The Parthenon frieze is a continuous band of low-relief sculpture wrapped around the upper exterior wall of the temple’s cella, behind the outer colonnade. Most scholars understand it as an idealized procession for the Great Panathenaia, Athens’ major festival for Athena, moving toward the Acropolis. Riders, chariots, musicians, offering bearers, sacrificial animals and officials converge on an east-end scene associated with presenting a peplos to the goddess.
That broad identification is strong, but it does not settle every figure or episode. Ancient descriptions do not match every detail visible in the marble, and scholars continue to debate the procession’s organization, chronology and civic symbolism. The frieze is best read as both an architectural sequence and a carefully constructed image of Athenian religious and civic life.

What the Parthenon frieze is
The frieze is not a detached panel or a series of unrelated pictures. It is a single visual band designed for the Parthenon’s architecture. The official Acropolis Museum and Acropolis Restoration Service resource gives its total length as 160 metres and its height as 1.02 metres. It comprised 115 marble blocks and was installed in the temple between 443 and 438 BCE.
It runs around the upper part of the cella, the inner room that housed Athena’s cult image. Because the cella was enclosed by the outer colonnade, viewers on the ground saw the relief high above them, partly shaded and framed by columns. The sculpture’s meaning therefore depends on movement around a building: the eye follows a procession along the long sides and then encounters its culmination at the east.

The frieze uses low relief rather than the deeper, more projecting carving of the Parthenon’s metopes. That shallow technique made the work difficult to see from below, but it also allowed a long, continuous narrative to fit the temple’s walls. The resource estimates approximately 378 human and divine figures and at least 220 animals, mainly horses. A separate Acropolis Museum press release counts 380 human figures and 200 animals and objects. Those figures should not be combined: the institutions evidently used different counting criteria.
What does the Parthenon frieze depict?
The prevailing interpretation is the procession of the Great Panathenaia, the festival held in honour of Athena. Participants travelled toward the Acropolis, where a new peplos (a woven garment) was presented to the goddess’s ancient wooden image. The relief’s east end supplies the religious frame for the sequence, while the long sides provide the movement, crowds and preparation of the festival.

- horsemen and charioteers, occupying much of the long sides;
- young people carrying offerings and ceremonial vessels;
- musicians and olive-branch bearers;
- officials and other civic participants;
- sacrificial animals, including cattle; and
- the east-end gathering associated with the peplos, with seated Olympian gods on either side.
The museum’s object record for South frieze Block 17 (XVII) describes youths walking behind sacrificial cows, young men carrying offerings, musicians, officials with olive branches, chariots and riders. For the south side specifically, it reports sixty riders divided into ten groups. That figure belongs to the south-frieze record; it should not be treated as a count for every side of the monument.
How the procession is arranged around the temple
The relief’s design makes the building itself part of the subject. The procession occupies both long sides and approaches the east end from different directions. Figures on opposite sides are represented as moving toward the same destination, creating a visual convergence rather than a single left-to-right strip.

The long sides
Horses and chariots dominate the long sides because the sculptors had to suggest speed, rank and the scale of a public festival within a narrow band. Crowded groups are differentiated by posture, costume, equipment and the spacing of bodies. Offering bearers, musicians and animals interrupt the rhythm of the riders, giving the sequence the variety of an actual civic procession while preserving a controlled architectural order.

The south side is particularly important for reconstructing the event because its subject is recorded in a block-level museum entry. Its riders follow groups with cattle and offering bearers, allowing viewers to see how sacrifice, music, civic office and military-style display could be presented as parts of one festival.
The east end
At the east, the moving groups meet a more static assembly. The central scene is commonly connected with the handing over of the peplos, the garment made for Athena’s image. Seated gods appear on either side in the official resource’s description. This arrangement turns the procession into a meeting between human civic participants and the divine community.
The exact identities of every figure and the precise action at the centre are not universally agreed. A responsible description should distinguish what is plainly represented—groups approaching an east-end gathering—from interpretations that assign a particular person, object or ritual moment to each figure.
Why the Panathenaic reading is persuasive—and where it remains uncertain
The festival interpretation fits the combination of a destination on the Acropolis, a peplos scene, offerings, music, animals, chariots and riders. The Acropolis Museum resource reports that most scholars agree on this general theme. It also records discrepancies between ancient written accounts and the imagery that survives.

