Kristi Linauer’s “stupid mistake” was a flower-counting error on a custom closet chandelier. She had planned three rows of 16 stems, or 48 flowers, but during an exhausting period of caregiving she discovered that her completed batch did not cover the design. The mistake mattered less than what it revealed: she was running on roughly 5.5 to 6 hours of sleep, managing intensive care routines for her dog and husband, and no longer had enough uninterrupted time or concentration for a demanding project. In a July 23, 2025 post, Linauer said she would step away from blogging for about a week and a half to rest and establish a household schedule she could sustain.

The mistake was simple; the circumstances were not
Linauer was building a custom chandelier for a closet. Her design had three rows of 16 stems. That specification meant 48 flowers were needed. She had made 38 flowers and one additional flower, then realized she did not have enough to complete the planned arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
Linauer described the shortfall as ten flowers. The figures in her account are not fully arithmetically clear if the extra flower is counted separately: 48 required minus 39 made would be nine. She may have been counting the spare differently, but the important point is unchanged—her finished supply was short of the design, and she traced the error to mental arithmetic during an unusually tiring stretch. The count is preserved here as she reported it, rather than treated as a corrected calculation.

| Part of the plan | Figure Linauer reported | What it meant for the build |
|---|---|---|
| Rows of stems | 3 | The chandelier was divided into three repeated sections. |
| Stems per row | 16 | Each row required 16 flower positions. |
| Total flowers required | 48 | Three rows multiplied by 16 positions. |
| Flowers made | 38 plus one extra | She discovered the completed batch did not meet the design requirement. |
| Shortfall she stated | 10 flowers | Her own description of the gap, with the counting ambiguity noted above. |
This was not a complicated engineering failure or a defective material. It was the kind of basic count that is usually caught before fabrication, which is precisely why Linauer called it a “stupid mistake.” Her account, however, places the error in context rather than presenting it as evidence that she was incapable of the work.
Where the chandelier project stood
By the time she found the error, the project had moved well beyond an idea. Linauer had already cut the stems and shortened a metal chandelier component so it would fit an attachment. She had primed and painted chandelier components and hardware, then pre-fitted the parts to check the clearances around the stems, flowers and lights.
She had also drilled the holes needed for the flower stems. The remaining work was concrete: sand the additional flowers, prime them, spray-paint them and assemble the chandelier. Those steps are specific to her project, not a universal chandelier tutorial, and her post does not identify product brands, models or a complete set of construction instructions.
Why a count matters in a repeated design
A repeated floral pattern leaves little room for an approximate inventory. Every stem position has a visual role, and a missing group can force a maker to stop at the finishing stage, when much of the preparatory labor is already complete. Linauer’s experience shows why a parts count belongs at more than one checkpoint: before cutting, before painting and again before assembly.

That observation does not turn her post into a formal method or guarantee. It is a practical lesson visible in the sequence she described: a design was calculated, components were prepared, and a shortage emerged only after substantial work had been done.
Caregiving had changed what “enough time” meant
Linauer connected the mistake to a much larger change in her daily responsibilities. She wrote that her dog, Cooper, had been taken to an emergency veterinary clinic on July 4 after regurgitating food. According to her account, scans showed a chest tumor causing megaesophagus, and she was trying to work out a feeding and care routine.
She also described a large swelling on Cooper’s leg that began bleeding. Her regular veterinarian, she said, found three puncture wounds, cleaned the area and prescribed antibiotics and a topical wash. These are details from Linauer’s personal account, not an independent veterinary assessment or instructions for treating an animal.
The routine she described
Linauer said Cooper’s care added four supervised feedings each day. After meals, she kept him upright for 20 minutes. She also described about five supervised leash outings daily. Each task may sound limited in isolation, but together they divided the day into many fixed appointments and reduced the uninterrupted blocks of time available for painting and assembly.

