The most expensive single Bored Ape NFT documented in Sotheby’s 2021 retrospective was Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) #8817, which sold for about $3.4 million in October 2021. Decrypt reported the price as $3.408 million; Sotheby’s later rounded it to $3.4 million. That is a documented 2021 record, not proof that #8817 remains the most expensive Bored Ape today: the available sources do not establish a complete ranking of later sales.
Which Bored Ape sold for about $3.4 million?
The sale was BAYC #8817, sold at Sotheby’s in October 2021. Sotheby’s described the result in its year-end retrospective as “a record for a single Bored Ape ($3.4 million),” while contemporaneous reporting by Decrypt identified #8817 and reported $3.408 million. The rounded figure is Sotheby’s own description; use the more precise number with Decrypt attributed.

It does not establish the current all-time record, a present-day asking price, or what another Bored Ape is worth. A sale records what one buyer paid for one token in a particular venue and moment.
Why a $24 million-plus Bored Ape headline can mean something different
Not every large auction headline gives the price of one ape. Sotheby’s separate 2021 “Ape in!” sale was a lot of 101 Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs. Its reported lot result is not a single-token Bored Ape price. When comparing headlines, first check what the lot actually contained; bundle totals and individual NFT sales are different measures.

- Print Dimensions: 24" x 16";Finished Dimensions: 24" x 16"
- Premium Printing: Printed on premium paper using non-toxic, archival inks that protect against UV light to resist fading
- Beautiful Artwork For Any Room: Wall art provides the perfect finishing touch to your living room, dining room, family room, bedroom, kid's room, bathroom, kitchen, office, laundry room, nursery, or any room with unwanted blank wall space
Sotheby’s auction listing also cautions that results may include buyer’s premiums and exclude applicable taxes or other costs. Those details matter when comparing an auction result with another venue’s price or with an estimate.
What a Bored Ape NFT represents
A unique token in a 10,000-piece collection
Sotheby’s catalogue describes BAYC as 10,000 unique cartoon apes with varying rarity, issued as ERC-721 tokens on Ethereum. Each token is associated with artwork and particular visual traits. Rarity can contribute to a collector’s interest, but the available sources do not establish a trait-by-trait price premium or an appraisal formula that converts rarity into dollars.

Artwork, identity and community positioning
Ape ownership has also been framed as social identity and membership. Sotheby’s describes the images as social-media avatars and membership passes; the official BAYC site foregrounds its clubhouse, members, activations and trading. These features may shape demand, but they do not guarantee future access, resale interest or value.
How to assess a Bored Ape sale or valuation
A price is a market outcome, not a score printed on the NFT. To make a comparison useful, separate the evidence into the following checks:

- Unit and transaction: Confirm whether the sale involved one token or a bundle. Record the date, venue, currency and whether the reported auction result includes a buyer’s premium. Do not treat an estimate and a completed sale as equivalent.
- Traits: Verify the specific ape’s attributes and how the source describes their rarity. A rare trait may help explain collector interest, but rarity rankings alone do not yield a defensible dollar valuation.
- Provenance: Check the token’s on-chain history and confirm that the listing refers to the token being discussed. A headline or image alone does not establish ownership or provenance.
- Community and utility: Consider what membership or other collection features were available at the time of the transaction. Their existence is not a promise that utility or buyer demand will continue.
- Timing and liquidity: Treat a historic result as evidence of one transaction, not as proof that the NFT could be resold now at the same price. The sources cited here do not supply a current comprehensive price ranking or establish present liquidity.
What rights does owning a BAYC NFT provide?
Yuga Labs’ BAYC License says that each Bored Ape is an NFT on Ethereum and describes the buyer’s ownership in relation to the token, smart contract and network. For a compliant owner, the license grants an unlimited, worldwide license to use, copy and display the purchased artwork in derivative works, with merchandise given as an example. It does not transfer every Yuga Labs intellectual-property right. The license’s current terms govern; owning the NFT should not be described as owning all BAYC intellectual property.
The license also puts responsibility for private Ethereum wallet safety on users and warns that transactions cannot be undone, reversed or restored. Those are practical ownership risks, not factors that establish an NFT’s price.

What Sotheby’s 2021 figures do—and do not—show
In its 2021 retrospective, Sotheby’s reported nearly $100 million in NFT sales to date and said 78% of its NFT bidders were new to the auction house. These figures describe Sotheby’s own business and bidders in that period; they are not measures of total NFT-market sales or of all NFT buyers.
