Yes—an IKEA PAX wardrobe can work well in a studio, but only after you measure the room, ceiling, access route and the clearance required by your chosen doors. PAX is a configurable system rather than one fixed cabinet: you select frame height, width and depth, then add hinged, sliding or no doors and arrange KOMPLEMENT interiors for the belongings you actually own.

Because your studio dimensions, storage inventory and budget are not specified, no single PAX combination can honestly be called the right fit yet. What PAX gives you—and what it does not decide for you
PAX is IKEA’s modular wardrobe system. Its frames come in several standardized sizes, while doors and interior accessories let you configure storage for hanging clothes, folded garments, shoes and small accessories. That flexibility is useful in a studio where every inch of floor and wall matters.
The system does not automatically solve your space or storage problem. A frame that fits wall-to-wall may still fail at the ceiling, during upright assembly, through a doorway or when its doors need to swing or slide. Likewise, a large frame does not tell you whether you have enough drawers, shelves or hanging capacity. Treat the purchase as a room-planning exercise, not as a choice between one small wardrobe and one large wardrobe.
Measure the studio before choosing a frame
IKEA’s planning guidance starts with two measurements: floor-to-ceiling height and wall-to-wall width. Take measurements at several points, because skirting boards, uneven floors, pipes, radiators or a sloping ceiling can reduce the usable rectangle. Record the narrowest width and lowest ceiling height, not the most generous point.
- Measure the installation wall. Measure the full wall and then the clear width available after accounting for trim, outlets, switches and any furniture that must remain in place.
- Measure ceiling height. Compare the lowest point with the selected frame height and the configuration-specific minimum ceiling height in the product instructions.
- Measure the access route. Check the apartment entrance, hall, lift, stair turns and the studio doorway. A frame may fit the final wall but be impossible to carry into the room in its packaged or partially assembled state.
- Mark floor depth. Measure from the wall to the nearest bed, desk, kitchen unit or circulation path. Include the door movement or sliding-door zone, rather than measuring only the carcass.
- Check the wall. Identify whether the anchoring surface is drywall, masonry, timber or another material. IKEA says to use screws and plugs suitable for the home’s wall material; if you are unsure, seek professional help.
For a hinged-door configuration, IKEA’s guide says to allow an additional 1/2 inch. For sliding doors, allow an additional 2 inches. These are planning allowances, not a universal substitute for the exact product instructions. IKEA also says to allow at least 1/2 inch to assemble a wardrobe upright rather than raising it from the floor. Individual product pages can specify a different minimum ceiling height for a particular combination, so verify the listing you intend to buy.

Available PAX frame sizes
IKEA US lists two frame heights, three frame widths and two frame depths. The dimensions below are the frame options stated in the planning material; they do not by themselves establish the finished size of every door combination.

The 13 3/4-inch frame can preserve more walking space, but the available evidence does not establish how much usable storage you need or whether that depth works for your belongings. Do not choose it solely because it is smaller. Measure a representative hanger, shoe box, folded stack or equipment case and compare that object with the interior dimensions of the specific frame and accessory.
Choose the access style for the room you actually use
Hinged doors
IKEA describes hinged doors in 9 7/8-inch or 19 1/2-inch widths. They provide a familiar, full-opening view of the interior, but the door leaf needs clear floor space as it swings. Keep that arc away from a bed, desk chair, kitchenette or main walking route. The planning guide’s additional 1/2-inch allowance is for the chosen hinged-door setup; check the product instructions for the complete clearance.

IKEA describes pairs of sliding doors in 59-inch or 78 3/4-inch widths. A featured listing states that sliding doors do not take space to open, which can be valuable in a compact studio. They still occupy the front of the wardrobe and require the correct track and frame combination. Confirm that the selected pair matches the frame width and that you can reach the entire interior when one panel is parked behind the other.

Open configuration
An open PAX avoids door clearance altogether and makes contents immediately visible. That can suit a studio used for frequent outfit changes or equipment access. The trade-off is exposure: the contents remain in view and collect dust more readily than items behind doors. Decide whether visual openness is an intentional part of the room or merely the result of postponing a door purchase.
Plan the interior around your inventory
Start with a short inventory before opening the planner. Count the garments you hang, the garments you fold, pairs of shoes, bags, accessories and anything unusually long or bulky. Note which items need daily access and which can occupy higher or less convenient positions.
IKEA names KOMPLEMENT choices including shelves, drawers, shoe racks, trays and pull-out hangers. A jewelry tray can keep small items together; drawers can handle folded clothing or accessories; shelves suit stacks and boxes; shoe racks reserve a defined zone; and pull-out hangers can make a rear row easier to reach. Interior accessories may be sold separately, so do not assume that a frame or a door listing includes every organizer shown in a photograph.

