturation.
- Test the actual surface before a full purchase. A sample on the same type of prepared surface reveals sheen, coverage and how the color interacts with the closet’s edges. It is a check, not a guarantee that the entire finished area will look identical.
Sherwin-Williams advises considering room size, natural light, desired mood and existing decor when selecting a bedroom color, and provides a color visualizer for preliminary comparisons. Those tools can help organize the shortlist, while physical samples beside the rug provide the project-specific check the screen cannot supply.
If the closet is painted, prepare it like a wood project
The color decision should remain separate from the preparation sequence. Sherwin-Williams’ closet-door example uses Dishy Coral SW6598 in Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Paint with a satin finish. That is manufacturer project guidance, not the product choice documented for this closet. Its preparation sequence is a useful model for a later painting day:

- Clean the wood. Remove dust, grime and residue so the next coatings can bond to a sound surface.
- Sand the existing surface. Sanding reduces roughness and helps primer and paint form an even film. Remove sanding dust before coating.
- Prime. Use a primer appropriate to the existing surface and the paint system selected. Product labels control compatibility and drying times.
- Fill seams and holes. Apply filler where joints, nail holes or other defects would remain visible through the finish.
- Sand repaired areas. Once the filler is dry, smooth those spots and remove the dust again. A repair that feels raised before painting will usually remain visible afterward.
- Apply the finish coats. The cited Sherwin-Williams example recommends two coats and uses satin sheen. Follow the chosen product’s recoat and curing directions rather than assuming that another paint behaves identically.
Dutch Boy’s closet-makeover instructions identify an angled brush, mini roller, painter’s tape and a drop cloth as useful equipment. Those tools support neat edges and manageable coverage, but they do not replace surface preparation or the product’s instructions.

The hardware is the next functional milestone. Once the ball catches and pulls are available, I can evaluate the pair as a working set rather than as two trimmed panels.
- Install the ball catches according to the hardware instructions and verify that both leaves engage without forcing them.
- Fit the pulls and check that the locations allow a comfortable grip without interfering with the meeting edges.
- Close the doors repeatedly, watching for renewed overlap, rubbing or a gap that changes from top to bottom.
- Confirm that the catches hold the doors closed and release them without excessive force.
- Only after those checks should the door status be described as complete.
Because one door was temporarily reinstalled upside down during the work, a deliberate final inspection is worthwhile. The goal is not merely that the pair occupies the opening; both leaves should be oriented correctly, meet cleanly and operate with the hardware that was still missing at the time of the update.

How to read the decision at this stage
Sweet Angel was the leading candidate, not a confirmed result. Its advantage was relative: it appeared lighter than Coral Serenade and pinker and brighter in person than the photograph implied. Coral Serenade remained the darker alternative, while Watermelon Punch best matched the desire for pink but carried a saturation risk. Indian Sunset stayed behind Watermelon Punch because it was not the preferred hue.
The closet should therefore remain unpainted until the samples have been seen beside the rug and through the bedroom-to-foyer view. That pause protects the project from two different mistakes: choosing a coral that shifts too orange in the real light, or choosing a pink coral whose saturation overwhelms the small closet area. The doors and the paint can progress independently; fitting the doors does not require pretending the color decision is settled.
