What the Year of the Dog Means in Chinese, Japanese and Thai Traditions

Chinese artifacts, Japanese dog history and Thai horoscope manuscripts document distinct ways the Dog appears across the three traditions.

The Dog is one of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac cycle, but surviving objects do not give it one uniform meaning across China, Japan and Thailand. Chinese museum collections show zodiac figures alongside dogs in daily life, ritual and art; a Japanese museum exhibition documents changing relationships with dogs rather than a single zodiac interpretation; and Thai folding manuscripts directly connect animal years with birth-year descriptions and divination. The evidence is therefore strongest for illustrated horoscope manuscripts in Thailand, while the Chinese and Japanese examples are different kinds of objects and records.

What does the Year of the Dog mean?

In Chinese tradition, the Dog is the eleventh animal in the familiar twelve-animal sequence, followed by the Pig. The Metropolitan Museum of Art says the animals became associated with the Chinese lunar calendar in the third century BCE and were firmly established by the first century. It also reports a traditional belief that people born in a Dog year are active, loyal and vigilant; this is a zodiac attribution, not a factual assessment of personality. The Met’s Year of the Dog exhibition page places that belief in the wider history of dogs as working, protective and companion animals in China.

The objects add important context: an animal can mark a year, appear in an auspicious custom, or represent a familiar animal without every image functioning as a zodiac sign. The surviving Chinese, Japanese and Thai examples here document those roles unevenly.

What Chinese objects show the Dog’s different roles?

Zodiac animals as material culture

The Met’s Tang-dynasty set of twelve zodiac animals, dated to the eighth century, makes the cycle visible as a group of objects. The museum notes that the conventional animal order was established by the Eastern Han period and that the animals were later paired with ten calendrical elements to create a sixty-year cycle. The pottery figures were tomb offerings, which the museum interprets cautiously as likely connected with ideas of renewal and regeneration. The collection record for the set documents the figures themselves; it does not establish that every Dog image in Chinese art was a zodiac object.

Dogs beyond the zodiac

A separate example on the Met’s exhibition page is an Eastern Han glazed earthenware dog dated 25–220 CE. The museum also describes dogs in Chinese painting, metalwork and pottery tomb figures across different periods. Such images can speak to dogs’ practical and social place in life as well as artistic representation; they should not automatically be read as year symbols. The Met’s exhibition account discusses work, protection and companionship in this broader history.

Festival, folk and artistic imagery

The National Museum of China’s 2018 exhibition grouped more than 100 cultural relics under four themes: Spring Festival customs, dogs in daily life, folk-cultural and spiritual meanings, and companionship in literature and art. The museum lists illustrated books, scroll paintings, New Year pictures, pottery, bronzes, jade, paintings and folk art among its materials. Its account describes Spring Festival as a time for prayers for good fortune and blessings. This breadth shows why “Dog symbolism” cannot be reduced to one zodiac personality or one kind of image. The National Museum of China’s exhibition record documents the range of media and themes.

What does the Japanese evidence say about dogs?

The Kyoto National Museum’s “Puppies Galore: Celebrating the Year of the Dog” exhibition ran from December 19, 2017, to January 21, 2018. It identified 2018 as a Dog year in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle, then focused on the history of human relationships with dogs in Japan. It describes hunting dogs and small indoor companions, rather than proposing one shared Japanese zodiac meaning. The museum’s exhibition page recounts a story in historical records that Emperor Ōjin (200–310 CE) built a special tomb for his dog Manashiro; this is the museum’s report of a traditional account, not independent proof of the event.

The exhibition also traces changing ideas about small dogs. The Japanese Chin was a beloved indoor dog, but the museum says the breed did not originate in Japan: short-nosed dogs from Tibet had arrived by at least the Nara period (710–794). During the Edo period (1615–1868), “Chin” could refer both to small lapdogs and to longer-snouted terriers. These details illuminate shifting canine history and terminology, not a fixed meaning for the zodiac Dog.

What do Thai illustrated horoscope manuscripts say?

A folding manuscript with animal-year descriptions

The Library of Congress catalogs Hōrāsāt Bōrān Kong Thai as a Thai-language, ink-on-paper folding manuscript comprising 21 folios and measuring 34 × 10 cm. Its catalog description says it illustrates the twelve zodiac animals and explains characteristics attributed to people born in each year. The catalog does not give a publication date or publisher, so neither can be assigned from this record. The Library of Congress catalog image and record provide direct evidence for an illustrated manuscript linking animal years with birth-year descriptions.

Phrommachat manuals and divination

British Library records document another Thai manuscript tradition. The record for Phrommachat, shelfmark Or 12167, describes drawings based on the Chinese zodiac, explanations and illustrations of lucky and unlucky omens, and use as a fortune-telling and divination manual. A separate record describes Or 13650 as a horoscope manual with colored drawings of the twelve animal years in two series, made during Rama V’s reign before the end of the nineteenth century. The Or 12167 catalog record and the British Library’s catalog results for Thai, Lao and Cambodian collections establish the manuals’ broad divinatory context.

These catalog descriptions do not provide a full translation of the Dog passage in either manuscript. They support the conclusion that Thai animal-year cycles could be used for birth-year interpretation and divination, but they do not establish a specific Thai Dog personality or lucky meaning.
