Kristi Linauer’s October 27, 2025 post is an honest account of repainting an existing bedroom dresser while repeatedly changing her mind about the color. The project moves from rejected neutrals to green, orange and coral mockups, an unexplained paint-store choice, a darker green that fails in the room, and another planned attempt. Underneath the humor is a specific decorating problem. She is repainting a bedroom dresser and wants a color with enough life to avoid looking bland, but not so much visual force that the dresser takes over the room. Every test gives her new information while also exposing another concern. The update ends before a finished color is shown, so the meaningful outcome is the decision process itself rather than a reveal.
Why the neutral samples were rejected

After settling on the general idea of green, Linauer went to Home Depot for paint. She returned with a color she could not explain choosing. The post does not name the paint brand, color code, finish, or reason for the selection, and it does not claim that the store’s staff or a particular product caused the change.
That unexplained purchase is important because it shows how quickly an imagined color can become a different physical decision. The mockups had given her a direction; the trip produced a can that did not fit a tidy explanation. Rather than presenting the choice as a confident design move, she treats it as another turn in the experiment.

A darker green is tested and rejected
Linauer later visited Sherwin-Williams and considered a darker green suggested by her mother. The source reports the suggestion indirectly; it does not provide a verbatim quotation or identify a formal color consultation. Linauer applied the darker green to the dresser and then decided it was wrong for the room.

This is the clearest completed test in the post. The color was not rejected as a paint product, and the post does not describe defects in application. The problem was fit: once the darker green occupied the dresser, it did not read as belonging in that bedroom. That distinction matters. A shade can be perfectly usable as paint and still fail the particular visual relationship an owner is trying to create.
The decision also turns the dresser into a diagnostic object. A color that looked promising as a suggestion had to be judged after it was placed on the actual furniture, in the actual room. Linauer’s conclusion came from that encounter rather than from a general rule about dark colors.
The next idea comes from an adjusted image
After the darker green failed, Linauer’s mother adjusted a color image and suggested another direction. Linauer liked the resulting green and could see how it worked with the bird fabric associated with the room. The fabric connection gave the color a concrete relationship that the earlier choices had lacked.
Even so, liking the green beside the bird fabric did not settle the matter. Linauer felt that the shade did not look like a color that belonged in her own house. This is a different objection from saying that it clashed with the fabric. In her account, the coordination looked promising in one relationship while the larger sense of personal fit remained unresolved.
The post does not identify the bird fabric’s maker, pattern name or exact colors. It also does not state whether the fabric is on the dresser, elsewhere in the bedroom, or being used only as a reference. What is clear is that the fabric became part of the visual evidence she used while reconsidering the dresser.

A connection to a planned foyer bench
Linauer then connected the color question to a green cube print she planned to use on a foyer bench. The print introduced a second future project into the dresser decision. She was no longer judging the dresser only against the bedroom and its bird fabric; she was also considering whether a green idea could make sense elsewhere in the house.
That connection does not mean the dresser and bench were intended to match exactly. The post presents the cube print as a reference point that helped her think about a green that felt more like her home. The bench itself is described as planned, not as a completed installation, so its final appearance is not part of the reported result.
This cross-room association explains why a shade can be attractive in isolation yet still feel wrong. Linauer was looking for a color with a recognizable relationship to objects and projects she cared about, not simply a hue that photographed well in a mockup.
The target: brighter and livelier, but not dominant
By the end of the update, Linauer hopes another attempt will be brighter and livelier without making the dresser demand to be the room’s focal point. Those two wishes pull in opposite directions. More energy can make furniture stand out; less dominance can make a vivid choice feel integrated.
Her wording is personal rather than a universal decorating formula. She is not arguing that every bedroom dresser should be colorful, subdued or coordinated with a particular print. She is describing the narrow balance she wants in this room: enough color to move beyond the rejected neutrals, enough restraint to let the room remain a room rather than a display built around one painted object.
The phrase also clarifies why the project keeps changing course. Each candidate is being evaluated on at least three fronts: whether Linauer likes the color itself, whether it relates to the fabrics and prints she is considering, and whether it feels at home in the room without becoming overbearing. Why the project feels like backtracking
From the outside, the sequence looks inefficient: reject neutrals, favor green, buy an unexplained color, try a darker green, reject it, then consider another green. Linauer’s title turns that apparent inefficiency into the subject. The dresser is not moving toward a finished photograph in a straight line; it is accumulating eliminated possibilities.

Each reversal still changes what she knows. Neutral samples no longer represent the direction she wants. The darker green has been physically tested and ruled out for this room. The bird fabric and cube print have become reference points, but neither has produced a final answer. The process is therefore productive in an informational sense even while the visible furniture remains unsettled.
That interpretation should not be inflated into a claim that experimentation always saves time or money. The post supplies no total paint cost, number of coats, labor estimate or schedule. It records one homeowner’s changing judgment, with the humor and frustration that accompany it.
What the post does not tell us
Several practical details remain unspecified. The dresser’s material, preparation method, primer, paint finish, color names and drying conditions are not given. Neither Home Depot nor Sherwin-Williams is associated with a named product in the update. There are no test results for durability, coverage or wear.
The post also does not report the eventual finished shade. How to read the update as a project journal
The value of this progress report lies in its candor about decisions that are usually edited out of a finished-room story. A polished makeover often presents one color as inevitable. Linauer shows the less tidy path: a preferred mockup, a different purchase, a real-world test, a rejection, a promising fabric relationship, and a lingering sense that the shade is not yet hers.
Her mother’s role is collaborative rather than authoritative in the account. A suggestion leads to the darker green, and an adjusted image leads to another possibility, but Linauer makes the final judgments herself. The room, the bird fabric, the planned cube print and her sense of what belongs in her house all remain part of that judgment.
