For a new handmade quilt, first contact a charity or local coordinator whose recipients match the quilt; confirm its current specifications and handoff instructions before dropping it off or mailing it. Project Linus serves children ages 0–18, Quilts for Kids focuses on children in hospital care, and Quilts of Valor serves eligible service members and veterans touched by war. Their requirements are different.

Project Linus: children ages 0–18
Project Linus provides handmade blankets to children in the United States who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. Its chapters distribute blankets locally, and the organization says chapters operate in every state. Project Linus reports that it has delivered more than 10,688,428 blankets since 1995; that is the organization’s own reported count, not an independently audited total. Project Linus

Quilts of Valor: eligible service members and veterans

Project Linus requirements and local variations
Project Linus’s national policy accepts new, handmade, washable blankets and afghans for children ages 0–18, and says all sizes and styles are acceptable in principle. However, its FAQ notes that a local chapter may set narrower requirements to match recipient facilities. Check with the chapter before finishing or delivering a quilt.
- Make sure the blanket is free of pins, smoke smells, chemicals, and pet hair.
- Remove small detachable embellishments, such as buttons.
- Ask the chapter about its current size, fabric, and delivery needs.
Project Linus describes the work this way: “Our volunteers, known as ‘blanketeers,’ provide new handmade, washable blankets to be given as gifts to seriously ill and traumatized children, ages 0-18.” Project Linus volunteer information

Local instructions can be more specific than the national policy. For example, the Dallas/Denton chapter welcomes finished quilts or quilt tops and provides suggested child and teen sizes. Its guidance calls for child-friendly cotton or flannel and no raw binding edges. Those are local directions, not universal Project Linus rules. Dallas/Denton chapter guidance
Quilts of Valor construction and labeling
Quilts of Valor requires a finished quilt measuring 55 by 65 inches to 72 by 90 inches, with a top, batting, and backing joined by machine or hand quilting. Tied quilts are not accepted. The foundation also specifies adult-appropriate quality cotton quilt-weight fabrics, a label identifying the quilt as a Quilt of Valor, and laundering after completion with mild, unscented detergent. Decide how to hand the quilt over
Donation logistics vary: one chapter may arrange local delivery, while another program may require a return shipment or coordinator-mediated award. Confirm that the organization is currently accepting quilts and can use yours before making a trip or paying for postage.
Quilts for Kids kits
Quilts for Kids offers a kit with pattern instructions, a label, precut top pieces, and backing fabric; batting is not listed among the kit contents. Completed quilts are returned to the organization’s headquarters in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania. The kit page provides a return window and a limit on outstanding kits, so review its current instructions before ordering or beginning a kit. Quilts for Kids kit and volunteer information

Contact the local coordinator
For Project Linus, start with the nearest chapter; for Quilts of Valor, contact a local group or state coordinator. A concise message can include the quilt’s dimensions and fabric:
I have a new, washable handmade quilt, approximately [dimensions], made from [fabric]. Are you currently accepting quilts of this size, and what are your drop-off or shipping instructions?
That wording is a suggested inquiry, not a standard form or required language. If you are making a quilt specifically to donate, confirm material and construction rules first. A Project Linus chapter in Pittsburgh says it accepts quilt batting, while Quilts of Valor specifies batting as one of its three quilt layers; neither fact means every charity accepts every batting type.
