Shiva is a major Hindu deity and the central focus of Shaivism, one of the principal forms of modern Hinduism. He is understood and represented in varied ways across Hindu traditions, so no single image or description captures every belief about him.
Who is Lord Shiva?
Shiva is a major deity in Hinduism. Shaivism is the broad tradition centered on worship of Shiva; it includes diverse movements rather than one uniform institution. Hindu communities and individuals may understand and worship Shiva in different ways, and Hinduism as a whole encompasses a range of traditions.

Later texts and traditions develop further understandings of Shiva, with the Shvetashvatara Upanishad and the Sanskrit epics, including the Mahabharata and Ramayana, among the contexts relevant to his religious history. These connections are best understood as a broad historical outline, not a single, simple origin story. Encyclopaedia Britannica’s overview of Shaivism describes this wider context.
How did ideas about Shiva develop?
Shiva’s place in Hindu traditions has been shaped by texts, worship, and artistic representation over time. The Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art notes that a new understanding of Shiva emerged in texts called the Puranas between 300 and 700 CE. Puranas recount divine narratives; this date range describes an important period in the museum’s overview, not the beginning and end of every Puranic text or interpretation. The Smithsonian’s Shiva resource offers an introduction to these stories and representations.

How is Shiva represented in art?
Shiva appears in hymns, religious narratives, ritual, visual art, dance, theater, and film. The variety matters: an artwork presents one aspect or interpretation, not a complete definition of Shiva for all Hindus.
Nataraja: Shiva as Lord of the Dance
Nataraja means Shiva as Lord of the Dance. This widely recognized form represents Shiva through movement and visual symbolism. It is one important artistic representation among many, rather than the only way Shiva is pictured or understood. The Smithsonian discusses Nataraja alongside other ways Shiva has been represented in art and culture.
