No permanent “Hollywood sign” has been approved for the South Perth foreshore. In 2024, a councillor asked the City to consider ways to attract visitors, including a permanent selfie artwork, a temporary art event or a Swan River light and water show. Council requested a report; it did not vote to build the sign. In December 2024, it instead approved extra funding for seasonal or temporary public art and pop-up cultural activity.
What was the South Perth “Hollywood sign” proposal?
The idea was raised in July 2024 by Councillor Nic Coveney as part of a motion asking the City of South Perth to consider ways to draw more visitors to the foreshore. The options included a permanent selfie-style artwork, a temporary art event, and a light or water show on the Swan River. PerthNow reported that Council voted 7–2 to request a report on the possibilities. That vote was a request for information, not approval for construction. PerthNow’s 1 August 2024 report quoted Coveney arguing that the foreshore has strong views of the Perth CBD skyline but is not among the city’s top attractions. That was his case for considering the idea, not an independently verified tourism ranking.

What did Council approve?
At its December 2024 meeting, Council noted plans for seasonal or temporary public art and pop-up cultural activation, then approved an additional AUD 15,000 in the 2024/25 budget for those activities. Examples recorded in the minutes included giant photo frames, hammocks, swings, deck chairs, artistic chairs and pods. The minutes do not record approval of a permanent Hollywood-style sign. The City’s December 2024 minutes also record Arts Advisory Group advice that a foreshore artwork should be developed with an artist, be specific to the place and begin as art rather than signage made for branding or commercial purposes.

The City report also said an “Instagrammable” installation would not qualify for public-art funding if its brief prescribed the outcome; the brief would need to allow a practising artist to design a bespoke work. The City’s Public Art Masterplan and Policies page describes objectives for acquiring and managing public art and says projects should align with precinct curatorial objectives. It also describes Policy P101 as supporting a 1% contribution from qualifying City projects with construction values above $2 million. Because that page may change, readers should check the City’s current policy wording before relying on it as a live funding rule.

Why the tourism case is still uncertain
The council report included visitor and tourism figures used to argue for a landmark, including claims about Hollywood, Chicago’s Cloud Gate and Table Mountain. The document does not establish the original publishers for those figures, so they should be understood as figures cited in a proponent’s council submission, not as verified evidence of the likely effect in South Perth. No independent study quantifying the expected tourism or economic impact of a foreshore installation was identified in the available reporting.
Cr Mary Choy argued that the proposal was not a community priority and could draw resources away from facilities and asset renewal. That was her stated view in PerthNow, rather than a verified assessment of the City’s finances. The practical questions for any future proposal include how it would be funded and maintained, whether it suits the foreshore and its views, and how ferry operations and other stakeholders would be accommodated.

What happened with the later public-art commission?
A 2025 procurement listing shows that the City sought expressions of interest from artists and artist teams for a major foreshore public-art commission. The listing reports an award date of 16 December 2025, but does not name the recipient or disclose the selected artwork. It does not confirm that the original sign proposal was chosen, funded or installed. The available status is therefore a later procurement development, not proof of a completed project. The Australian Tenders listing for the foreshore commission is the public record of that tender information.
