Carlo Scarpa’s Olivetti Showroom is significant because it makes a very small commercial interior operate like a piece of architecture, sculpture and exhibition design at once. In the Procuratie Vecchie beside Piazza San Marco, Scarpa connected Olivetti’s modern machines to Venice through exacting stonework, timber, metal, a controlled sequence of levels and a deliberately framed view of the square.
The result is not simply a shop preserved from the 1950s. It is a compact demonstration of how a corporate commission can respect a historic setting without imitating it, and how display, circulation and material detail can carry meaning equal to the objects on sale.

A modern company inserted into Venice’s historic center
Adriano Olivetti commissioned the showroom as a public-facing company statement: a refined place in Venice’s principal square for displaying typewriters and calculating machines. The Italian Ministry of Culture’s Census of Italian Architecture since 1945 identifies the project as “NEGOZIO OLIVETTI,” with Carlo Scarpa as principal author and project and execution dates of 1957–1958.
The commission had an unusually demanding setting. The shop occupies part of the Procuratie Vecchie, the long historic building forming one side of Piazza San Marco. Scarpa therefore had to make a contemporary interior inside an existing Venetian shell, visible to one of the city’s most heavily observed public spaces. The design’s achievement is a measured relationship: Olivetti’s industrial modernity is unmistakable, yet the interior belongs to the architectural and craft culture of Venice.

Architecture that makes visitors move and look
The showroom is experienced as a sequence rather than as one undifferentiated retail room. A stair, mezzanine and suspended walkways divide the visual field and reveal the space in stages. Objects appear at different heights, while the route repeatedly redirects attention toward surfaces, structural joints, sculpture and the square beyond. Scarpa turns circulation into the main design instrument.
Craft used as a form of communication
Aurisina stone, Istrian stone, African teak, rosewood, metals, Venetian plaster and mosaic-related techniques establish a tactile setting for machines associated with precision and efficiency. The materials do not function as decorative wrapping. Their changes in color, grain, weight and finish tell visitors that the showroom is a crafted environment, not a generic sales floor.
Where is the Olivetti Showroom?
The Negozio Olivetti is at Piazza San Marco 101, Venice, under the portico of the Procuratie Vecchie. FAI describes it as a small place beneath that portico, inaugurated in 1957. Its position puts the entrance directly into the visual and pedestrian intensity of Piazza San Marco rather than on a secondary street.
The Ministry’s architectural census records the interior as approximately 21 metres long, 5 metres wide and about 4 metres high. Those proportions explain much of Scarpa’s strategy: the room is long enough for a procession but too narrow for a conventional department-store layout, so height, overlap and framed sightlines become essential.

How Scarpa organized the narrow interior
The frontage establishes a threshold
Broad display windows and Istrian stone mark the street-facing edge. From the square, the shop reads as an open invitation to look inward, but the stone threshold also announces that the visitor is entering a deliberately composed interior. The frontage is neither a neutral glass box nor a theatrical façade detached from the building around it.
An open floor keeps the room legible
The principal display area remains comparatively open. Rather than filling the available width with permanent fixtures, Scarpa lets the floor, stair, elevated elements and objects remain visually distinct. This restraint matters in a room only about five metres wide: too many cabinets would have destroyed the sense of depth and made the architecture disappear behind merchandise.

The stair is both structure and sculpture
A stone stair leads upward in a composition of individually shaped, offset steps. The steps do not behave like a standard straight flight inserted for convenience; their shifts make the ascent an event that can be read from below and from the mezzanine. FAI’s accessibility information also identifies the suspended stair as one of the defining features of the site.
At the top, the stair ends in a framed view toward the portico and Piazza San Marco. That ending is crucial. The route does not terminate only at an office or another display case; it reconnects the visitor with the public setting that gives the commission its meaning.
Mezzanine and suspended walkways create a second reading
The upper level contains office areas and part of the display. Two suspended walkways cross the volume, allowing visitors to look down onto the machines and the material floor while also seeing the room’s joints and edges at close range. From below, the walkways read as precise horizontal lines; from above, they make the narrow plan intelligible as a layered section.
This arrangement allows exhibition and business functions to coexist. Olivetti could present products in a setting that felt open and prestigious while retaining working areas above. Scarpa did not conceal the practical program; he made its vertical organization part of the visitor’s understanding of the company.

Stone, timber and metal
The documented palette includes Aurisina stone, Istrian stone at the frontage, African teak, rosewood, metal and other stone elements. These materials produce deliberate contrasts: heavy mineral surfaces against warm wood, polished or reflective metal against matte plaster, and finely joined components against the rougher visual memory of Venice’s masonry.
Because the room is small and the display floor is mostly open, visitors can read these materials without a forest of fixtures interrupting them. Scarpa’s detailing is therefore not background decoration; it is one of the showroom’s principal exhibits.

The black marble basin and Alberto Viani’s “Nudo”
The Ministry’s census identifies a black marble basin beneath Alberto Viani’s gilded bronze Nudo. This pairing creates a concentrated visual and symbolic focus within the route. The dark basin provides a stable horizontal plane, while the gilded figure introduces a luminous sculptural presence distinct from the mechanical products around it.
The sculpture also clarifies Scarpa’s refusal to treat the showroom as a simple product container. Art, architecture and merchandise occupy the same carefully measured field, each remaining identifiable rather than being blended into an undifferentiated luxury atmosphere.

