For some independent artists, NFTs have meant finding their work copied, minted or listed without consent—and then spending time reporting it, worrying about phishing, and trying to work out what remedies are available. Other artists say NFT platforms helped them share work with new audiences. The divide is not simply whether NFTs can display or sell art; it is whether artists retain meaningful control over their work, its context and the response when it is used without permission.
How a copied image can become an NFT listing
An NFT is a token associated with a digital item; that association does not, by itself, prevent someone from attempting to mint or list a copy of an image. Futurism’s January 24, 2022, report by Simon Spichak described artists finding their work listed without authorization and trying to get those listings removed. One independent furry artist, quoted anonymously, put the experience plainly: “My art was stolen and minted as an NFT.”

The report also covered “Right Click Save This,” a work assembled from furry profile pictures reportedly collected without permission. Futurism recounted that the work sold for 20 ETH on Foundation. The episode exposed a conflict over appropriation and consent: the NFT controversy included not only artists objecting to unauthorized listings of their own work, but a work whose underlying images were themselves reportedly gathered without permission.
Why unauthorized listings create work and risk
Reporting can become a recurring burden
Finding a listing does not automatically remove it. Artists in the 2022 reporting described discovering copied work or being taunted about it, then having to pursue reports. Artist RJ Palmer said he reported 29 instances of his art being stolen as NFTs in a 24-hour period. That is Palmer’s account of his own experience, not a measure of how often theft occurs across the artist community.

Each report takes time that could otherwise go toward making, sharing or earning from art. And a platform’s reporting route is not the same as a guaranteed remedy. İpek Yeginsu’s paper in the ISEA2023 proceedings describes OpenSea anti-plagiarism and stolen-art reporting mechanisms implemented in 2022, while noting that a takedown request was not guaranteed to be accepted. Those are historical descriptions, not confirmation of current OpenSea policy or procedure; processes and outcomes are platform-specific.
Phishing adds a separate security concern
Spichak’s article also reported phishing schemes aimed at artists’ accounts. A fake message or login prompt can put an account at risk independently of whether a particular art listing infringes anyone’s rights. In practice, the possibility of copied work and the risk of account compromise can make responding to an NFT-related problem more complicated than filing a straightforward removal request.

Control over context can be lost
A copied image can circulate with a new seller, description or implied connection to the artist. That can confuse audiences about who made or authorized the work. The Futurism report included a case involving work by the late artist Qing “Qinni” Han, illustrating that an artist may not be available to discover or respond to a listing personally.
What artists may gain—and what remains uncertain
NFTs have also offered some artists a way to reach people beyond their existing audience. BruceTheGoose, identified by Futurism as a crypto artist and founder of NFThub and Nifty Pride, said, “I never publicly shared my art before NFTs.” That account matters, but it is one artist’s experience; it does not establish that NFTs reliably bring visibility or income to independent artists generally.

Yeginsu’s ISEA2023 paper frames NFTs as a possible additional exposure and income channel alongside existing vulnerabilities, including copyright conflicts, environmental criticism, speculation and uneven access to technical knowledge. The paper also discusses collaboration among artists as one possible way to share audiences and reduce individual production barriers; it does not establish that collaboration works for every artist or resolves the risks of unauthorized copying.

Futurism’s 2022 article cited Artnet News for the historical figure that half of NFTs sold for less than $200. That is not a current market statistic. The same article noted that platform, minting and crypto-to-fiat transaction costs can affect what an artist actually receives. A headline sale price, including the reported 20 ETH sale of “Right Click Save This,” therefore says little on its own about typical earnings or an artist’s net proceeds.

Copyright questions do not have a universal answer here
The available reporting does not settle how copyright law applies to every NFT dispute. In the 2022 Futurism article, copyright attorney and Queen Mary University doctoral researcher Mike Dunford described the situation as “a disaster zone” and said, “The problem is that none of this stuff we can know the answer to until it goes to court.” Those were his comments in that historical report, not legal advice or a statement of the law today.
For an artist facing a copied listing, the practical distinction is between a platform complaint and a legal determination: a marketplace may provide a reporting process, but that process does not itself decide every underlying copyright question. The cited reporting does not establish current law, current marketplace rules, or the likely outcome of a particular dispute.
Why the title reflects some artists’ experience, not everyone’s
Palmer’s frustration captures how relentless the work can feel: “Every artist I know is getting their work jacked and [it’s] just not fair or right. What can we even do, it feels hopeless.” It is an individual account quoted in 2022, not evidence that all independent artists share his view. The same reporting records artists who saw audience access and opportunity, while Yeginsu’s later discussion places that possibility alongside copyright conflict, speculation and barriers to participation.
For painters and illustrators considering digital distribution, the central tension is control. NFT-related channels may help some artists reach buyers or communities, but tokenization does not itself prevent copying, guarantee a removal, or settle a copyright dispute. Whether the opportunity is worth the exposure depends on the artist’s priorities and tolerance for platform, security and legal uncertainty.