She was also caring for her husband, Matt. Linauer wrote that after a hospital stay in February 2024, he could not feed himself. She linked the combined demands—and the resulting interrupted sleep—to exhaustion and difficulty concentrating. She reported sleeping about 5.5 to 6 hours per night. That figure is her own report, not a sleep study or a population statistic.
The connection she drew was straightforward: when care obligations multiply and rest is interrupted, a familiar task can require more mental effort. A flower count that might normally be checked quickly became the point at which she recognized that her current workload was not sustainable.
Why she chose a break instead of forcing the project
Linauer announced a planned pause from blogging lasting about a week and a half. She hoped to return on August 4, 2025, while continuing to work on projects as time allowed. The post records an intention at that date; it does not establish whether she returned on schedule or what her circumstances are now.

And I need sleep and rest.”

That decision reframed the flower shortage. Instead of rushing to make ten more flowers, she paused the public-facing work and gave priority to care and recovery. The project could wait; the schedule problem could not.

Linauer did not present a productivity system, and her experience cannot establish a general rule about caregiver burnout. Still, painters and makers can draw narrowly practical lessons from the sequence she described.
Check quantities before committing to finish work
For a repeated design, write the required count in the project notes and compare it with the physical parts before priming or spraying. A second count after drilling or test-fitting can catch a discrepancy while corrections are still easy. This is a workflow safeguard, not a judgment about anyone’s competence.
Separate “project progress” from “project readiness”
Linauer had completed cutting, modification, painting of some components, drilling and a clearance test. Those milestones represented real progress, but they did not mean the chandelier was ready to assemble. Keeping a short list of unfinished dependencies—such as the remaining flowers—helps prevent a nearly complete appearance from masking a missing part.

Protect uninterrupted blocks when the work requires counting
Her account shows how repeated feedings, post-meal supervision and scheduled outings can fragment a day. If a task depends on accurate counting, measuring or layout, it may be safer to reserve it for a quiet block and use shorter periods for sanding or cleanup. The point is to match the task to the attention available, not to force every project into the same schedule.
Stop when the schedule no longer supports reliable work
Linauer’s pause was a decision about capacity, not a declaration that the chandelier had failed. When sleep is repeatedly interrupted and care duties are unpredictable, postponing a count, layout or finish coat can prevent additional rework. A break also creates room to redesign the household routine before restarting the project.
What this account does—and does not—tell us
The post is a first-person update from one household. It does not include a named study, survey or externally published statistic. It cannot show how common similar counting mistakes are, establish a medical explanation for fatigue, or provide veterinary guidance for megaesophagus, tumors, wounds or feeding routines.
Recommended Free Tools
It does show a specific chain of events: a demanding chandelier project, a flower inventory that came up short, expanding responsibilities for a dog and a husband, reduced sleep, and a decision to step away from blogging. Keeping those boundaries matters. The value of the story is not a universal diagnosis; it is the clear example of how ordinary project errors can surface when a person’s available attention has been consumed elsewhere.
A concise timeline of the update
| Date or period | Event Linauer described |
|---|---|
| February 2024 | Matt had a hospital stay; Linauer later said he could not feed himself afterward. |
| July 4, 2025 | Cooper was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic after regurgitating food. Linauer reported that scans showed a chest tumor causing megaesophagus. |
| After July 4 | Linauer described a bleeding leg swelling; her regular veterinarian reportedly found three puncture wounds, cleaned them and prescribed antibiotics and a topical wash. |
| July 23, 2025 | She published the update, explained the chandelier shortfall and announced a planned week-and-a-half blogging break. |
| August 4, 2025 | Her intended return date, as stated in the July 23 post. The post itself does not confirm what happened afterward. |
The practical meaning of “I need a break”
In this story, the break was part of finishing responsibly. Linauer had enough information to see that adding more production hours would not solve the underlying problem: her care schedule and sleep had changed. Rest and a workable routine were prerequisites for returning to detailed, repetitive tasks such as sanding, spraying, counting and assembly.
The chandelier remained an unfinished object, but the unfinished object was not the emergency. Her update makes that priority visible without pretending that one person’s experience can stand in for everyone’s. A simple arithmetic error became a useful signal: before making the next flower, she needed to make room for herself.
