The maker movement is likely to endure because it is not defined by a single machine, trend, or venue. It brings together hands-on skills, accessible tools, shared knowledge, and communities where people learn by making—whether that means painting, sewing, electronics, woodworking, or digital fabrication. Its future is not guaranteed: programs can struggle with funding, access, training, or relevance. But the movement’s adaptability gives it more ways to continue than a technology fad built around one tool.
Making is bigger than any one tool or craft
A makerspace may have 3D printers and laser cutters, but making also includes traditional craft and practical experimentation. The American Library Association’s overview describes makers as DIY practitioners, tinkerers, hackers, entrepreneurs, and learners, and places older craft tools alongside newer technologies. That breadth matters: when interest in one tool fades, the impulse to build, repair, design, and experiment can find another form.

Painting fits naturally within that broader idea. Mixing colors, testing a surface, adapting a technique, or turning an idea into a finished work all involve learning through materials and decisions. A maker identity does not require a workshop full of machines; it can begin with a brush, a sketch, and the willingness to try something and revise it. The ALA overview also points to kits and toys that develop building and programming skills as one route into maker education, not as a definition of making itself.
The European Commission’s 2017 overview examines FabLabs, hackerspaces, and makerspaces as physical expressions of the movement, while considering their tools, communities, and possible socioeconomic effects. It is useful for understanding the movement’s range, not for estimating how many spaces exist today.

Tools help, but shared knowledge is what makes a community
Equipment creates opportunities, but it does not automatically create a maker community. The ALA emphasizes that skill-sharing and communication can matter as much as the tools. People learn from demonstrations, peer advice, informal troubleshooting, and seeing how someone else approaches a problem. Those exchanges make it possible for a beginner to participate without owning every tool or already knowing how to use it.
This is as true for painting as for digital fabrication. A shared studio, class, library program, or community event can give people access to guidance and a place to work. The important question is not simply whether a space owns specialized equipment, but whether participants can get practical help, learn safely, and contribute their own ideas.

The movement has more than one place to grow
Makers meet in schools, libraries, community spaces, workshops, and public events, as well as online. That variety makes the movement less dependent on a single institution. A school program can introduce young people to making; a library can offer shared equipment and instruction; a community group can organize around local interests; and online exchanges can help people share projects beyond their immediate neighborhood.
Public events show activity, not the movement’s total size
Maker Faire reported 144 events in 2023: 89 community faires, 38 school faires, and 17 faires in retail centers. These are Maker Faire event counts, not a census of makers, spaces, or global participation. They do, however, illustrate how making can appear in different settings and bring projects and ideas into public view. See Maker Faire’s 2023 yearbook report.

Education can connect making to real problems
A 2019 European Commission Joint Research Centre report explored possible futures for makerspaces in European education and training through scenarios looking ahead to 2034. It highlights interdisciplinary work, real-world problems, and flexible peer learning and mentoring as features that can make these spaces relevant to education. Those scenarios are ways to consider possibilities, not predictions that every school or program will adopt them. The report is available from the Joint Research Centre.

A 2026 meta-systematic review synthesized 17 reviews of makerspace education published between 2019 and 2024. It reports commonly identified benefits including creativity, 21st-century skills, academic performance, motivation, social responsiveness, and digital literacy. Those are findings reported across the reviewed literature, not outcomes that every participant or program can expect. The authors also identify challenges in curriculum integration, educator training, and equitable access, and call for longitudinal evidence on academic and career outcomes, particularly for underrepresented groups. A 2022 systematic review of 22 empirical studies of preK–12 school makerspace interventions adds important caution. It found substantial variety in activities and measured outcomes, alongside a lack of established best practices for teachers and approaches to equity that were still emerging. A makerspace is therefore not a shortcut to better learning: how it is designed, taught, and made accessible matters. See Rouse and Rouse’s review of school-based interventions.
What helps a maker program remain useful
Durability depends on more than enthusiasm or equipment. A program has to keep serving the people who use it, and that may require adapting its projects, teaching, or community partnerships over time. MakerUSA’s toolkit offers examples of this broader work, including educator professional development, maker landscape assessment, youth entrepreneurship, and community-led makerspace design. These are examples of approaches, not proof that every program uses them or that they guarantee success. Explore the MakerUSA toolkit.
For someone choosing a class, shared studio, or community program, useful questions include:
- Access and cost: Can participants take part without buying costly tools or materials?
- Tools and fit: Are the available materials and equipment appropriate for the projects and people using the space?
- Instruction and safety: Is guidance available, especially when tools or materials require training?
- Community and inclusion: Can participants share knowledge and feel welcome, including people new to the activity?
- Assessment: If a program makes claims about learning or local impact, what evidence does it use?
Why the movement can last without every makerspace lasting
The strongest case for the maker movement’s staying power is its ability to change shape. It can include traditional craft and emerging technology, formal education and informal learning, individual projects and shared community work. Because participation does not depend on one tool or one type of venue, people can keep making in different ways as their interests and circumstances change.
That adaptability should not be confused with inevitability. The evidence does not establish that all makerspaces are growing, inclusive, financially sustainable, or effective at producing lasting academic, career, business, or neighborhood outcomes. It supports a more measured conclusion: making remains relevant across multiple settings, and communities have practical ways to keep programs responsive, but their success depends on decisions about access, instruction, resources, and purpose.
