Benjamin Moore Classic Gray OC-23 is the gray that decorating writer Kristi Linauer chose for her breakfast room after rejecting neutrals that looked too green, too purple, or too dark. She described it as a “barely-there light neutral.” Her planned partner was white linen drapery, potentially finished with real trim, to keep the small room light and airy.

That is a useful starting point, not a universal color verdict. Gray changes with window direction, daylight, bulbs, surrounding finishes, and personal taste. Test Classic Gray in your own room before buying enough paint, and evaluate the curtain fabric in the same light before committing to a finished treatment.

The color Linauer selected

In her 2017 decorating update, Kristi Linauer identified Benjamin Moore Classic Gray OC-23 as the light neutral she wanted for her breakfast room. She had already dismissed other pale colors because they appeared too green, too purple, or simply too dark in her space. Her own description is the right way to understand the choice: “I wanted a barely-there light neutral, and I’m pretty sure the one that perfectly fits the bill is Classic Gray.”

Classic Gray is therefore best read as an example of a design goal—an almost weightless backdrop—rather than proof that one gray performs identically in every home. A paint chip, a screen image, and a photograph of Linauer’s room cannot account for your windows, bulbs, flooring, cabinetry, furniture, or neighboring colors.

What “barely there” means in a room

A very light neutral can provide more separation than a stark white wall while preserving an open feeling. It may soften the contrast between white trim and the wall, give wood floors a calmer setting, and allow curtains or artwork to become the visual focus. The effect depends on contrast: a pale wall can look noticeably gray beside bright white fabric, but nearly white beside a deeper floor or colorful furnishings.

If your goal is a room that feels airy rather than dramatically gray, Classic Gray belongs on the first sample board to test. If you want a clearly defined gray wall, a warmer, darker, or more saturated option may better match your desired mood.

Why the same gray can look different

Benjamin Moore’s color guidance frames the central question as, “What is the ‘perfect gray?’” Its answer is that lighting determines how a gray reads. The manufacturer notes that room direction, artificial light, and personal preference all affect the result. That is why a color that looks neutral in one breakfast room can reveal a blue, green, beige, or warmer cast somewhere else.

Northern exposure

Benjamin Moore says, “A room with northern exposure tends to reveal more of a paint color’s blue or green undertones, so many homeowners opt for a warmer gray in those spaces.” Northern daylight is often cooler, so inspect Classic Gray at the times you use the room instead of judging it only under a store’s lighting.

Other orientations and changing daylight

South-, east-, and west-facing windows produce different color conditions throughout the day. Morning light, afternoon light, overcast skies, and sunset light can each alter the wall’s appearance. The point is not to assign a fixed undertone to your room from its compass direction; it is to observe the actual light that reaches the walls.

Artificial light and surrounding finishes

Installed bulbs can push a pale neutral warmer or cooler after dark. White trim, cream upholstery, yellow-toned wood, stone, metal, and adjacent paint colors also influence what your eye notices. A gray can appear cleaner beside a warm beige and warmer beside a cool white. Evaluate the sample beside the finishes that will remain in the room, not against an empty wall alone.

How to test Classic Gray before painting

Benjamin Moore recommends observing samples in the actual space in both natural and artificial lighting. A movable board is especially useful when a room has a northern exposure or several distinct light conditions.

  1. Choose a real sample. Obtain a brush-on sample of Classic Gray OC-23 rather than relying only on a printed card or digital image. Keep the color name and code with the board so it cannot be confused with another neutral.
  2. Paint a foam poster board. Apply the sample to a foam poster board, covering enough area to judge the color without the board’s white surface dominating your perception. Let the sample dry according to the paint instructions before making a decision.
  3. Move the board around the room. Place it on each wall, near the window, in a corner, beside trim, and near the floor or cabinetry. A portable board exposes changes that a single wall test can miss.
  4. Check daylight. Look at the board in the morning, midday, and later afternoon when practical. Note whether the neutral stays soft, turns noticeably cool, or picks up a green or blue cast.
  5. Check the installed bulbs. Turn on the room’s actual fixtures after dark. Do not substitute a showroom lamp; the bulb type and shade in your home are part of the color environment.
  6. Compare against permanent materials. Hold the board beside flooring, counters, furniture, window trim, and the white fabric or curtain sample you are considering. Record which combinations feel balanced rather than judging the paint in isolation.
  7. Make the quantity decision last. Buy the full paint amount only after the dried sample looks acceptable through the room’s real daily lighting cycle.

For a small room, a movable foam board also lets you compare the wall color where the planned draperies will hang. That matters because a bright white textile can make a pale gray wall appear more visibly colored by contrast.

How to compare Classic Gray with other neutrals

No single alternative is established as better than Classic Gray. Compare samples using the same criteria so the decision reflects your room and the atmosphere you want.

Decision axis What to inspect Question to ask
Undertone Warm beige, blue, green, or a more neutral appearance under your light Does the cast work with the floor, furniture, and trim?
Natural light Changes from morning through afternoon and under overcast skies Does the color remain comfortable during the hours you use the room?
Artificial light How the dried sample looks with the room’s installed bulbs Does it become too yellow, blue, or dull after dark?
Relative lightness Contrast between the wall, ceiling, trim, cabinetry, and furnishings Do you want the wall to recede or to read as a clear gray feature?
Mood Overall impression: airy, cozy, crisp, modern, or subdued Does the sample create the feeling you intended?

