The National Park Service (NPS) documents five houses or farmsteads with detailed Underground Railroad evidence in the material available for this article: the Nathan and Polly Johnson House in New Bedford, Massachusetts; Jackson Homestead in Newton, Massachusetts; the Dr. Nathan Thomas House in Schoolcraft, Michigan; the James and Sophia Clemens Farmstead near Greenville, Ohio; and the John P. Parker House in Ripley, Ohio. NPS records also point to Levi Coffin House in Indiana and John Rankin’s home in Ohio, but the underlying form could not be opened for verification here. That means a responsible account cannot invent three more “top” homes to make a ranked list of ten.
These places illustrate how varied the Underground Railroad was. It was a loose network of people, money, transportation, medical care and local knowledge—not a centrally managed railway with one standard route. Some freedom seekers traveled without assistance, while others received help from Black families, white abolitionists, churches and entire communities. A house connected with antislavery work is not automatically proven to have been a “safe house”; each claim requires documentary evidence.

What it means for a home to be part of the Underground Railroad
NPS’s Network to Freedom recognizes sites, facilities and programs with verifiable connections to Underground Railroad activity. The network is broader than historic houses and now includes more than 900 locations nationwide, according to the NPS listing updated October 9, 2026. The public inventory is updated twice each calendar year, and some location details may be withheld for privacy or security.
Historians distinguish active assistance from a general antislavery opinion. Evidence can include a participant’s memoir, a family account, oral tradition corroborated by other records, local documentation, property history or an official designation. NPS guidance also warns interpreters not to add unverified trapdoors, secret tunnels, crawl spaces or “safe-house” language to a documented story.

The homes below are therefore a documented selection, not a ranking of the ten most important places. The comparison table identifies the kind of evidence and assistance associated with each site without implying that one location mattered more than another.
Five homes with detailed National Park Service documentation
Nathan and Polly Johnson House — New Bedford, Massachusetts
Nathan and Polly Johnson were African American entrepreneurs active in antislavery work. NPS identifies their home as an important Underground Railroad location and says it sheltered multiple families seeking freedom. Its best-known connection is the arrival of Frederick and Anna Douglass after their escape: the Johnsons provided their first free home.
The house became a National Historic Landmark in 2000 and joined the Network to Freedom in 2001. Those designations recognize the documented historical association; they do not by themselves establish that every room or hidden feature served a particular purpose. The NPS historical page does not establish that the building is routinely open for interior visits, so check current official information before planning a stop.
Jackson Homestead — Newton, Massachusetts
Written accounts and oral tradition support the Jackson Homestead’s use as a station. Ellen Jackson, daughter of William and Mary Jackson, recalled that William Bowditch brought a freedom seeker to the house at night. William Jackson hid the man and helped him continue toward Canada. After William’s death, Mary Jackson and her daughters continued assisting freedom seekers.

NPS reproduces Ellen Jackson’s family account:
“the Homestead’s doors stood ever open with a welcome to any of the workers against slavery for as often and as long as suited their convenience or pleasure. The Homestead was one of the Stations of the ‘Under Ground Rail Road’ which was continually helping runaway Slaves from the South to Canada. One night between 12 and one o’clock, I well remember father was awakened by pebbles thrown against his window.”
The house now hosts the Newton History Museum and is described by NPS as open to the public. Hours, admission arrangements and exhibit availability can change, so verify them with the museum before traveling.

Built in 1835, the Dr. Nathan Thomas House was home to Nathan and Pamela Brown Thomas, whom NPS describes as one of Michigan’s most active Underground Railroad families. Their work shows that assistance could involve much more than a concealed overnight stay.
Pamela’s 1892 memoirs describe Nathan providing lodging and medical care while she prepared meals. She estimated that they assisted 1,000 to 1,500 enslaved people between 1840 and 1860. That figure is her personal estimate, quoted by NPS in 2020, rather than an independently verified census. NPS places the Thomases’ onward route through other abolitionists to Detroit and then Canada.

