KC Green has said “This Is Fine” grew out of trying to ignore an off day while he was struggling to get his antidepressant treatment right. He thinks the familiar tension—things going badly while you try to keep smiling—helps explain why people keep adapting and sharing the image. The two-panel meme is brief and open-ended; the original six-panel comic turns much darker. “Timeless” is an interpretation of Green’s comments and the meme’s adaptability, not a measured statistic about its popularity.
What the “This Is Fine” meme comes from
The familiar image is the opening two panels of KC Green’s six-panel Gunshow comic, known as “On Fire” and “The Pills Are Working.” It features Question Hound, a dog sitting in a burning room and insisting that everything is fine. In the complete strip, the scene escalates: the dog’s arm and face melt. The crop keeps the composed expression and the denial, while leaving out that grotesque ending.

Green recalled that the comic came from an off day and his effort to ignore feeling worse while he was struggling to get his antidepressants right. That is his account of the comic’s inspiration, not a claim about what antidepressant treatment does or a diagnosis of the character.
Why Green thinks it resonates
In a 2016 interview with The Verge, Green described the appeal as the feeling that “Things are burning down around me, but you got to have smile sometimes.” He said people recognize the impulse to keep going and ask, “Well, what are you going to do?” In a 2017 interview with LAist, he similarly described the simple feeling of things going badly while you ignore the distress because there is not much you can do about a house on fire.

Those are Green’s explanations, not a survey of how every viewer reads the image. They do suggest why it can fit so many situations: the scene is immediately legible, while the dog’s smile can signal resignation, forced cheer, or dry humor depending on the caption and context.
Why the two-panel crop travels so easily
Brevity makes it quick to understand
Asked why the opening panels work as a meme, Green answered, “Brevity. Just quick memes. That’s all people want. And that’s all that some of them have seen.” The crop sets up a contradiction in a few beats: a room is visibly on fire, yet the dog insists it is fine. A viewer does not need to know the comic’s plot to get the joke.

- All the Feels, Stuffed in One Dumpster: This positive dumpster plush set includes a dumpster plush and 6 mini fire plushies—each showing a unique emotion from joy to frustration—tucked inside a soft, carryable dumpster plush. You can mix, match, or toss them around as your mood shifts. And when you want to end this mess? Just gently close the lid, and the rage will instantly "subside"
- Daily Encouragement: "IT'S FINE, WE ARE FINE, EVERYTHING IS FINE" - this sentence embroidered on the dumpster is not satire, but a gentle firmness. This group of expressive little fire dolls is exactly the most humorous support team when you are feeling down, bringing positive energy to your daily life
- Designed to Overflow — That’s the Point!: The lid won’t fully close when all six flames are inside — and that’s on purpose! It’s a playful design choice that reminds you: some feelings can’t be contained. Let your burning emotions spill out a little — that’s part of the charm
- Durable Build, Soft to the Touch: Our funny dumpster plush is all filled with soft and highly elastic high-quality cotton, combined with precise and meticulous stitching techniques. They are not easy to come apart or deform, and are not afraid of daily kneading and playing
- Fits Anywhere, Lifts Every Mood: From office desks to bedroom, bookshelves to coffee tables, this quirky fire plushies set blends in effortlessly while adding a touch of humor and calm to any space. It’s your mood booster in disguise
The crop leaves room for new situations
Green recalled seeing the panels used with “What finals are like,” and described school and end-of-semester stress as common applications. The same basic contrast can be attached to other situations in which someone appears calm while events are going wrong. The full comic supplies a specific, increasingly dark ending; the crop leaves that resolution out, making it easier to pair with a new caption.
From webcomic to widely remixed image
Accounts differ on the comic’s date. Green told LAist it “ran in 2012.” The Verge described it as a 2013 webcomic, and Know Your Meme dates the Gunshow comic to January 9, 2013. Those accounts distinguish Green’s recollection of when it ran from the recorded post date; they should not be collapsed into one definitive date.

Know Your Meme records the opening panels being submitted to a 4chan /vr/ thread on April 26, 2013, followed by later Reddit and Imgur circulation and a Reddit post in January 2014. That is a secondary chronology of documented milestones, not proof of the first time anyone shared the image. Green’s recollection of its use for finals and school stress points to its adaptability beyond the original strip.
The meme also took on public political uses. The Washington Post reported on the Republican National Convention’s use of the image and Green’s response, “This Is Not Fine.” Green has described having complicated feelings about being known through a meme while benefiting from its success. The available interviews and chronology document examples of circulation and reuse, but do not establish a total audience, usage frequency, or measured long-term popularity.

The original comic and the meme are different experiences
| Version | What it shows | What it leaves the reader with |
|---|---|---|
| Two-panel meme crop | The dog sits amid flames and insists everything is fine. | A concise, adaptable reaction that can stand alone or take a new caption. |
| Full six-panel comic | The burning-room scene continues until the dog’s arm and face melt. | A darker, grotesque ending that makes the original sequence explicit. |
The crop’s popularity does not require viewers to know the full strip. Reading the complete comic, however, changes the tone: its apparent reassurance is part of a sequence that ends in bodily horror.
Green’s work beyond the meme
Question Hound continued to appear in Green’s comics. The Washington Post’s 2021 profile covered his Funny Online Animals strip and his complicated relationship with being widely recognized for one image. Green told the paper, “I just want to make comics. I’ve only ever wanted to make comics.” The meme made his work widely visible, but it is one piece of a broader comics career.
Official merchandise and the full comic in print
Green announced expanded licensing and merchandise in a March 2024 Patreon post, mentioning pins, patches, calendars, shirts, and other items. He identified specialty soft enamel pins from Zen Monkey Studios and his TopatoCo store. The announcement documents those categories and plans at that time; it does not establish current stock or a public affiliate program.
One publisher-listed item is the This Is Fine Talking Figurine by KC Green.
