Why Cyberpunk 2077’s Artists Chose Its Famous Yellow

Cyberpunk 2077’s artists chose yellow as a memorable, fresh signature that could distinguish the game from familiar red-and-blue cyberpunk imagery.

Cyberpunk 2077’s yellow was chosen as a memorable signature color that would give the game a fresh identity—not because the artists said it was needed for navigation or another technical purpose. Lead environment artist Michał Janiszewski contrasted yellow with the red and blue he said people commonly associate with cyberpunk, and described the goal as standing apart from familiar genre imagery.

Why did Cyberpunk 2077 use yellow instead of red and blue?

At the Digital Dragons games conference, lead environment artist Michał Janiszewski explained that the team wanted a color that was distinctive, easy to remember, and different from the palette many people connect with cyberpunk. Game World Observer reported his remarks on May 25, 2022, and StopGame also attributed the explanation to him.

As quoted by Game World Observer, Janiszewski said: “Most people, when they are thinking about cyberpunk, it is like a red color, a bit of blue,” then explained, “but we wanted to have something new, something fresh; that’s why we picked the yellow color. It is new, it is like ‘California style’.” The account links to an original IGN article, but the quotation here is attributed to Game World Observer’s report.

What does the Coca-Cola bottle have to do with the color?

Janiszewski reportedly used the Coca-Cola glass bottle as an example of industrial design that is recognizable around the world. The analogy helps explain the aim: a clear visual signature people could recognize, rather than a color chosen only to match existing cyberpunk conventions. StopGame likewise reports that the team wanted the game to stand apart from familiar influences such as Blade Runner and Judge Dredd, not read simply as an homage.

How does yellow fit the game’s visual design?

CD Projekt RED’s official visual-style post presents distinct styles as part of the game’s world, including Kitsch, labelled “Style over Substance.” That is useful context for treating appearance as deliberate worldbuilding, but it does not give a separate technical explanation for the yellow.

A later CD Projekt RED level-design transcript discusses making visual cues and guidance fit a game’s artistic vision and, when possible, feel as though they belong in the world. It does not identify the yellow brand color as a navigation marker, so the two ideas should not be conflated.

What the artists’ explanation does—and does not—establish

  • Intent: Yellow was meant to be memorable and communicate a distinct identity.
  • Contrast: Janiszewski described red and blue as common cyberpunk associations and said the team wanted something fresh.
  • Recognition: The Coca-Cola bottle served as a reported example of distinctive, recognizable design.
  • Not established: The cited accounts do not identify formal competing color options or claim that yellow was selected for a specific gameplay, accessibility, or navigation function.
