What the vote is actually deciding
Kristi Linauer’s January 21, 2014 post is a design poll, not a completed tutorial. She had purchased two IKEA RAST three-drawer chests for a bedroom project and wanted readers to decide which reference piece should guide the transformation. No finished bedside tables, construction sequence, paint formula, measured cutting plan or final result is documented in that post.
That distinction matters if you are searching for an “IKEA RAST bedside table hack.” The article presents two visual briefs that could be applied to the same pair of chests; it does not establish that either version was built. The useful choice is therefore about the character you want your nightstands to have, not about selecting between two proven sets of instructions.
Linauer’s commitment is unusually clear: “But in this case, I’ll actually go with the majority vote, without question.” The vote is consequently part of the project itself. Readers are choosing the design language before any makeover details are settled.
The common starting point: two RAST chests
Both concepts begin with two IKEA RAST three-drawer chests intended for use as a pair of bedside tables. IKEA’s current US listing identifies the RAST as a pine dresser, article number 705.821.65. The listed overall dimensions are 24 3/8 inches wide, 13 3/4 inches deep and 26 3/4 inches high.

The current construction description says the solid-pine components are combined with fiberboard for the back and drawer bottoms. Those specifications belong to the present US listing and may not match every detail of the units sold in 2014, so measure the chests you actually own before planning trim, feet or hardware.
IKEA also states that a wall-anchoring kit is included and warns that the dresser must be securely anchored. For a current build, follow the product instructions and choose fasteners appropriate for your wall type. A pair of bedside chests can be pulled or tipped, especially when drawers are opened, so anchoring is a safety requirement rather than a decorative option. Option one: a modern Jacqui-inspired table
Linauer’s original inspiration was the Bungalow 5 Jacqui three-drawer side table. She describes its appeal in three visual cues: a modern overall look, brass ring pulls and quirky feet. She had already bought brass ring pulls for the project, which makes hardware a particularly concrete part of this direction rather than a hypothetical detail.

What this direction communicates
- Modern structure: The RAST’s simple, rectangular case would remain the visual base while the added feet and hardware provide a more designed silhouette.
- Jewelry-like hardware: Ring pulls in a brass finish would create a focal point on each drawer front and supply the warm metallic note associated with the Jacqui reference.
- Personality at floor level: The “quirky feet” are not a minor detail. They change the way the chest meets the floor and can make a basic box read as a deliberate furniture piece.
This is the cleaner of the two briefs. Its identity depends on proportion and a few high-impact additions rather than on an ornate surface treatment. If you prefer a nightstand that looks tailored, contemporary and restrained, the Jacqui direction gives the RAST a clear path without asking it to imitate a heavily decorated chest.

Questions to settle before choosing it
- Will the selected feet raise the drawer fronts high enough to clear the floor and any base trim?
- Are the brass ring pulls sized and spaced for the existing drawer fronts, or will their placement require new holes?
- Does the final color need to contrast with the brass, or should it act as a quiet background for the hardware?
The source does not specify foot dimensions, pull size, hole spacing or a finish recipe. Those decisions remain part of the eventual design work.
Option two: a scalloped Kira-inspired table
The second reference appeared later, when Linauer encountered the Grandin Road Kira Chest. She was drawn to its scalloped and scrolly qualities, its nailhead trim and the finish shown in the reference. She also said she would probably choose a more colorful finish so the bedside table would not blend into the linen draperies behind it.
What this direction communicates
- Ornamental shape: Scallops and scrolling introduce curves and decoration that the plain RAST does not have by itself.
- Textural edging: Nailhead trim adds a repeat pattern around an edge or panel, giving the case a more upholstered or embellished impression.
- Color as separation: Linauer’s proposed brighter finish is a deliberate response to the room. The objective is contrast with the linen draperies, not simply reproducing the reference chest’s shown finish.
This route is more decorative and more visibly transformed. It suits a room where the bedside tables should act as accent pieces rather than disappear into a neutral scheme. Because the scalloped, scrolly treatment and nailhead trim carry much of the identity, the color can be chosen for the room instead of treated as an afterthought.

- Which edges can accept nailhead trim without interfering with drawer movement or wall clearance?
- How bright should the color be in relation to the linen draperies and the rest of the bedroom?

Why the two reference prices should not decide your vote
The 2014 post cites the Bungalow 5 Jacqui three-drawer side table at $910, credited there to Layla Grayce, and the Grandin Road Kira Chest at $349. These are historical retail figures reported in that 2014 article, not current quotes, inflation-adjusted comparisons or prices for the materials needed to reproduce either look.
They are useful only as context for the inspiration pieces’ original positioning. They do not tell you what a RAST makeover will cost, and they should not be read as evidence that one design is cheaper to build. The post gives no materials list or quantities for either proposed hack.

Choose Jacqui if the room needs edited modern contrast
Pick the Jacqui brief when you want the RAST’s rectangular geometry to stay legible and the upgrade to come from hardware and the base. Brass ring pulls and unusual feet create recognizable focal points while preserving a relatively uncluttered outline. This approach is also the more natural match for a room that already has modern furniture, straight lines or limited ornament.

Use the existing room as the tie-breaker
Look at the elements that cannot easily change: the drapery, headboard, flooring and other large surfaces. If those pieces are quiet and linear, the Kira-inspired decoration can add needed movement. If the room already has pattern or ornate accessories, the Jacqui-inspired restraint may keep the pair from becoming visually busy.

Whichever direction wins, the current RAST listing confirms that the main components are pine, with fiberboard used for the back and drawer bottoms.
