Why I Repainted the Room White—and What Changed

A personal room makeover shows how a slightly warm white changed the mood, tile relationship and decorating potential of walls that had previously been black and brown.

Kristi Linauer’s “bold new color choice” was to repaint a previously black-and-brown room white. She used a shade called Polar Bear, described it as slightly warm, and found the finished room brighter, cheerier and more compatible with its tile floor. The project is useful as a decorating case study, not as proof that one paint or application method will work on every wall.

Her account, originally published July 18, 2013 and displayed as updated December 24, 2015, records a personal experiment: white was not necessarily her default choice for every room, but she wanted to see what it would do here and liked the idea of colorful objects against a pale backdrop.

The change was really about how the room felt

Before the repaint, the walls had appeared in black and brown versions. Linauer’s reaction to the white was immediate: “Aaaahhhhh…so fresh, so bright, so clean!!” That is a description of perceived atmosphere, not a measured lighting result. Still, it identifies the practical question many homeowners have: will white make a particular room feel more open and usable, or will it look stark?

In this room, white solved three visual problems at once. It made the space feel more cheerful than the black treatment, blended more naturally with the tile floor, and gave colorful furnishings and accessories a calm background. The brown version did not produce the effect she wanted. Those observations are specific to her room, its tile and its contents, but they provide a sensible way to evaluate a similar change.

Wall treatment Effect Linauer reported What that suggests for your room
White Brighter and “a lot cheerier”; blended with the tile; supported colorful objects Useful when you want the room to feel lighter or need a neutral backdrop for saturated decor
Black Less successful beside the tile and less cheerful in her judgment Dark walls can be dramatic, but check whether they compete with flooring and reduce the mood you want
Brown Received a negative reaction from the author A warm dark neutral may not harmonize with the undertones or light level of your space

The comparison does not establish that white is universally better. It shows why looking at the whole room matters more than choosing a color in isolation.

What “Polar Bear” means here

Polar Bear is the name Linauer gives the white she selected. She describes it as “a touch on the warm side,” which means it was not intended as a stark, blue-leaning white. A warm white can sit more comfortably beside beige, cream, wood and many tile colors, while a cooler white can read crisper or more contrasty. The description is qualitative; the post does not provide a color code, manufacturer, product line, finish, sheen or current retail listing.

That missing specification matters if you want to duplicate the result. “Polar Bear” is not enough information to assume that a can sold under that name today has the same formula or appearance. Treat the name as a starting point, then inspect a current swatch or sample from the maker you are considering. View it beside your actual tile, trim and furnishings rather than relying on a small screen image.

What the original repaint involved

Linauer reports that the room took two coats and that she did not use primer. Her exact wording is: “And the most shocking part? It only took two coats! And I didn’t use primer!” That is a project detail, not a rule. It may have worked because of the particular existing surface, paint, color, preparation and product she used. A different wall, dark color or paint formulation can require a different plan.

She also says she had used the same white elsewhere: on doors, trim, board and batten, living-room built-ins, cabinets in the connected bathroom and faux wood-slat walls in another bathroom. Those repeated uses show consistency in her decorating scheme, but they do not identify the paint’s technical specifications or guarantee that the shade will look identical under every light source.

If you want to try a similar white-room experiment

The following procedure adapts the decision behind Linauer’s project without assuming that your walls are identical to hers. Follow the label on the paint you buy for drying, recoat and ventilation instructions.

