A room can look “cheap” even when its furnishings are costly, and an inexpensive piece can look refined. Interior designer Laurel Bern’s July 2026 Laurel Home post treats that contrast as a matter of coordination, scale, materials and maintenance—not a price tag. Her twelve examples are personal visual judgments, not a universal test or a measured prediction of home value.

1. A room full of unrelated single furnishings
Bern’s first concern is the accumulated effect of one-off pieces: a consignment find beside an inherited chair, a flea-market table near a curbside cabinet, and several objects acquired at different times without a connecting idea. None has to be expensive—or bad—to make the room feel like a storage history rather than a composition.
The fix is not to discard everything. Identify what you genuinely use or love, then give those pieces a visual relationship. A repeated wood tone, a restrained color family, similar leg profiles or one unifying textile can connect mismatched furniture. Remove the weakest or least useful item, create breathing space and let one unusual piece act as an accent instead of asking every object to be the star.
What to check
- Can you name the room’s dominant function?
- Are there clear pathways between seating, doors and storage?
- Do at least two or three finishes, colors or shapes repeat?
- Is each remaining piece useful, comfortable or meaningful?
This approach preserves personal history while replacing an unconsidered collection with an intentional edit.
2. Shiny polyester curtains and garish prints
Bern objects to shiny, swagged window fabric and prints that look loud or poorly rendered. Her point is visual finish: a low-cost textile can appear polished when its drape, scale and pattern are handled well, while a costly fabric can look synthetic if it reflects light harshly or hangs awkwardly.
For a calmer treatment, choose fabric with a matte or softly textured surface, hang panels high enough to relate to the ceiling and make sure the width allows natural folds. Check a pattern at the distance from which it will actually be seen; a small sample can disguise an overlarge repeat or muddy colors. If the window needs privacy, combine a simple shade with fuller side panels rather than forcing one decorative treatment to do every job.
3. Wall-to-wall carpet in a living area
This is explicitly Bern’s preference, not a universal flooring rule. She excludes bedrooms and small offices from her objection and allows several possible living-area exceptions: seagrass, sisal, jute, apple matting, some natural-fiber-look woven nylon and tightly woven wool flat-weave. She does not extend those exceptions to kitchens or bathrooms.

Before replacing any floor, weigh acoustics, warmth, allergies, mobility, maintenance and the building’s requirements. A well-maintained broadloom carpet may be the most practical answer for a household with young children, limited mobility or a cold floor. If you want the visual definition of an area rug, measure the seating group so front legs can rest on it, and leave enough exposed flooring to show the room’s circulation.
4. Diagonal objects on square or rectangular tables
Bern sees a diagonal arrangement on a square or rectangular tabletop as fighting the table’s geometry. The resulting tension can make even attractive objects look randomly placed.
Align books, trays, lamps and decorative objects with the table’s edges. Use a rectangle on a rectangular surface, or create a small cluster whose dominant lines run parallel or perpendicular to the edges. On a round table, she suggests orienting the arrangement in relation to the nearby sofa—parallel or perpendicular—so the grouping connects to the room rather than floating without reference.
Vary height and texture within that aligned framework. A tall lamp, a lower stack and one organic object create hierarchy without requiring a diagonal “styling” gesture.
5. Art that is too small or a weak wall arrangement
Bern criticizes art that is undersized for its wall, overly cutesy for the setting or simply unsuited to the surrounding architecture. A small work can be excellent, but it needs a deliberate relationship to the furniture and the available wall area.

A single larger piece can anchor a sofa or console more convincingly than a tiny picture stranded in a large field of paint. If you already own same-size works, line them horizontally or vertically with consistent spacing. For a gallery wall, Bern recommends a grouping of five or more pieces so the arrangement reads as one composition rather than a few isolated marks.

Build the arrangement before drilling
- Trace each frame on paper and label its dimensions.
- Lay the paper shapes on the floor, keeping the outer boundary proportional to the furniture below.
- Adjust spacing until the grouping has a clear edge and visual center.
- Transfer the layout to the wall with removable tape, then install hardware.
Choose art for subject, color and scale—not merely because a blank wall needs filling.
6. Randomly mismatched photo frames
Family photographs are not the problem. Bern’s objection is to a pile of unrelated frames on a tabletop, shelf or piano, each with a different finish, profile and proportion. The eye has to process the frames before it can see the people.
A coordinated black-and-white photo wall is one option: keep the images monochrome and repeat a frame finish or mat proportion. You can also move photographs to a more private area, where a mix of personal frames feels appropriate, or put a larger collection in an album. A small number of thoughtfully placed photographs remains perfectly workable; the goal is editing and grouping, not removing family memories.
7. Inexpensive lace doilies, scarves and curtains
Bern distinguishes older fine lace from the inexpensive lace she considers visually distracting, especially a bright polyester lace mantel scarf against stained wood. The issue is the combination of shiny fiber, busy pattern and a surface that already has strong color or grain.
Inspect the material in daylight. If it catches light like plastic, yellows unevenly or competes with the furniture, remove it from the focal surface. Leave wood, stone or painted furniture uncovered, or use a simple runner with enough weight to lie flat. Keep heirloom lace that has craftsmanship or sentimental value, but place it where its delicacy is legible rather than layering it over every horizontal surface.
8. A dated bathroom left on autopilot
Bern’s examples include older-looking brass, Formica counters and pink fixtures or carpeting. These are signals of a particular era, not proof that every bathroom needs a renovation or that cosmetic work should outrank safety repairs.

