This update follows three connected jobs: removing a dining table’s existing finish, testing the dining room in a measured mockup, and reorganizing a storage room around real access needs. Together, they show how appearance decisions depend on material and history, while layout decisions depend on dimensions and clearance.

One update, three practical problems
The dining table, dining-room mockup, and storage-room work are not isolated decorating exercises. They address three different kinds of fit. The table must accept a treatment that is compatible with its wood and condition. The mockup must show whether furniture works in the room without blocking movement. The storage plan must hold the actual containers and objects while leaving enough space to remove them.

That sequence matters. A beautiful table finish cannot compensate for chairs that cannot be pulled out. A convincing 3D room image is not useful if it was built from guessed dimensions. Shelves that look spacious on a plan can fail when a bin’s rim or handle catches on the opening. The strongest progress report therefore records decisions in the order they were made, with measurements and photographs attached to each stage.
What is established about this project
- The update includes a stripped dining table, a dining-room mockup, and ongoing storage-room work.
- The public context supports caution about stripping original furniture finishes, careful workspace preparation, measured room planning, and storage clearances.
- The project record available for publication does not establish the table’s material, the products used, the room or storage dimensions, the budget, or the final outcome.
That last point is not a reason to fill the gaps with assumptions. It is a reason to label the update as progress and show readers exactly which decisions still depend on project evidence.
Why strip a dining table at all?
Stripping is a major intervention, not an automatic first step. The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that removing an original finish is irreversible and generally is not recommended for historically valuable furniture because the finish contributes to the object’s history and cannot simply be put back. Before celebrating a stripped surface, the homeowner should establish the table’s age, provenance, construction, and condition.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s furniture-restoration code of practice likewise notes that some furniture can be restored without stripping. Cleaning, stabilizing, or working with the existing finish may meet the restoration goal when the surface is sound. Stripping becomes a candidate only after the condition and desired result have been defined.

Questions the table record should answer
- Is the top solid wood, veneer, composite, or a combination?
- What finish was present, and was it original or a later refinish?
- Was the problem peeling, discoloration, water damage, incompatible touch-up, or simply a change in taste?
- Was the table historically or financially significant enough to justify conservation advice before alteration?
- What appearance, maintenance level, and durability does the new finish need to provide?
Without those answers, “the best finish” has no universal answer. The right choice depends on compatibility with the existing wood and the household’s intended use. A finish selected for visual warmth may demand a different maintenance routine from one chosen for maximum resistance to everyday dining wear. The project should record the actual product and sheen once the decision is made; neither is established in the current account.
How a responsible stripping plan is organized
A current This Old House guide describes assessing the table, preparing a well-ventilated workspace, and stripping and sanding when the condition calls for it. The guide lists protective equipment, an orbital sander, and sandpaper among possible supplies and tools. That makes a random orbital sander a plausible planning query, but it does not prove that this homeowner used one. The project’s photographs, receipts, or interview must establish the actual tools.
Separate general guidance from the home’s actual process
- Document the starting surface. Photograph the tabletop, edges, apron, legs, joints, stains, repairs, and any maker’s marks before work begins. Record whether the finish is glossy, cloudy, cracked, lifting, or worn through.
- Confirm the material and goal. Identify solid wood versus veneer and write down whether the goal is repair, a color change, easier maintenance, or a complete appearance reset.
- Prepare the workspace. Use the ventilation, containment, lighting, and protective equipment required by the product label and local rules. Keep dust and chemical work away from occupied living areas where practical.
- Follow the selected product’s label. Dwell time, application method, scraping, cleanup, and disposal vary by chemistry. Do not transfer instructions from one stripper to another.
- Sand only as the documented process requires. Record abrasive grades, equipment, and whether veneer or delicate edges required hand work. A machine named in a general guide is not evidence of use on this table.
- Inspect before finishing. Check for remaining coating, exposed repairs, uneven color, dents, and thin veneer. Photograph the surface before the new finish is applied.
John Dee, a contractor whose work has appeared on This Old House, gives a specific application warning: “The more you brush it, the more you interfere with its ability to strip.” That advice concerns how stripper is applied; it is not a substitute for the label’s safety directions or a general instruction to handle chemicals casually.

The UK Health and Safety Executive identifies wood dust and hazardous substances as woodworking risks and provides control guidance. Sanding can spread fine dust beyond the table, while stripping products can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s rules beginning July 8, 2024, add controls for certain industrial and commercial uses of methylene chloride in furniture refinishing. Those rules are not a complete statement of every US use and do not replace current local requirements. The safe choice is to identify the product’s active chemistry, read its current label and safety data, and follow the jurisdiction that applies to the work.