Venetian plaster and mosaic traditions are part of the documented material language, but the interior does not reproduce a historic room. Scarpa extracts techniques and sensibilities associated with Venice—surface richness, stone craft, mosaic precision—and reworks them for a mid-century commercial purpose. The result acknowledges the city through construction and material intelligence instead of through pasted-on ornament.
What was the showroom meant to display?
FAI describes Olivetti’s brief as a showroom for typewriters and calculating machines. Those products were designed to communicate clarity, portability and technical progress. Scarpa’s interior gives them a setting in which their proportions and surfaces can be inspected from several distances: across the open floor, beside the stair, and from the elevated walkways.
The architecture also gives the objects a civic stage. A visitor entering from Piazza San Marco encounters a company presenting itself in one of Venice’s most prominent urban rooms. The showroom functioned as what FAI calls a company calling card: a demonstration of corporate identity through design, not merely through a sign or a sales pitch.
What happened to the showroom after Olivetti?
Closure and temporary commercial use
The original Olivetti business closed in 1997. The space was subsequently used for a period as a shop selling tourist goods, a change that separated the interior from the purpose for which Scarpa designed it.

Restoration and FAI management
Generali, the property owner, entrusted the property to FAI in 2011 so that it could be restored and opened to the public. FAI reports that Olivetti donated historic typewriters and calculating machines for the display, including the well-known Lettera 22. The present installation therefore recalls the showroom’s original mid-century role while preserving the room as a heritage interior rather than reviving it as a working retail outlet.
The restoration is important because Scarpa’s work depends on relationships among materials, levels and objects. Preserving isolated surfaces without the route, or preserving machines without the architectural setting, would have weakened the design’s central idea. Public management keeps those elements available as one composition.

A visit is best understood as a short architectural itinerary. The exact display can change as conservation and interpretation develop, but the documented sequence includes these principal experiences:
- The portico and windows: From Piazza San Marco, broad windows and the stone frontage establish the transition from public square to crafted interior.
- The open display floor: Historic Olivetti machines, including a Lettera 22, occupy a room where the architecture remains visible around them.
- The sculpted stair: Individually shaped stone steps shift as they rise, making movement and construction part of the exhibition.
- The mezzanine and walkways: Elevated routes reveal office areas, additional machines and a different view back across the narrow volume.
- The framed view outward: The stair’s upper termination directs attention toward the portico and Piazza San Marco, reconnecting the interior with Venice.
- The black marble basin and gilded bronze: Alberto Viani’s Nudo provides a distinct sculptural focus within the material sequence.
FAI’s accessibility information specifically identifies the suspended stair and upper-level historic machines as defining elements. Visitors who need current information about mobility, assistance or route conditions should consult FAI before travelling, because practical arrangements can change.
How can you visit today?
FAI currently lists the Negozio Olivetti as open to the public at Piazza San Marco 101. The available sources do not establish fixed opening hours, ticket prices or a permanent access schedule. Check the official FAI venue page before a visit for current hours, admission, booking requirements and accessibility conditions.
That qualification is especially important for a small heritage interior. Capacity, conservation work, special programming or seasonal arrangements can affect entry even when the site remains publicly managed. The address and public status are established; the practical details should be verified close to the date of travel.

How to read Scarpa’s design as an architectural work
1. Context
Ask how a mid-century corporate identity enters a historic Venetian building without becoming either invisible or aggressively separate. Scarpa’s answer is a contemporary interior whose materials and proportions acknowledge the city while maintaining Olivetti’s modern purpose.
2. Movement
Follow the route rather than judging the room from the entrance alone. The stair, mezzanine and suspended walkways make the visitor’s changing position the means by which the design unfolds.

3. Display
Notice how machines are not isolated on anonymous plinths. Their reading depends on the open floor, elevated views, timber and stone surfaces, and the intervals Scarpa leaves around them.
4. Craft
Look at junctions, edges and changes of material. Aurisina stone, teak, rosewood, metal, plaster and mosaic-related work are persuasive because they are assembled with precision at close range, not because they merely signal expense.
5. Conservation and use
Consider the difference between the showroom’s original commercial life, its post-1997 tourist-goods phase and its public heritage role after 2011. The present experience is shaped by both Scarpa’s design and the decisions that allowed the room to survive as a legible whole.
Why the Olivetti Showroom still matters
The showroom demonstrates that a small interior can carry an unusually large architectural argument. Scarpa transformed a narrow space in the Procuratie Vecchie into a sequence of thresholds, surfaces, levels and views that links industrial design with Venice’s historic fabric. The machines matter, but so do the stone stair, suspended walkways, black marble basin, gilded sculpture and the final sightline back to Piazza San Marco.

It is simultaneously a preserved Olivetti setting, a document of Scarpa’s mature craft, an example of adaptive work inside a historic building and a public lesson in how display architecture can shape perception. FAI’s stewardship makes the space available for direct study, while the Ministry’s record fixes its authorship, dimensions and dates. Together, those facts explain why the Olivetti Showroom remains one of Venice’s clearest demonstrations of modern architecture working through, rather than against, historical context.