- Folded-clothing zone: choose shelf or drawer positions based on the height of your actual stacks, rather than dividing the interior into equal-looking sections.
- Shoe and bag zone: check the footprint and weight of the items; measure tall boots or structured bags before selecting shelf spacing.
- Small-item zone: use trays or shallow drawers for jewelry, belts and other pieces that disappear on deep shelves.
- Access zone: put daily items between easy standing reach and eye level, reserving the top area for seasonal or infrequently used belongings.
Compatibility is size-specific. Confirm that each KOMPLEMENT accessory is intended for the exact frame width and depth you select. A product page can also change what is bundled, so compare the “included” list with the accessories you still need to purchase.

A practical PAX planning sequence
- Draw the room. Mark walls, doors, windows, radiators, outlets, furniture and the path you need to keep clear. Include the direction of every hinged door.
- Record the limiting measurements. Use the narrowest wall width, lowest ceiling point and least floor depth available at the proposed location.
- Select a frame envelope. Compare those limits with the 79 1/4-inch or 93 1/8-inch heights, the three widths and the two depths. Leave the required clearance for upright assembly and the chosen door type.
- Test the access style. Place the hinged-door swing, sliding-door track or open frontage on your sketch. Check access from the bed, desk and entrance, not only from an empty room.
- Build the interior from the inventory. Assign hanging, shelf, drawer, shoe and accessory zones before adding decorative features.
- Use IKEA’s planning tool and the exact product listing. Recheck frame, door and organizer compatibility, the stated minimum ceiling height, what is included and what is sold separately.
- Price the complete configuration. Add frames, doors, hinges or tracks, handles where applicable, organizers, delivery and any assembly assistance. Prices, stock and delivery are volatile, and no current total can be inferred without a location and a specific bill of materials.
- Confirm installation conditions. Make sure two adults can assemble the furniture safely, that the wall accepts the required fasteners and that the finished frame can be mounted flush as instructed.
Assembly and anchoring are part of the fit calculation
IKEA’s product guidance states: “Two people are needed to assemble this furniture.” Plan a clear assembly area and a safe method for raising the frame upright. The required 1/2-inch upright-assembly allowance is easy to overlook in a room with a low ceiling; a frame that technically fits when standing may not have enough room to be assembled in that position.
PAX is not a freestanding wardrobe that can simply be placed against a wall. IKEA warns that the furniture must be securely anchored with screws and plugs suitable for the wall material. Its guidance also says PAX frames must be mounted flush to the wall according to the assembly instructions. Locate studs or suitable masonry fixing points as appropriate for your wall, follow the supplied instructions and obtain professional help if you cannot identify a safe fixing method.
Do not remove anchoring from the plan to preserve a few inches of space. The wall condition, skirting and any gap needed to achieve a flush installation can affect the usable location and should be checked before ordering.

One current IKEA US combination is listed at 59 inches wide by 22 7/8 inches deep by 79 1/8 inches high. That is a product-specific example, not a universal PAX dimension. Its page states a 10-year limited warranty and estimates that the clothes rail holds about 40 shirts on hangers. The rail figure is IKEA’s estimate for that product, not an independent storage test or a general capacity rule for every PAX frame.

Verify the exact listing before relying on any of those details. Check whether the quoted dimensions include the selected doors, which components are included, which KOMPLEMENT interiors are additional, and whether the warranty terms and conditions apply to your purchase region.
Materials, cost and availability checks
The cited frame listing describes fiberboard and particleboard with paper foil. Those material details can help you set expectations for handling and installation, but they do not establish a particular durability level or environmental performance.
Current prices, stock and delivery were not established for a specific studio or region. Treat any price seen on a product page as time- and location-sensitive, and calculate the complete configuration rather than comparing frame-only prices. A realistic budget includes the frame, doors or the decision to remain open, hinges or sliding hardware where required, interior accessories, wall-fixing supplies if not included, delivery and possible assembly help.
Studio-fit checklist before ordering
- Wall width, lowest ceiling height and usable floor depth are measured in the actual installation area.
- Doorway, hallway, stair or lift access has been checked for the packages and assembly route.
- The chosen frame height, width and depth match the available envelope.
- The 1/2-inch upright-assembly allowance and the door-specific clearance have been included.
- Hinged, sliding or open access works with the bed, desk, kitchen area and walking path.
- Every planned organizer is compatible with the selected frame and identified as included or separate.
- Two adults are available for assembly, or professional assistance is arranged.
- The wall material and suitable screws and plugs are known.
- The frame can be mounted flush and securely anchored as IKEA instructs.
- The complete configuration, delivery and any installation cost fit the budget at the time of purchase.

Choose an IKEA PAX for your studio only after a measurement-led layout confirms the frame, assembly clearance, door operation and wall anchoring. The best configuration is the one that fits your room and your real inventory—not simply the largest frame or the shallowest option.