One useful example is the Panathenaic ship. Ancient accounts describe a ship as part of the peplos procession, yet no ship appears in the frieze. That absence does not automatically disprove the festival reading; it shows that the sculptors selected, transformed or omitted elements of the ceremony.
Scholars have proposed several ways to explain the differences. Some read the relief as one unified festival procession. Others see scenes drawn from different moments or periods, or interpret the imagery through Athenian civic and political ideals rather than as a literal itinerary. Questions about where a particular group is located, when an action takes place and how the two sides are organized remain open. These proposals are alternatives for interpreting the evidence, not interchangeable facts.
Scale, carving and visibility
At 160 metres long and only 1.02 metres high, the frieze is unusually extensive relative to its depth. The official resource says the shallow relief was carved high above ground and that colour helped make it legible. A blue background and other painted details would have separated figures from the stone and strengthened the sense of a continuous field.
The upper portions of figures were carved more deeply than lower areas, improving the effect when viewed from below. This was an optical solution as much as a sculptural one: the work had to read across distance, changing light and the interruptions of the colonnade.

The long-side blocks were generally carved after they had been set in place, a demanding method for a frieze already high on the building. The west frieze, by contrast, could be carved before installation. The difference reflects the practical conditions of building the temple, not a difference in the subject’s importance.

What happened to the frieze?
Changes before the explosion
The Parthenon was converted into a Christian church in antiquity, and the Acropolis Museum notes that some frieze blocks were removed to make windows. These alterations affected the survival of the sculpture before the building’s later military damage.
The 1687 explosion
In 1687, an explosion in the Parthenon caused extensive damage, especially to the long-side frieze. Large sections were broken or lost. Jacques Carrey’s drawings, made in 1674, are therefore unusually valuable: they record portions of the south side before the explosion and help scholars understand what was present when the monument was more complete.
Removal in the early nineteenth century
The Acropolis Museum’s south-frieze record says that relief-bearing faces were removed by Lord Elgin’s workmen between 1801 and 1804. Today, blocks are divided chiefly between the Acropolis Museum and the British Museum, with additional pieces elsewhere. The custody and return of the sculptures remain contested questions; the historical account of removal does not by itself resolve the legal or ethical dispute.
Where the surviving blocks are held
The official Acropolis Museum and Acropolis Restoration Service resource gives the following distribution for surviving material. Its metre figures describe the holdings reported by that resource, not a universal measurement standard used by every institution.
| Collection | Material reported | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Acropolis Museum, Athens | About 50 metres | Reported in the official frieze resource; the museum displays and documents preserved blocks. |
| British Museum, London | About 80 metres | Reported in the same resource; the museum independently describes a substantial frieze holding. |
| Louvre | One block | Reported in the official resource. |
| Other collections | Fragments | The resource notes additional fragments without giving a single combined metre total. |
Published summaries use different descriptions and counts, so a precise total should always be attributed to the institution that reports it. The Acropolis Museum’s press material, for example, gives 380 human figures and 200 animals and objects, while the official resource gives approximately 378 human and divine figures and at least 220 animals.

Conservation and the west frieze
The west frieze was the last part still in place. Exposure to weather and continuing erosion led to its removal and transfer to the Acropolis Museum in 1993. The official resource reports conservation work from 1999 to 2005. After comparisons among four cleaning methods, conservators selected laser cleaning.
Moving the west frieze indoors changed how it can be studied. In a museum, lighting, scale and close access make details that were difficult to read on the ancient building more visible, while the original architectural setting must be reconstructed through plans, photographs and digital models.

How to read the frieze without overstating the evidence
A three-layer approach keeps description and interpretation separate:
- Start with the visual sequence. Note direction, grouping, animals, instruments, vessels, clothing and the distinction between moving participants and the east-end assembly.
- Compare ancient written accounts. Ask which festival practices are described in texts and which are actually shown. The missing Panathenaic ship is a clear reminder that the relief is not a complete checklist of the ceremony.
- Label modern explanations as proposals. A claim about a figure’s identity, a precise location or a political message should be presented as an interpretation when the official resource records disagreement.
This method also prevents a common error: treating the frieze as a literal snapshot of one day. It is an idealized civic image, made for a temple whose architecture, cult and public identity shaped what could be shown.
Why the frieze matters
The Parthenon’s other sculpture includes mythological battles and divine subjects, but the frieze gives exceptional prominence to people participating in a civic-religious event. Its riders, musicians, officials, offering bearers and sacrificial animals turn the city’s festival life into monumental art. At the same time, the approaching human groups are directed toward Athena and the gods, placing civic identity within a religious framework.
Because the relief encircles the cella, no single viewpoint contains the whole message. Viewers encounter fragments in sequence, just as participants in a procession would experience movement, delay and convergence. The building’s height and colonnade make the image collective rather than intimate: it was designed to be seen by a community gathered around a temple.