James and Sophia Clemens Farmstead — near Greenville, Ohio
The Clemens farmstead stood in Longtown, an early Black settlement near Greenville. NPS identifies James and Sophia Clemens as a free Black couple who operated a stop and connects their work to the settlement’s broader community-building efforts. Historical research cited by NPS links Longtown to Underground Railroad activity.
This example is important because it places Underground Railroad work in a Black community rather than reducing the story to isolated white conductors. Neighbors, relatives and local institutions could provide food, shelter, information and transportation. The farmstead is private property and is not open to the public. Do not enter or attempt an unscheduled visit.
John P. Parker House — Ripley, Ohio
John P. Parker was a major antislavery figure whose Underground Railroad role is supported by local records and autobiographical reminiscences. His home is a National Historic Landmark and a Network to Freedom site.

NPS has conducted a special resource study assessing possible inclusion in the national park system. A study is not a park-unit designation; the house has not thereby become a national park site. Visitor access can change, so obtain current information directly from the John P. Parker Historical Society before making travel plans.

Two names in NPS records that still need verification
Levi Coffin House — Fountain City, Indiana
An NPS Form 10-900 search-result excerpt identifies the Levi Coffin House in Fountain City in the context of an Underground Railroad theme study. The PDF itself was not available for examination, so the excerpt does not provide enough verified detail here to describe the house’s specific activities, designation history or current visitor status. Consult the complete official record before treating this as a fully documented profile or planning a visit.

John Rankin’s home — Ohio
The same NPS search-result material refers to John Rankin’s home in Ohio in the theme-study context. Without the underlying form, the exact official site name, documentary basis and present access cannot be confirmed from the available record. It should remain a lead for further checking, not a filled-out tenth entry.
How historians decide whether a house was a stop
A credible connection normally rests on several questions:
Best Value
- 2 Inch Angled Paint Brush for Precision Cutting-In – Designed for clean, sharp lines around trim, baseboards, ceilings, corners, and detailed edge work. The perfect size for control and coverage.
- Value 3-Pack for Pros & DIY Projects – Includes three professional 2-inch angled sash brushes — ideal for contractors, remodelers, and homeowners tackling multiple rooms or repeat paint jobs.
- Smooth Results on Walls, Trim & Cabinets – Great for interior wall painting, cabinet edges, furniture projects, and trim work where a smooth finish and crisp control matter most.
- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
- Who provided assistance? The record should identify a person, family or community rather than relying only on a later legend.
- What kind of help is documented? Lodging, food, medical treatment, transportation, money, directions or communication are different forms of assistance and should be described precisely.
- When did it occur? A date range links the activity to slavery, escape and abolitionist networks rather than to a much later commemoration.
- What is the source? Memoirs and family recollections can be valuable while still containing estimates or details that cannot be independently checked.
- Is the physical house the same place? Preservation status and historic designation concern the property’s documented association; they do not prove that every architectural feature is original or used in an escape.
This standard explains why Pamela Thomas’s 1,000-to-1,500 figure remains attributed to her, why Ellen Jackson’s account is presented as a family witness’s recollection, and why the Coffin and Rankin references are not expanded beyond what the available record establishes.
Can you visit Underground Railroad homes?
Sometimes, but access is site-specific. The Jackson Homestead is described by NPS as a public museum. The Clemens Farmstead is explicitly private and closed to visitors. The Johnson House’s historical page does not establish regular interior access, and current arrangements for the Thomas and Parker homes should be confirmed with their official contacts. Never assume that a Network to Freedom listing means a house operates as a museum.

Why a “top ten” ranking would mislead
The Underground Railroad had no central administration that could certify a single route or rank its stations. NPS’s Network to Freedom is an inventory of verifiable connections, not a league table. A house may be historically significant because of a famous participant, because it preserves an unusually rich record, or because it represents collective work in a Black settlement; those are different criteria.
The five detailed examples show that range: the Johnsons offered a first free home to a newly escaped couple; the Jacksons hid and forwarded a freedom seeker; the Thomases combined medicine, meals and lodging; the Clemenses worked within a Black community; and Parker’s home is tied to a nationally recognized activist. Treating them as interchangeable “safe houses” would erase those differences.
If you need a complete list of ten verified homes, use the current Network to Freedom database and inspect each site’s individual documentation. The evidence summarized here supports five developed profiles and two additional names that require confirmation, not three invented entries.
