Credit for AI-generated music depends on what “credit” means. Under the U.S. Copyright Office’s January 2025 guidance, a song generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, and a prompt alone does not make the prompter its author. A human may be credited for original lyrics, melody, arrangement, performance, or other human-authored material; in a mixed work, only the human-authored parts may be protected. Platform licenses and attribution rules can separately determine how you may use a track, but they do not by themselves settle who authored copyrightable material.
What Kind Of Credit Are You Asking About?
- Authorship: Who made the copyrightable human contribution, if any? AI output alone does not make the person who typed a prompt its author under the Copyright Office guidance.
- Tool attribution: Does the service require you to name it when sharing or using a generated track? Tunee’s free music requires attribution for personal projects. Its site also describes a full commercial license for generated songs and videos, so check the terms for the plan and track you use.
- Release credits: What names and roles appear in a distributor’s or streaming service’s metadata? Spotify says it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits; that is transparency metadata, not a ruling on copyright authorship.
- Permission to use: Does your plan give you permission to use the track commercially? That is a licensing question. A commercial-use license does not automatically establish that an AI-only track is copyrightable.
When Can A Human Claim Authorship?
The relevant question is what you contributed to the finished music, not how elaborate your prompt was. A prompt describing a mood, genre, instruments, tempo, or song structure is still a prompt; the Copyright Office says prompts alone do not make the user an author. Original lyrics or musical material that you wrote, performed, or arranged may be human-authored parts of a mixed work. The supplied guidance does not set a universal threshold for how much editing or arrangement is enough, so do not assume that selecting a generation, changing a few settings, or exporting stems establishes authorship.
If you register a work in the United States that contains more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material, the Copyright Office says to disclose that material and describe the human author’s contribution. Its guidance is specific to U.S. copyright registration; rules and outcomes elsewhere may differ.

How To Keep Credits Accurate In Your Workflow
- Separate your material from generated material. Save your original lyrics, melodies, recordings, and arrangement notes separately from prompts and generated audio. Keep dated versions so you can describe what you made.
- Record the service and plan. Note which product and subscription tier produced the track, along with the date and any applicable license or attribution terms. Terms can vary by plan, and a product’s broad marketing statement may need to be read alongside its plan details.
- Describe contributions precisely. Credit yourself for work you actually created, such as lyrics or a performed part. Do not present an AI-generated vocal or composition as a human performance or composition by you.
- Check release metadata and disclosure requirements. Before uploading, review the distributor’s current fields and the platform’s current AI disclosure rules. Spotify has announced support for DDEX AI disclosures in credits; YouTube requires disclosure for realistic altered or synthetic content that could be mistaken for a real person’s performance.
- Check consent for identifiable voices and source material. Get appropriate consent before using someone’s voice or uploading material you do not have rights to use, and check the generation service’s terms. Spotify says vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it.

These service terms address usage rights or attribution, not whether a particular output qualifies for copyright protection. Check the current terms for your plan before release, especially if you will distribute, monetize, or use the music in client work.

When A Track Uses A Voice, Cover, Or Sample
Consent and service terms matter separately from credit. Do not treat a voice-generation or upload feature as permission to imitate a real artist, use a recording, or release a cover. Spotify’s stated policy allows vocal impersonation only with the impersonated artist’s authorization. What Credit Cannot Guarantee
Adding a name to a credit field, disclosing AI use, or receiving a commercial license does not by itself prove copyright authorship. Conversely, the Copyright Office’s U.S. guidance does not determine a platform’s license, a distributor’s metadata requirements, or the rules in another country. For a release, keep a clear record of human contributions, follow the license for the plan you used, and describe AI involvement accurately wherever the distributor or service asks.
