Wizards of the Coast first said a promotional image for Magic: The Gathering was not created using AI, then corrected that statement on January 7, 2024. The company said a human had done the overall work, but AI-generated components from tools such as Photoshop had entered the creative. The image promoted Ravnica Remastered; Wizards said the art came from a vendor and that it remained responsible for meeting its standards.
What happened with the Magic: The Gathering image?
The disputed image was marketing for Ravnica Remastered, not a card illustration in the finished set. After viewers questioned the image, Wizards initially denied that it had been made using AI. On January 7, 2024, the Magic account reversed course. In a statement reproduced by GameSpot, Wizards said: “We made a mistake earlier when we said that a marketing image we posted was not created using AI.”

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWizards explained that components available in tools such as Photoshop had “crept into” the creative, while saying a human had created the overall image. The company also said the art came from a vendor. It did not identify the specific tool, describe exactly how it was used, or say that the vendor knowingly broke a rule. Reported visual inconsistencies in the background prompted scrutiny, but those observations are not independent proof of how the image was made, as Wargamer reported.

What did Wizards take responsibility for?
Wizards distinguished between the vendor’s contribution and its own oversight. In the same follow-up statement, reproduced by GameSpot, it said: “While the art came from a vendor, it’s on us to make sure that we are living up to our promise to support the amazing human ingenuity that makes Magic great.” The company said it would update how it worked with vendors on creative outside game products, including social-media marketing images.
That was a stated commitment. The available accounts do not establish which later vendor-process changes were implemented, so the announcement should not be read as proof of a specific new review system.

How does the incident relate to Wizards’ current AI-art policy?
Wizards’ Generative AI art FAQ, updated June 18, 2025, says artists, writers, and creatives contributing to Magic trading-card products and Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing products must not use generative AI tools to create final products. That policy statement concerns finished game products; the 2024 controversy involved a marketing image. The company’s reported plan to revisit vendor work on marketing creative addressed that separate context.
The FAQ describes Wizards’ approach to allegations: gather reports, review the art, rerun tools, and contact the artist. Wizards says detection is difficult, and that privacy, inconclusive investigations, or internal actions can mean it does not publicly respond to every concern. It also says it was investing in a pilot with Voight.ai, described as a customized detection-tool project, and emphasizes keeping a human involved. These are Wizards’ descriptions of its process, not independent evidence of a detector’s accuracy.