  1. Record the room as it is. Look at the walls in morning, afternoon and evening light. Note how the existing color relates to the floor, ceiling, trim, upholstery and large furnishings. A white that looks balanced at noon can appear warmer or cooler after sunset.
  2. Define the goal in plain language. Decide whether you want more brightness, a calmer background, stronger contrast with artwork, or a visual connection to nearby rooms. “I want white” is less useful than “I want the tile to feel integrated and the accessories to stand out.”
  3. Test a real sample. Apply large sample areas or movable boards in more than one wall position. Keep the sample next to the tile and trim. Check it with the room’s lights on and off. Do not approve a color from a tiny card alone.
  4. Inspect the existing coating. Look for peeling, chalking, grease, glossy patches, cracks and water damage. Identify whether the wall is drywall, plaster, wood or another material, because preparation and primer requirements differ.
  5. Clean and repair before judging coverage. Remove dust and residue, fill holes, smooth repairs and allow patched areas to dry. Uneven texture or contamination can remain visible even when the color is right.
  6. Make a primer decision based on the surface. Primer can be important over very dark colors, stains, porous repairs, glossy coatings or uncertain substrates. If the existing finish is sound and the paint label permits direct application, you may decide differently, but Linauer’s no-primer result should not be generalized.
  7. Protect adjacent surfaces. Mask or cut in carefully around trim, floors, outlets and fixtures. Remove switch plates where practical, and cover the floor and furniture.
  8. Apply the paint evenly. Keep a wet edge, avoid overworking partially dried areas and follow the product’s stated recoat time. Two coats may be enough for one project and insufficient for another; let the wall’s actual coverage determine the next step.
  9. Evaluate after the finish cures. Inspect in daylight and at night from normal viewing positions. Check corners, repaired spots and areas behind furniture before putting the room back together.
  10. Reintroduce color deliberately. Return artwork, textiles and accessories one group at a time. White walls can make colorful pieces more noticeable, so use the backdrop to create a hierarchy rather than covering every surface immediately.

Why the tile relationship is decisive

Linauer specifically preferred the white beside the tile floor. Flooring occupies a large visual area and remains in view from almost every angle, so wall color should be assessed as part of that combination. Stand a sample vertically near the floor instead of comparing it against a white computer page. Observe whether the wall color makes the tile look cleaner and more intentional or emphasizes an undertone you dislike.

A slightly warm white can reduce the abruptness between warm tile and bright walls. That does not mean every warm white will match every tile: some floors have pink, yellow, gray or green undertones that react differently. The practical test is the side-by-side sample under the room’s real lighting.

When white is a strong choice

You need a flexible backdrop

If a room contains artwork, textiles, collections or furniture in several colors, white can reduce competition among them. Linauer liked the idea of colorful objects against the white, and that approach works best when the accessories are chosen intentionally. A restrained wall lets one vivid chair, painting or rug act as a focal point.

You want a lighter emotional tone

Her description of the white as cheerier is subjective, but it captures a common design objective: replacing a heavy or muddy wall color with a brighter field. The effect depends on daylight, artificial lighting, ceiling height and surface reflectance. White cannot create daylight where windows are absent, yet it may prevent the walls from absorbing as much visual attention as a very dark color.

The room connects to other painted elements

Using one white on trim, doors, built-ins and selected cabinetry can create continuity. Linauer had already used this shade on those elements in other parts of the house. Repeating a color can make separate materials feel related, provided the sheen and condition of each surface are compatible.

When white may be the wrong answer

White is not automatically restful or easy. In a room with strong glare, very cool lighting or little architectural detail, a bright white can feel stark. In a space dominated by yellowed finishes, a cool white may exaggerate the contrast; a warm white may be more forgiving, but only a sample can confirm that.

White also reveals preparation problems. Patches, roller texture, lap marks and uneven sheen can be easier to notice against a pale wall. If the existing black or brown coating is glossy, damaged or prone to bleed-through, plan for more preparation than the anecdotal two-coat result suggests.

How to make colorful decor work against white

Start with the largest or most important colored element, such as a rug, sofa, artwork or tile accent. Pull one or two supporting colors from it for smaller objects. Leave some unfilled wall area so the room does not become visually noisy. Natural wood, woven materials and black accents can provide structure without requiring another wall color.

Because white reflects attention back toward the room, clutter that was less noticeable against a dark wall may become more obvious. Edit displays, group similar objects and use varied heights. The goal is not to make every object bright; it is to let selected colors read clearly.

What this project can—and cannot—prove

The strongest conclusion is personal: Linauer preferred the white version of this room to the earlier black and brown versions. The post does not test paint durability, washability, coverage across multiple substrates, cost, light-reflectance values or competing shades. It also does not establish a universal number of coats or a universal primer decision.

Use the project as evidence that a warm-leaning white can change the mood of a room and visually connect with tile while supporting colorful decor. Use your own samples and surface inspection to decide whether the same strategy suits your walls.
