The famous “UFO houses” are real prefabricated Futuro homes, not a single worldwide building type. Finnish architect Matti Suuronen designed them as portable holiday and ski homes in the late 1960s. Their reinforced-plastic shells, oval windows and saucer profile made them icons of space-age design. Nine surviving examples highlighted by Architectural Digest are located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Russia. Their reported uses range from a museum object and university space to summer houses, retreats and rentals; access and booking conditions can change, so a listing should never be treated as proof that visitors can enter or stay there today.
What is a Futuro house?
A Futuro is a factory-made, transportable dwelling created by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. Suuronen first conceived it as a ski chalet that could be delivered to a remote site and heated quickly. The result was a compact, elevated pod with a circular plan, a hatch-like entrance and a ring of windows. The form is often described as saucer-shaped or UFO-like, but “Futuro house” is the precise name for this particular prefab design.

A 2023 account in The Guardian gives the diameter as approximately eight metres. The lightweight composite construction made the units easier to transport than conventional masonry buildings and allowed the same moulded parts to be produced repeatedly. Inside, the curved walls and built-in furniture created a continuous, cabin-like room rather than a conventional house divided into rectangular spaces.
The design arrived during the space-age 1960s, when new plastics, prefabrication and futuristic forms were associated with progress. A manufacturing licence was granted to about 30 companies worldwide, according to The Guardian’s 2018 history. Production was international, so examples can appear far from Finland and can have very different owners and uses.

The nine Futuro houses, one by one
Idyllwild, California: the Donaldson Futuro
This mountain example takes its name from Milford Wayne Donaldson, the owner and preservation architect associated with it. Its San Jacinto Mountains setting emphasizes the original logic of the Futuro: a compact retreat that could sit lightly in a landscape and provide a warm refuge in cold or remote conditions. The name “Donaldson Futuro” identifies this particular house; it does not indicate a separate model.
Marston Park, Somerset: a restored rental
Artist Chris Barnes restored the Futuro at Marston Park. Architectural Digest describes it as a holiday rental tucked into a Somerset glade. Barnes has characterized the interior as “a wonderful space to bounce around ideas. Everything about it is a celebration of the imagination.” That description captures why the building appeals beyond its novelty: the circular room changes how people work, sleep and socialize compared with a rectilinear cottage.
Nevlunghamn, Norway: a family summer house
Norwegian design businessman Per Tannum bought this unit in 1971. His family has used it as a summer house, giving the Futuro a long domestic life rather than a museum or commercial role. Ownership histories such as this help explain why some examples are difficult to visit: a Futuro may be a private residence even when photographs circulate widely.

Munich: a museum-lawn landmark
The Munich Futuro stands on the lawn of the Pinakothek der Moderne. Its placement beside a major modern-art institution makes the building legible as design history as well as architecture. Being on an institutional lawn does not automatically mean the pod is open for tours; visitors should confirm the museum’s current policies before planning a special trip.
Canberra: from planetarium to university space
The Canberra example was formerly part of the Canberra Planetarium and Observatory. Architectural Digest reports that it is now used at the University of Canberra as a study, meeting or tutorial space. The change illustrates how a highly specialized 1960s object can be adapted for everyday institutional use without losing its identity.

Deep Creek, Australia: a retreat with landing lights
At Naiko Retreat in Deep Creek, the Futuro is used for spa treatments. Multicoloured lights installed beneath the shell create the visual effect of a landed spacecraft after dark. Christine Crawford, the property’s manager, described the renovation problem this way: “From a construction point of view, there is not a straight edge at all, everything has a curve, so it was quite tricky in that sense.” Curved panels, unusual joints and aging composite materials can make maintenance more demanding than work on a standard cabin.
Rotterdam: a conserved museum object
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen acquired its Rotterdam Futuro in 2007. The article credits conservator Lydia Beerkens and Polyproducts with restoration work. Museum stewardship places the unit in a preservation context: decisions about colour, shell repairs, glazing and interior fittings must balance original appearance with structural safety.

