The best place to buy cabinet hardware depends on what you need. Start with a broad home-improvement retailer for common knobs, pulls and multi-packs; use a specialist when you need hinges, drawer slides or an exact replacement; choose a designer maker or showroom for distinctive finishes and in-person guidance; and search vintage or handmade marketplaces for one-off, historic or unusual pieces. No single seller is best for every cabinet, budget or style.

For a painted-cabinet update, the most important step comes before browsing: identify the component, measure the existing holes and confirm that the replacement matches the cabinet’s construction. Decorative hardware is easy to shop by appearance. Functional hardware is a fit problem first and a style problem second.

Know whether you are buying decoration or a mechanism
Cabinet hardware falls into two shopping problems:
- Decorative hardware: knobs, pulls and backplates. These are selected mainly for appearance and grip, but replacement pieces still need to match the existing screw-hole spacing.
- Functional hardware: hinges and drawer slides. These control how a door or drawer moves and must match the cabinet’s construction and mounting geometry.
A decorative pull can look perfect online and still fail if its mounting holes do not line up. A hinge or slide can have the right finish and still be unusable if its overlay, hole pattern or mounting position differs from the original.

A knob normally attaches with one screw. A pull usually provides a larger grip and attaches at two mounting points, although sizes and designs vary. Knobs can suit small doors or a simple furniture look; pulls often provide more leverage on wide drawers and tall doors. Choose based on the number and location of existing holes as well as the visual proportion of the door or drawer.

Measure a pull before you shop
The critical measurement is center-to-center spacing: the distance from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other. It is not the same as the pull’s overall length, which includes the material beyond the screw holes.
- Open the door or drawer and locate the centers of the existing mounting screws.
- Measure from the center of one screw to the center of the other. Record the measurement in the unit used by the seller.
- Measure the pull’s overall length separately if you need to check clearance or visual proportion.
- Record the screw diameter, approximate length and whether the back of the door or drawer has any unusual reinforcement or obstruction.
- Search listings using the center-to-center measurement first, then filter by style, finish and overall length.
- Compare the product drawing or dimension diagram with your own measurements before ordering.
For a like-for-like replacement, an exact center-to-center match lets you reuse the existing holes. If the spacing is different, you may need to fill and refinish the old holes and drill new ones; that turns a simple hardware swap into a cabinet-finishing project.
Check hinge compatibility instead of shopping by appearance
Hinges vary with door construction, cabinet construction, overlay and mounting method. Exact hole-pattern matching is often necessary when replacing an existing hinge. A listing that says “cabinet hinge” is not enough information by itself.
- Remove one hinge, or photograph it in place, so you can see its mounting plates, screw positions and cup or bracket shape.
- Record whether the door is inset, partially overlaying or fully overlaying the cabinet frame.
- Compare the number, spacing and location of screw holes on both the door and cabinet side.
- Check whether the replacement is intended for the same cabinet construction and mounting type.
- Confirm the opening angle and any soft-close or self-closing feature only after the physical fit is established.
Specialist listings often provide the diagrams needed for this comparison. If a measurement or hole pattern is not stated, ask the seller rather than assuming that a similar-looking hinge will work.

Check drawer-slide compatibility
Drawer slides require more than a length measurement. Check the mounting position, extension, slide length and cabinet construction. A slide mounted under a drawer is not automatically interchangeable with one mounted on the side, and a full-extension design may require different clearances from an existing slide.
- Measure the existing slide length and the usable cabinet depth.
- Identify where the slide is mounted relative to the drawer box.
- Note whether the drawer opens partially or extends fully.
- Check the available side and bottom clearances.
- Match the replacement’s mounting geometry and stated cabinet requirements.
When the original slide is unavailable, photograph the installation and measure both sides of the drawer box and cabinet opening. Those details are more useful than choosing a slide solely by advertised length.
Compare stores on the factors that affect the outcome

A reliable buying process for a painted-cabinet project
- Inventory every opening. Count doors, drawers and furniture pieces. Separate knobs, pulls, hinges and slides so you do not mix measurements.
- Measure before browsing. Record pull center-to-center spacing, hinge hole locations and slide dimensions. Photograph the existing installation for reference.
- Choose the source category. Use a broad retailer for standard decorative pieces, a specialist for functional replacements, a showroom for design coordination or a marketplace for unusual work.
- Shortlist by fit first. Eliminate listings without the required dimensions or mounting information before comparing finishes.
- Order one sample when possible. Check scale, grip, projection and color against the painted surface and nearby fixtures before buying the full quantity.
- Verify the selling unit. Confirm whether the listing includes one item, a pair, a set or a multi-pack, and calculate the quantity needed with a spare if the seller’s terms make returns difficult.
- Recheck current logistics. Inventory, price, shipping time and showroom availability change. Confirm them directly with the seller immediately before checkout.
Coordinate hardware with painted furniture and cabinets
Paint changes how hardware reads. A high-contrast finish can make a simple pull a focal point, while a closely matched finish creates a quieter result. Use the actual painted door or a representative sample when comparing finishes; online images and showroom lighting can alter perceived color.
Keep the functional layout consistent unless you are deliberately repairing old holes. Replacing every pull with the same center-to-center dimension preserves the existing drilling pattern and avoids patching and repainting. On a furniture piece with mixed door and drawer sizes, keep the finish consistent and vary the hardware length only when the proportions call for it.

Same-named finishes are not interchangeable between makers. Compare the maker’s finish sample, product photographs and return terms rather than assuming that two products labeled “satin brass,” “oil-rubbed bronze” or “matte black” will match.
Buy vintage or handmade hardware with a listing-by-listing inspection
Vintage and handmade pieces can supply character that mass-produced collections do not, but they also carry more uncertainty. Before paying, verify:
- Exact overall dimensions and mounting-hole spacing
- Number of pieces included and whether matching pairs are actually available
- Condition, including wear, missing screws, bends, chips or repaired areas
- Whether the finish is original, deliberately distressed or newly applied
- Seller-specific return, damage-claim and cancellation terms
- Compatibility with the cabinet or furniture construction
Ask for additional photographs or measurements when the listing is ambiguous. A distinctive piece is only useful if you can install it without compromising the painted surface or leaving unusable holes.
