With just 24 hours before a Halloween costume party, Maïlys Lecaillier, 31, of Pas-de-Calais, France, made an ostrich costume from garbage bags and toilet paper. Her TikTok video shows her cutting, taping and shaping the materials into a bird with flapping wings and a bobbing neck—and then bringing it to life with a comic performance. PEOPLE reported the story on October 27, 2025.
How the last-minute ostrich costume came together
Lecaillier shared the making process on TikTok through @lesmondesdemae. The documented materials were garbage bags and toilet paper. In the video, she cuts, tapes and shapes them into the costume’s body, wings and neck. The finished wings flap, while the neck bobs as she moves.
She captioned the project: “Garbage bags, toilet paper, and hours of work for a ME-MO-RABLE result,” according to PEOPLE. Though the costume was made on a tight deadline, Lecaillier said the idea was not hers: “The idea isn’t mine,” she replied later, adding, “but I admit I’m delighted with the result!!”

The performance made it a funny Halloween costume idea
The video is more than a reveal of a homemade outfit. Lecaillier runs around her home in character and pops a balloon as if laying an egg. That playful performance gives the homemade ostrich a comic payoff. PEOPLE reproduced viewer reactions including “Absolutely the best costume I’ve ever seen” and “10/10 for imagination, 10/10 for the interpretation, 10/10 for the funniness/humor.”

This is an inventive example of a DIY costume from garbage bags, but the report is not a step-by-step pattern. It does not state how many bags or toilet-paper rolls Lecaillier used, provide measurements, give a cost, or explain how the costume was secured or tested for safety. Anyone recreating the look will need to work out fit and construction for their own materials and wearer rather than follow a verified tutorial.