Canterbury, New Zealand: a highly furnished rental
The Canterbury Futuro is described as a vacation rental containing rare pieces by Verner Panton and Luigi Colani, along with an infrared sauna. Those details make it an unusually curated example, combining the Futuro’s original space-age language with later twentieth-century furniture design. Rental status is a reported description, not confirmation that reservations remain available; check the operator directly.
Dombai, Russia: a mountain hotel
Architectural Digest reports that Finnish President Urho Kekkonen gave this Futuro as a gift and that it was delivered to Mount Moussa-Achitara in 1969. It is described as a hotel in the Dombai mountain region. Political history, difficult terrain and changing hospitality operations all make current access especially important to verify locally.

Some of the nine examples are described as rentals or hotels, but the available accounts do not establish that every one is currently bookable. Marston Park and Canterbury are identified as holiday or vacation rentals, while Dombai is described as a hotel. Deep Creek is presented as a retreat used for treatments rather than ordinary overnight accommodation. Other units are private, institutional or museum-associated.
Before travelling, confirm three things with the owner or institution: whether the Futuro still occupies the reported site, whether overnight stays or public visits are offered, and whether access is limited to specific dates or events. A photograph, an old article or a map pin can remain online after a property changes use. Do not assume that a university building, museum-lawn display or private summer house accepts walk-in visitors.

Who designed the Futuro house and why did production stop?
Matti Suuronen designed the Futuro as a portable prefabricated holiday home. Its quick-heating ski-chalet brief shaped the compact volume, central living area and use of moulded composite panels. The design was ambitious because the same shell could, in principle, be manufactured, transported and installed in many countries.
The 1973 oil crisis undermined that business model. Oil-derived plastics and resins were central to the shell, and oil prices rose sharply. The Guardian reports that the resulting material costs helped make production uneconomic. This was a major factor, not a claim that one event alone explains every factory or licensing decision. Changing tastes, transport logistics and the practical difficulty of maintaining curved composite structures also affected the buildings’ long-term prospects.
How many Futuro houses are left?
There is no universally accepted census. Architectural Digest reported in 2022 that 100 Futuro houses were produced and 68 remained. A 2023 Guardian report gave a broader production estimate of 60 to 100 and said about seven were in Australia. A 2018 Guardian account described the total as “100 or so.” These figures are estimates from different publications and dates, not a definitive registry.
The safest conclusion is that dozens survive, spread across several continents, with their condition and accessibility varying widely. Counts can change as privately held units are rediscovered, dismantled, restored or reclassified. When comparing claims, keep the publisher and year attached to the number instead of presenting one figure as final.

Why do these homes still matter to design history?
Futuros compress several twentieth-century ideas into one object: industrial production, plastics technology, mobility, leisure and faith in a futuristic lifestyle. The same qualities that made them exciting also created weaknesses. Their shells were efficient to mould but expensive to repair; their portability enabled global distribution but made ownership histories fragmented; and their novelty attracted photographers even when the interiors were private.
They are also useful reminders that “UFO architecture” is not a single formal movement. A saucer-shaped building might be a restaurant, roadside attraction or later imitation. The nine examples here are identified as Futuros, meaning they belong to Suuronen’s specific prefabricated system. That distinction matters when researching provenance, restoration methods or surviving numbers.

Specialist Futuro archives maintain location information, bibliographies and memorabilia references for people who want to continue researching the houses. A Futuro-themed replica night light is a decorative collectible inspired by the architecture; it is not a building component or a substitute for a full-size home. Availability of any particular retail listing should be checked at the time of purchase, because a listing may be removed or changed.
For serious study, look for books and exhibition material on Suuronen, Finnish design, prefabrication and space-age architecture. Museum records are especially valuable for provenance and conservation details, while owner accounts can explain alterations that a short travel listing omits.
Quick Recap
Planning a visit: a practical checklist
- Identify the exact unit and its reported owner or institution; several countries have more than one Futuro.
- Confirm the current address, operating status and visitor policy directly before travelling.
- Ask whether photography, interior access, overnight stays or guided tours are permitted.
- Check transport and weather conditions for mountain locations such as Idyllwild, Dombai and Deep Creek.
- Treat historic photographs and published counts as dated evidence rather than guarantees of present condition.
