Horseshoes protect a hoof from excessive wear or provide support for a particular horse’s needs, but they are not necessary for every horse. Whether a horse should be shod depends on its hoof growth and condition, workload, and the surfaces it travels on. A farrier can assess routine hoof care and shoe fit; a veterinarian should be involved if the horse is lame or has a hoof or leg health problem.

What horseshoes do
A horseshoe is shaped to the hoof and attached to its insensitive outer wall. Depending on the horse and its circumstances, a shoe may help protect against bruising, splitting, and excessive wear, improve comfort during work, or provide traction on a particular surface. These are possible purposes, not guaranteed benefits of every shoe. The appropriate choice depends on the horse’s hoof condition and requirements.

Horseshoeing became useful for horses that travel long distances or carry heavy loads: even a horse with sound hooves can become foot sore under those demands. A veterinary review discusses these protective and functional purposes, while eXtension’s hoof-care guidance emphasizes that shoeing decisions should be based on the individual horse.

Does every horse need shoes?
No. Some horses can remain barefoot when their hooves wear at a rate their growth can keep up with and they stay comfortable. eXtension says shoeing is not usually necessary unless hoof wear exceeds growth and results in lameness. That is general guidance, not a rule for diagnosing an individual horse: workload, footing, hoof condition, and health history also matter.
A horse that is sore, develops excessive wear, or has another hoof concern needs an assessment rather than an automatic decision to add shoes. Work with a farrier on hoof care, and consult a veterinarian when lameness or disease is involved. eXtension’s horse-care guidance recommends collaboration between owners, farriers, and veterinarians.

How often should a horse’s hooves be trimmed?
Hooves grow continuously, so both barefoot and shod horses need regular observation and trimming as appropriate. There is no single calendar that suits every horse. eXtension gives six to twelve weeks as a general trimming interval, with timing affected by hoof growth, activity, and terrain. A separate eXtension article offers seasonal examples—at least every six to eight weeks in summer and every six to twelve weeks in winter where growth slows—while stressing that the horse’s needs determine the schedule.

Why fit and hoof health matter
The visible hoof wall is made of horny material that grows continuously. Hoof material is keratin; within the hoof, sensitive laminae with a blood supply are distinct from the insensitive laminae in the wall. This is why careful preparation, balance, and individual shoe fit matter. A shoe nail is intended to attach to the insensitive outer wall, not sensitive tissue; a “hot nail” that reaches sensitive structures is a complication, not normal fitting.
A farrier prepares the hoof and selects and fits a suitable shoe. Shoes are not interchangeable accessories: a generic pattern cannot be assumed to suit every hoof or purpose. Leave trimming and shoe fitting to a trained farrier. If the horse shows lameness or another health problem, involve a veterinarian rather than relying on shoeing alone.

- Veterinarian: Lameness, suspected disease, or other hoof and limb health concerns.
- Owner: Regularly observe the horse’s comfort and hoof condition, and share changes in workload, terrain, or movement with the professionals involved.
University of Illinois veterinary medicine describes farriers as important to horse health and veterinary medicine. For a horse with a hoof problem, coordinated farrier and veterinary care helps ensure that the response addresses both hoof management and the animal’s health.
