Why Did Christian Art Take Centuries to Show Jesus on the Cross?

A late Roman graffito shows a crucified figure, but the earliest surviving Christian narrative scenes appear around the early fifth century, depicting Jesus alive rather than dead.

Christian art did not wait centuries to show any figure crucified: a Roman graffito from the late second or early third century depicts a cross and a worshipper, probably in mockery. What appears only in the surviving Christian narrative record around the early fifth century is a different kind of image—and its Jesus is alive, upright and triumphant, not a dead body. The gap is real in the art that survives, but it does not prove that no earlier Christian image ever existed.

What counts as the “first” depiction?

The answer depends on what the question means by “depict Jesus dying on the cross.” A hostile or ambiguous image of a crucified figure is not the same as a Christian devotional image, and a narrative scene is not the same as a symbolic cross. Scholars’ “firsts” can therefore refer to different objects.

Evidence Date and context What it shows What it can establish
Alexamenos graffito Late second to early third century CE, dated by Rome’s Colosseum archaeological park to the Severan age A human-like, donkey-headed figure fixed to a cross and a person raising an arm toward it; the Greek caption says, “Alexamenos worships [his] god.” An early image associating a crucified figure with a worshipper, probably as mockery of a Christian—not a neutral Christian image or an uncontested portrait of Jesus. Colosseum Archaeological Park
Maskell Passion Ivories Early fifth century; an ivory plaque carved in Rome Jesus on the cross, juxtaposed with Judas’s suicide; Jesus is alive and defiant. One of the earliest surviving Christian narrative treatments of the Crucifixion, joining execution to resurrection victory. Felicity Harley McGowan, 2011
British Museum ivory casket panel Early fifth century Christ wide-eyed, with arms spread in a pose of triumph more than surrender. The Fitzwilliam Museum describes it as the earliest surviving narrative depiction of the Crucifixion. “Earliest” here concerns surviving narrative art, not every possible earlier image. Fitzwilliam Museum
Santa Sabina door panel Early fifth century, commonly dated to around 420; exact dating and sequence are approximate Christ between two thieves, in a composition with figures that become familiar in later Crucifixion imagery. An early surviving carved scene, not evidence of a sudden, universal change in Christian art. Fitzwilliam Museum; scholarly book preview

A scholarly introduction says the Crucifixion is absent from surviving Christian art before the early fifth century, while noting a small group of engraved gems tentatively dated as early as the late third or early fourth century. Such tentative dating, alongside uncertainty over what qualifies as a Christian narrative scene, is why “first image” needs qualification. University of Adelaide repository thesis

Why the earliest Christian scenes show a living Christ

The early fifth-century ivory images do not present Jesus as a defeated corpse. In the Maskell Passion Ivories, his upright, defiant body makes the cross an instrument of execution while also pointing beyond death. Art historian Felicity Harley McGowan describes the earliest surviving Crucifixion images as showing Jesus “defiantly alive”—a visual interpretation that incorporates both execution and his subsequent victory over death in the Resurrection. McGowan, 2011

This is more than a difference in anatomy or pose. The image’s emphasis is triumph rather than prolonged suffering: the viewer sees the means of death, but the living Christ signals that death has not had the final word. The juxtaposition with Judas’s suicide in the Maskell plaque reinforces that contrast. The image is therefore not a straightforward attempt to record the instant of death.

Why a recognizable Crucifixion scene emerged late

No surviving evidence proves one definitive cause. The long interval is best understood as the overlap of cultural stigma, artistic choices and theological meaning, complicated by the fragility and incompleteness of the record.

Crucifixion carried social shame

In Roman society, crucifixion was an ignominious punishment associated with dishonor. Making it the central image of Christian devotion meant transforming a degrading execution into a meaningful sign. That context helps explain why a direct scene may not have been an obvious early choice, but it does not establish a universal Christian policy against depicting the event.

Artists had other ways to signify Christ

Early Christian art could draw on symbols and biblical imagery rather than show a body nailed to the cross. A graduate study of early Christian imagery describes the unadorned cross as older than the crucifix and surveys cultural, political, social, artistic and theological factors behind the development of crucifixion imagery. This evidence does not support the claim that early Christians simply had no interest in Jesus’s death. Saint John’s repository study

The surviving record is not the full record of what was made

Images can disappear, survive in fragments or remain hard to classify. The Alexamenos graffito is early but probably satirical; the engraved gems proposed as pre-fifth-century examples are only tentatively dated. Those objects do not fill the gap with a clear, securely identified Christian narrative Crucifixion scene, but they make it unsafe to equate “not known among surviving works” with “never made.”

Several explanations are more credible than one

Social stigma, the circumstances of early Christian communities, artistic convention and theological interpretation may have intersected. The evidence does not demonstrate that persecution alone, a ban on images or a single doctrinal controversy delayed Crucifixion scenes. Nor can one controversy by itself explain why such scenes later became more popular; the surviving scholarship cautions against reducing that development to dogma alone. scholarly book preview

What changed after the fifth century?

Crucifixion scenes become more visible in the sixth century and later, but the transition was gradual, not a single moment when every Christian community adopted a new image. The early fifth-century ivories and the Santa Sabina door panel are significant surviving examples, not proof that the motif instantly became common everywhere. The chronology describes what remains and how it is classified; it cannot reconstruct every lost image or establish a single cause for the changing visual language.