Start with the change that improves daily use and visual coherence. Replacing a faucet, updating a shower enclosure, repainting the room or changing vanity hardware can shift the appearance without moving plumbing. Match the metal finish across the faucet, cabinet pulls and accessories, and test paint in the bathroom’s actual light. Keep serviceable fixtures when replacement would create waste or strain the budget; a clean, deliberate vintage bathroom is different from one that looks neglected.

9. Cheap lamps and obvious faux finishes
Bern targets lamps and accessories with imitation crackle or “antique” finishes that announce themselves as artificial. A distressed surface can be intentional, but a thin printed effect, uneven coating or overly shiny hardware often reads as a costume version of age.
Look at the lamp when it is switched off as well as on. The base should have a stable scale for the table, the shade should conceal the hardware from normal seated eye level and the finish should relate to another material in the room. If the lamp works but its finish is the problem, a professional repaint or a simple shade change may be enough. Do not replace a safe, functional light solely because it is not fashionable.
10. Ditzy wallpaper and a tacky border
“Ditzy” is Bern’s visual description for a small, fussy wallpaper pattern, especially when topped or capped by a border she finds tacky. There is no objective measurement for this judgment; pattern scale and context determine whether a room feels lively or cluttered.
Read the pattern at full wall size before committing. Tape up several repeats, view them from the doorway and compare them with the floor, trim and window treatments. If the wallpaper is the loudest element, simplify the border first or paint adjacent surfaces a quiet color. In a small powder room, a deliberately exuberant pattern can be the point; in a room already crowded with motifs, a larger-scale or lower-contrast paper may give the eye a place to rest.

11. Fake sculpted rugs imitating antique Aubusson
Bern contrasts imitation sculpted rugs with an antique Aubusson example and favors the depth and irregularity she associates with hand-woven work. She also cautions readers not to confuse hand-tufted and hand-knotted construction. In her account, a hand-tufted rug is made by pushing yarn through a canvas, securing it with latex adhesive and adding a backing; a hand-knotted rug is constructed knot by knot. This is her description and preference, not an independent technical certification.

When comparing rugs, ask for the actual construction, fiber, dimensions and care requirements rather than relying on words such as “antique look.” Consider traffic, pets, cleaning access and whether a sculpted pile will catch on doors or furniture. Bern mentions that her own large vintage hand-knotted Persian rug cost under $3,000 when she bought it; that historical personal purchase is not a current price guide or a typical market estimate.
12. Vertical blinds that no longer serve a purpose
Bern strongly dislikes inherited vertical blinds and recommends removing window treatments that no longer do useful work. A replacement decision still has to account for privacy, glare, insulation, window access and how often the treatment will be operated.
Test the window at morning, midday and night. If you need precise light control, consider a shade, curtain, shutter or another treatment whose operating style suits the opening. Measure inside or outside mounting space, check that panels clear handles and furniture, and keep a temporary covering during the changeover if the room faces neighbors. Removing a broken or permanently open blind can be an immediate improvement; replacing a functional one is optional.
How to decide what to change first
Bern’s list works best as a sequence of questions rather than a shopping list. Begin with function and safety, then address the visual problems that affect the largest surfaces or the room’s first view.
- Walk the room from the doorway. Note the first three things that look accidental, too small, overly shiny or visibly worn.
- Separate performance from taste. Repair unsafe lighting, damaged flooring or failed window coverage before making a style-only change.
- Correct scale and alignment. Reposition art, rugs and tabletop objects before buying replacements.
- Edit before adding. Remove one weak object, frame or textile and reassess the room in daylight.
- Choose one coherent update. A paint color, hardware finish, coordinated frame set or better-fitting shade can establish a direction for later work.
The central distinction in Bern’s advice is intentional presentation. Her quoted reminder is direct: “Inexpensive doesn’t always = Cheap. No, not at all. In fact, expensive items can easily make a room look cheap.” Treat the twelve examples as prompts to examine proportion, material, arrangement and purpose, then keep the home’s history and your own preferences in the finished room.
