iOS 7 replaced stitched-leather textures, faux wood and shiny, button-like controls with cleaner typography, color and translucent layers. The shift was not simply a move to featureless flatness: it reflected Jony Ive’s view that people who already understood touchscreens no longer needed interfaces to imitate physical objects. On that design argument, he was right—though the available evidence does not prove that every change improved usability for every user.
What skeuomorphism looked like in early iOS
Skeuomorphism is a design approach that makes a digital element resemble a familiar physical object or material. In earlier iOS versions, Notes looked like a yellow legal pad, iBooks displayed a faux wooden bookshelf, and controls used gloss, highlights and shadows to suggest tangible buttons. Those cues made software feel familiar, but they also asked screens to imitate the materials of the world outside them.

Apple announced iOS 7 on June 10, 2013, calling it “the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone” and presenting a redesigned interface with refined typography, a new color palette, translucency and distinct layers. The announcement also covered system features including Control Center, redesigned multitasking, AirDrop and a redesigned Photos app. Apple’s announcement framed the release as a broad redesign, not just a change in visual style.
Why Ive thought the physical metaphors had run their course
In a September 2013 interview, Ive explained that the design team believed people had become comfortable “touching glass” and understood the benefits of a touchscreen. That familiarity, he said, gave the team “an incredible liberty in not having to reference the physical world so literally.” The aim was an environment that was “less specific” and that “got design out of the way.” Ive’s interview with USA Today makes the reasoning explicit: a visual metaphor that once helped teach a new medium could become unnecessary once users knew how to use it.

That is a stronger explanation than saying Apple wanted everything to look plain. Literal textures and glossy ornament could compete with the information on screen. Removing them created room for typography, spacing, color and hierarchy to do more of the work. Ive described simplicity not as mere lack of decoration, but as bringing order to complexity in Apple’s iOS 7 announcement.
Was iOS 7 really flat design?
“Flat design” captures part of the visual departure, but it is an incomplete label. iOS 7 moved away from literal materials and shiny, dimensional controls; it did not eliminate depth or movement. Translucent surfaces, animation and layered interface elements still helped show structure and state. Contemporary coverage likewise described clean, two-dimensional graphics alongside translucency and motion. The important distinction is between imitating a physical object and using visual depth as information. A translucent layer or a transition can help orient someone in an interface without pretending the screen is leather, wood or paper. iOS 7 discarded many literal references, not every tool for showing relationships between elements.
Who was responsible for the redesign?
It is fair to call iOS 7 the result of Ive’s design direction, but not to say he alone made every screen. Apple described a team bringing expertise from design through engineering. Ive was the principal public design voice, while Craig Federighi, Apple’s software-engineering executive, discussed the work alongside him.

Federighi offered a technical reason for changing the visual language: shadows had helped distract from display limitations, but a more precise display left “nowhere to hide,” so the team wanted clear typography. His explanation, reported in the USA Today interview, complements Ive’s point: as screens improved, typography and clear structure could carry the interface without relying on heavy visual effects.

The case for the change is persuasive as a design argument. Physical imitation can help introduce unfamiliar interactions; once tapping and swiping are familiar, those metaphors may add visual noise instead of useful guidance. iOS 7’s use of clearer type, color, spacing, translucency and motion offered other ways to communicate content and hierarchy.

That does not establish that every user understood every screen better, or preferred the new look. The contemporary sources document Apple’s rationale and the redesign, not a controlled usability study demonstrating a universal improvement. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Ive was right that touch interfaces no longer needed to imitate physical materials so literally, while the success of individual iOS 7 choices remains a separate question.