Warm grays and greiges

Benjamin Moore describes warm grays and greiges as capable of creating a cozier impression. They may coordinate more easily with warm wood, cream upholstery, or beige stone, but they can look less crisp beside a blue-white textile. Compare one beside Classic Gray rather than deciding from its label.

Cool, blue- or green-based grays

Cooler grays can support a more modern feeling, according to Benjamin Moore, but northern light may make their blue or green undertones more apparent. If your room already contains cool stone, metal, or blue accents, that shift may be intentional; if the room’s finishes are warm, it may feel discordant.

White and near-white options

A white wall can maximize brightness, while a pale gray may provide a subtle layer of contrast. Put the white you are considering beside Classic Gray and your trim. The comparison should happen on large, dried samples in the room, because a small chip cannot show the same relationship.

Planning the white-curtain look

Linauer’s planned treatment was specific in color and material: “I have my heart set on white. White linen, to be exact.” She was also interested in adding actual trim to the draperies for a more finished appearance. The stated design objective was a light, airy small room.

The source describes an intended project and visual inspiration; it does not establish that the breakfast-room curtains were completed, nor does it identify a tested panel, retailer, lining, opacity rating, or installation method. Treat white linen as a direction for your own design decisions, not as a documented product recommendation.

Fabric and texture

Linen can introduce visible weave and softness against a smooth painted wall. A linen-look fabric may create a similar visual idea with a different hand, drape, or care requirement. Request a physical swatch when possible and view it beside the dried paint sample. Online white swatches can hide differences in warmth and texture.

Choosing the white

“White” includes many undertones. A warm white panel may harmonize with warm flooring but make a cool gray appear bluer. A crisp, cooler white may increase contrast and make the wall color more noticeable. Compare the curtain white with the room’s trim, ceiling, upholstery, and daylight before selecting it.

Opacity and visual weight

Decide how much light you want to preserve. A lighter, more translucent panel can support the airy goal, while a lined or denser treatment may look heavier and change the room’s daytime brightness. The available evidence does not provide a measured light-blocking result for any particular fabric, so assess opacity by holding the swatch near the window or viewing a full-size sample in place.

Trim as an accent

Actual trim can give a simple white panel a tailored edge and introduce a deliberate line around the window. Match its color and scale to existing details rather than assuming more trim is always better. Lay a trim sample over the linen swatch and view both against the wall board; the relationship can look different at window height than on a tabletop.

Making the wall-and-curtain combination coherent

Use contrast deliberately

Classic Gray and white linen may be close in value, which helps maintain a quiet backdrop. If the combination looks flat, contrast can come from texture, trim, hardware, wood, or artwork rather than from choosing a much darker wall. If it looks too stark, a warmer textile or softer trim may reduce the jump between surfaces.

Account for the window’s position

Place the sample board where the curtain will actually cover or filter light. A wall that receives direct sun can read differently from the wall beside it. Observe the board with the window uncovered and with the fabric held in front of it, because the textile changes the light reaching the painted surface.

Coordinate with the rest of a small room

In a compact breakfast room, large surfaces carry visual weight. Keep a list of the finishes that cannot change—flooring, table, built-ins, counters, and trim—and test the paint and curtain samples against all of them. The airy effect comes from the complete set of relationships, not from the paint name alone.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing from a screen: Digital color can vary with display settings and surrounding pixels. Use a physical sample in the room.
  • Testing one tiny patch: A small patch is easily overwhelmed by the existing wall color. A broad foam-board sample gives your eye more useful information and can be moved.
  • Ignoring after-dark lighting: A color that works in daylight may shift under the bulbs you use at dinner. Include those fixtures in the test.
  • Assuming “gray” predicts undertone: Labels do not tell you how a color will interact with northern light, flooring, or trim. Compare dried samples side by side.
  • Buying curtains before the paint is settled: White linen can make a very light wall look more colored by contrast. Select or approve the fabric with the final paint sample present.
  • Treating a personal project as a performance test: Linauer’s choice records her preference and design intent, not a controlled comparison or universal ranking of grays.
  • Specifying a finished treatment too early: The source does not establish a particular panel, lining, hardware system, or completed installation. Confirm dimensions, fullness, mounting, care, and opacity for your own window.

A practical decision path

  1. Define the target mood. Write down whether you want an almost-white, airy background or a more evident gray with cozy or modern character.
  2. Start with Classic Gray OC-23. It is a logical candidate when “barely there” is the goal, based on Linauer’s experience.
  3. Add comparison samples by undertone. Include at least one warmer neutral and one cooler gray if your furnishings or window direction make the choice uncertain.
  4. Use movable boards. Paint each sample on foam poster board and inspect them in every important position, under daylight and installed bulbs.
  5. Evaluate the complete palette. Place the boards beside flooring, furniture, trim, and a white linen or linen-look swatch.
  6. Choose the fabric direction. Decide on white tone, texture, opacity, and any trim only after you know how the selected wall color behaves in the room.
  7. Commit when the evidence is consistent. Proceed when the dried paint and curtain swatch look acceptable across the lighting conditions that matter to your household.

Who should—and should not—start with Classic Gray

Start with Classic Gray if you want a very light neutral, prefer a quiet backdrop, and are willing to sample it against your room’s actual finishes. It is especially relevant when the planned scheme includes white linen and a light, airy feeling.

Do not assume it will be the right choice if you need a strong gray statement, if your room’s northern light exaggerates cool undertones, or if your furnishings require a distinctly warm beige-gray. In those cases, use the same sample process with warmer or cooler alternatives and let the room—not the color name—decide.
