If a spring-blooming perennial has become crowded or is flowering less well, October can be a good time to divide it—but only if it is a suitable plant and your local weather leaves time for its roots to re-establish. Don’t treat October as a signal to divide every perennial or cut all its foliage down.
Should you divide your spring-blooming perennials in October?
Consider dividing a clump when it is crowded, blooming less, producing smaller flowers, flopping, or developing a bare center. Those signs suggest the plant may benefit; they do not prove division is the only fix. A healthy, open-growing clump can usually stay where it is.
Fall division is generally suited to spring- and early- to mid-summer-blooming perennials. Nebraska Extension lists peony, geum, and creeping phlox as examples in its fall division guidance. The Associated Press also recommends checking the plant before dividing: woody crowns and deep taproots are examples of traits that can make a perennial a poor candidate.
Local timing matters. The roots need time to settle in before winter, and there is no universal geographic cutoff for fall division. Check species-specific advice and use your local frost pattern rather than the calendar alone. Fall-blooming perennials are generally divided in spring, according to the University of Maryland Extension’s perennial care guidance.

How to divide and replant a perennial clump
- Prepare the new spot first. If possible, make planting holes before lifting the plant so its roots spend less time exposed.
- Trim and lift the plant. Nebraska Extension advises trimming the top to about six inches for division. Lift the clump carefully.
- Separate it. For a large, tight clump, the AP describes setting two garden forks back-to-back through the center and pulling the handles in opposite directions. A smaller plant with loose roots may come apart by hand. Make sure each piece has healthy roots and shoots.
- Replant promptly. Set each division with its root ball at or slightly above the soil line. Firm soil around it to remove air pockets and water well. The AP advises against fertilizing at planting.
- Keep watering as it establishes. Water when rainfall is insufficient while the divisions settle into their new spots.
Should you cut back perennials in October?
Not simply because it is October. For herbaceous perennials, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension’s October Garden Guide recommends waiting until two or three hard frosts and until leaves begin to brown before cutting stems and foliage back. That is a practical regional cue, not a date that applies everywhere.
Some herbaceous perennials retain evergreen leaves through winter, so check the plant before cutting it back. You can also leave suitable healthy stems standing if you prefer winter structure. Remove diseased or insect-infested material rather than leaving it in the garden.

When and how to mulch after division
Mulch can help retain moisture and moderate soil temperature, but timing depends on the plant and local conditions. Nebraska’s October guidance suggests a light layer after several hard frosts. Penn State Extension describes winter mulch for newly planted or divided perennials and tender plants, with gradual removal in spring; see its perennial care guidance.
Keep mulch from piling against plant crowns, and follow local advice for your climate. A recommendation to mulch spring-flowering bulbs after the soil begins to freeze is specific to bulbs, not a rule for every perennial; the University of Minnesota Extension explains that bulb timing.