What the dining-room mockup is meant to decide
A room mockup is useful when it answers a physical question: Can the table, chairs, storage pieces, and circulation paths coexist at the intended scale? IKEA’s planning guidance recommends measuring the room, defining functional zones, preserving circulation, and checking door and drawer clearances before choosing furniture. Its Cyprus planning-tools page describes placing dimensioned furniture in a virtual room and viewing or printing a 3D plan. Availability and features vary by market, so these are examples of a planning approach, not a promise that every tool is available everywhere.
Build the mockup from measurements
- Measure the room shell. Record wall-to-wall dimensions, ceiling height where relevant, alcoves, radiators, vents, columns, and irregular corners.
- Locate openings. Measure every door and window, including swing direction, trim, and the space needed to open them fully.
- Measure furniture at its largest footprint. Include table leaves, chair backs, sideboards, handles, and any projection that affects movement.
- Draw circulation paths. Mark the route from the entry to the table, serving areas, windows, and adjacent rooms. A layout that works only when chairs are pushed in is not a working dining layout.
- Test doors and drawers. Open each one in the mockup and check that it does not collide with a chair, wall, or another unit.
- Save alternatives. Keep labeled versions for the current arrangement, the proposed arrangement, and any option that changes table orientation or storage location.
The mockup’s value is not its realism on screen; it is the confidence that comes from using the same dimensions in the digital plan and the physical room. A photograph can show style, but only measured planning exposes a door that cannot swing or a chair that cannot be pulled out.
Decision points to capture in the progress story
- Why was the table orientation kept or changed?
- Which circulation route had to remain clear?
- Did the mockup change the number or position of chairs?
- Were a sideboard, cabinet, or serving zone moved to protect door and drawer operation?
- Which version became the working plan, and what evidence supported that choice?
The current project record does not answer those questions. Capturing them turns a screenshot into a useful account of how the room was actually planned.
Storage-room progress starts with what must fit
Storage planning should begin with the objects, not the shelving photograph. Measure the usable opening and the interior of each shelf, then compare those dimensions with the containers’ full outside dimensions. Include rims, lids, handles, wheels, and any part that catches when a bin is moved.

Measurements that prevent a false fit
- Opening width and height: the clear space through which a container must pass.
- Interior depth and width: the space available after accounting for shelf supports, braces, and wall irregularities.
- Container dimensions: the maximum outside measurements, not the manufacturer’s nominal capacity.
- Lift and pull clearance: the space needed to grip, raise, slide, or rotate a container out of the shelf.
- Access route: the aisle, doorway, and turning area required to carry the item into and out of storage.
ICCROM’s storage workbook illustrates arranging different storage units while preserving access. The principle applies here: density is useful only while people can reach, identify, and remove what is stored. A plan that fills every gap can reduce usable capacity if the front row blocks the back row.
Match the plan to actual use
Group items by frequency and handling. Objects used weekly should not sit behind seasonal containers that require a full unload. Heavy items belong where they can be lifted safely. Fragile or irregular objects need a location that protects them from pressure and allows a clear grip. The homeowner’s inventory should record what the storage room actually holds; the current account does not list those items or establish the final shelf arrangement.
If adjustable shelving, modular units, or a custom installation were considered, compare them by usable capacity, access, footprint, adjustability, and fit with the measured containers. Do not compare a nominal shelf width with a bin’s advertised volume. The relevant test is whether the full object enters, rests securely, and comes out without dismantling the surrounding storage.

A clear progress story can follow this order:
- Trigger. State what prompted the update: a damaged finish, a change in dining-room use, insufficient storage, or another documented need.
- Assessment. Show the table’s starting condition, the room measurements, and the storage inventory before decisions were made.
- Decision. Explain why stripping, a particular room arrangement, or a storage configuration met the stated goal better than the alternatives actually considered.
- Work in progress. Date photographs and captions so readers can distinguish stripped wood, sanding, mockup views, shelf installation, and temporary staging.
- Outcome. Record the final finish, furniture placement, storage capacity, and any unresolved work. If the work is incomplete, say which step remains rather than implying completion.
Receipts can establish products and costs; photographs can establish sequence and condition; measured drawings can establish fit; and an interview can establish why a decision was made. None should be substituted by a generic tutorial’s assumptions.

What a conservation case can—and cannot—tell a household project
The Royal Collection Trust’s Waterloo Table provides a scale-specific conservation example, not a household benchmark. The table is 50 metres long. Stripping began in July 2018 and took three months; the entire French-polishing process took nine months, and it was the first stripping and polishing in 50 years. The Trust also reports that a new storage area for the table leaves was created to improve access and care.
Those figures show why object size, finish history, labor, and storage design can change a project timeline. They do not predict how long a dining table in a private home will take or what it will cost. The homeowner’s own dates, labor arrangement, materials, and interruptions are the only reliable basis for this update’s schedule and budget.
What remains to be documented
Before calling the update complete, the project record should add the table species and construction, original and replacement finishes, products and tools, room and storage dimensions, costs, dates, and final photographs. It should also identify any conservation advice obtained if the table may be old or valuable.
The most useful final comparison will show the same viewpoints before and after: the tabletop and edge, the dining-room circulation path with chairs pulled out, and the storage shelves with representative containers removed and replaced. Captions should identify what is visible and when it was captured. That evidence will let readers judge the result without mistaking general refinishing or planning guidance for a report of work that has not been documented.
